Political Conservatism, Racial Identity And Interracial Dating

African Americans are the most judged group of individuals in the U.S. and around the world. Many American and non-American citizens see African American males as threating and thugs, while others view African American females as angry and ghetto. These stereotypes have led to Blacks being least likely to date outside of their race compared to other races. In this study we will discussing the reasons why White Americans would either object or not object to a member of their family bringing home an African American for dinner, we will also look at how education, gender, and region affect these decisions. In this study we will go into detail about why these attributes can cause different responses with White American. This research is important because there has been little to no research done on how whites really feel about family members dating outside their race and to test why White Americans would either except or object this notion. While White and Black Americans have come a long way in our hatred for each other we still have so far to go. Americans (White, Black, Hispanic, and other) are all entitled to our own opinions but these opinions should not be based off of racism.

One’s colour, religion and families origin should not interfere with the happiness between the couple. A publication by the University of Toronto Scarborough furthers this notion of love and relationships; yet explains there are many barriers and challenges which many interracial couples strive to overcome.

Love has a lot to do with race it has a way of bringing out both good and bad in some people and unfortunately in some cases the issues of love and race are taken too far. In today’s society it is not as much of an issue to see interracial couples together as it used to be in the past, but that does not mean that it is not still an issue for some people. Throughout the semester we have studied different ways that not only in the cases of love but also family, friendship, and community are affected by racial issues both past and present, which only goes to show that racism still exists in our world today despite all of the progressions that we have made towards fixing the issue.

Interracial relationships are seen everywhere in America today. Even though they are common, the viewpoints in them are not. According to Social Psychology Quarterly, “perceived discrimination is often a defining feature of the interracial relationship among members of racial minority group, while perceived discrimination is less likely to be considered relevant among members of racial majority group” (Tropp). This states that the minority tends to see more discrimination toward them, thus this is going to be a major factor that will determine if they are in an interracial relationship. Therefore, the interracial relationships today are decided by both people in the relationship, and there are no punishments for being in one of these relationships. Society nowadays is accepting of interracial relationships. According to the book Elizabeth and Hazel Two Women of Little Rock, “By the spring of 1998 the sight of a white woman and a black woman together wasn’t all that odd” (Margolick 208). Neomoto argues that although America is seeing more interracial marriage, we haven’t reached a post-racism era because there are only certain types of interracial couples who are embraced by society. To demonstrate this point, he discusses the gendered ideas surrounding interracial marriages of whites and Asians or Asian Americans. Neomoto points out how marriages between white men and Asian women are far more common and accepted than between white women and Asian men. This is because Asian women, along with being eroticized by their petite frames and dark hair, are often stereotyped with traditional gendered qualities like being submissive and good caretakers (Neomoto, pg. 223). The purpose of this study was to investigate college students’ perceptions o couples engaged in interracial romantic relationship compared to college students’ perceptions of couples engaged in romantic relationships with individuals of the same race/ethnicity. Also, adult college students drawn from the graduate population of a publicly supported, historically Black university and one private, Baptist University will serve as subjects as well. The researcher of this study predicted there will be a substantial difference in the perceptions of couples engaged in interracial relationships as oppose to same race relationships amongst these college students. Also stated that these differences might be affected by age, gender and education level of these participants.

According to the U. S. Census Reports, interracial marriages have more than tripled between 1980 and today. There are currently 1.6 million interracial marriages in the United States, and that figure is continuing to grow (Duru, 2012). Statistics show that over 70% of American society has no problem with mixed race relationships, and 40% of Americans have already dated someone of another ethnicity. For the most part relationships between people of different races are no different from the interactions between people of the same race (Duru, 2012).

In Today’s society Interracial relationships is still looked down upon. Eau claire states “Before 1967 interracial relationships was illegal, In fact mixed race marriages were illegal in 16 states in 1961”. As advanced as we Americans have come with technology and equality still many people have an opinion on couples who are of the opposite race. In my experiment me and an African American friend of mine went to local restaurants in various locations and noted down the service we experienced from These different restaurants and venues. We expected to get mixed reactions from the two different locations.Some positive along with negative reactions, After all we are testing this theory in a small southern town.

People who date and socialize with people of different racial groups frequently experience negative reactions. Many of the disapproving messages come from people of their own racial group. Previous studies had explored the effects which interracial relationships have on prejudice, racial attitude, and cultural awareness but there hadn’t yet been any research done which looked that what factors increase or decrease the chances of such relationships forming. By looking at different situational factors, and outcomes one can assume that there are some factors that may cause interracial relationships to become more common. The fact that interracial friendships have been shown to foster a more positive attitudes as well as a higher level of cultural awareness, can help us understand the importance of finding more successful ways to encourage interracial mixing. By looking at how threat cues impact the implications and outcomes of already present safety cues, one can see how the first part of this study, referred to as study 1, can create environments where people, specifically the minority, feel safe and encouraged to form interracial relationships.

Within this group they were interested in determining what factors influence young people’s attitudes towards interracial relationships. When choosing dating or sexual partners, we automatically have a certain “type” to which we prefer. Our type is made up of specific attributes to which we presume to be attractive, some of us exclude certain races within our dating radar. Throughout this paper I will examine how gay and straight communities use race to exclude potential dating or sexual partners, find a common theme to which groups are excluded and desired, what I think makes certain races more sought after and if having a racial preference is racist.

Interracial couples as well as same sex couples face many of the same controversial problems and dilemmas, however, not many differences could be seen between the values of these couples regardless of their generations. The two different groups of individuals being interviewed were a selected group of interracial couples of an older age group ranging from 60 – 33, and a group of same sex couples the ages of 25 – 19. This literature examines human communication with theory addressing differences between interracial couples among young adolescent’s interpersonal styles. To address these differences, the authors introduce four stages of relationship that explores various stages of a couple’s life together through the communication requirements ranging from developments of coping, maintenance, racial awareness, and identity emergence. These findings attempts to explore how intimate communication across interracial couple can and does work effectively through different measures of interpersonal style. To identify the communication stages, researchers held interviews among interracial couples and individual partners by examining their voices by applying interpersonal styles. It is found that interracial couples are challenged to communicate creatively and thus prompts the couple to not only assist them but others to others reconstitute the images of interracial couples and images of race and in the current social construction when they begin to develop their own perspective and vocabulary.

“...concerns that children and grandchildren will suffer society’s lingering prejudice” (Root, 2006, para.5). Mixing race can cause bullying or one to be judged because it is not accepted. Although people are still against interracial couples, there are many who support it. Interracial relationships are becoming more common in the world today. Mixing races used to be uncommon because it was never accepted. Now that it is becoming more accepted the numbers have been rising and are expected to keep rising throughout the years. “The percentage was 14.6% in 2008, up from 6.7% in 1980…” (Jayson, 2011, para.6). With numbers continually increasing, it means that many people are becoming more tolerant with the fact that interracial couples are now accepted and can legally be joined as one. When the anti-miscegenation law was passed in 1967, interracial couples began to slowly appear. Once numbers started to grow, it was an influence on many people because it was now portrayed as “ok”. This gave a sense of hope to many and showed that everyone now had equality to be with whoever they chose. Moreover, interracial relationships bring acceptance in society because kids now see mixed raced forms in the media. “Younger Americans have grown up in an environment where they have been immersed with multi-cultural images from sports, to television, to music, to gender to literature” (Watson, 2014, para.6). As one sees biracial or multiracial people around them or in the media , it makes the individual more comfortable with the subject of mixing races. Growing up in an environment with multiracial people can help bring acceptance and a welcomed feeling to all
