Poverty during 2000’s: The official poverty rate is 12.7%, based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2016 estimates. That year an estimated 43.1 million Americans were living in poverty.

More than 800 million people in the world are malnourished, 777 million of them are from the developing world (Raphel, S., 2014). Poverty is an issue that must be addressed to the population loud and clear or everyone will end up suffering. There are many families trying to survive and live from paycheck to paycheck. Unfortunately, there are some families that are unable to support himself or herself or any family member. One important key issue of poverty in the United States is inequality. Many Americans blame the poor people for their own fate but you should never judge a book by its cover. There can be many reasons why an individual or families end up in poverty. For example, low wage jobs, discrimination and social inequality, vulnerability to natural disasters, war and political instability. Another big issue we face today is child poverty. This is a very critical issue because these young children are our future. If we let these children live in poverty, there is a higher chance they will drop out of school, look for work in order to support their family, or give up in life.

Poverty is a major global issue in today’s society. It also has a broad definition as it is very complex and cannot be specifically defined. Poverty is circumstance-dependent. According to Sharif Mohammed, author of Poverty Reduction - An Effective Means of Population Control, “Poverty is a multidimensional condition of human survival, not just a measure of deficiency in income. It is generally defined in relation to a minimum standard of decent living. The levels of living below this are referred to as survival standards. In an article written by Angus Deaton, he discusses the issues behind poverty and why it is persistent in the United States. In the beginning of his article, he presents data from the World Bank which states that 3.2 million out of 769 million of the world's poorest people are living in the United States and are living off of less than $1.90 a day as of 2013 (Deaton). Some of the arguments he mentions that may contribute to the United States high poverty rate include where our poverty line is set, the quality of our necessities, and our government aid.

There are many myths behind the word and status called “Poverty”, this is a highly controversial issue that has affected millions of people worldwide. In society, there is a hierarchy in society and people’s perception of poverty ranges in thought processes such as in our social imagination. There are numerous reasons that contribute to the overwhelming poverty rates in America, some of which cause sever hunger and death. Today, too many people of all ages are living in poverty and many others are only one paycheck away from being there. More than one in eight Americans are considered poor. Poverty has had a huge effect on the outcome of the loss of homes and the lack of resources needed to be able to survive in today’s society. Many people who are in poverty are not able to make enough to support their families.

When you think about those numbers, that is a very positive improvement for only one year. Nearly 1.1 billion people have moved out of extreme poverty since 1990. The U.S. Census Bureau (2004), found that the official poverty rate in 2005 was 12.6%. According to the report the poverty rate for African Americans was 24.9% while the poverty rate was 21.8% for Hispanics.

Poverty is a major issue in the United States society today. Cultural, economical, political, and social factors all contribute to poverty. Economic and education development are two major issues that will help prevent poverty. The United States Census Bureau defines poverty as an “economic condition in which people lack sufficient income to obtain basic needs for food, housing, clothing, health services, and education. (U.S Census Bureau)” In other words, poverty is powerlessness, lack of representation and freedom.
