Pro Euthanasia

Furthermore, euthanasia is a disgrace to humanity. An individual person or group shouldn’t decide how, when, and if another person should die. The act of ending someone’s life just because another decided that the individual’s life gives no worth to the person or to society is unjust. That is simply the person’s opinion, and their opinion shouldn’t end a precious human life. Usually, people with disabilities who request euthanasia, do so because of how others treat them, not because of their actual disability. If we were to respect those with disabilities, that would remove hardships, not death. Another reason why euthanasia is wrong is that a person who can’t think straight or is a human vegetable, a person who does not have mental or physical abilities (O’Steen). She/he can be killed by a guardian’s request according to law, even if the patient never showed a desire to die. The Declaration of Independence states our rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” and euthanasia goes against that. If the right to live is reduced, all over rights are worthless (“Euthanasia Statement”).

It has been argued that for people on life support systems and people with long standing diseases causing much pain and distress, euthanasia is a better choice. It helps in relieving them from pain and misery. In cases like terminal cancers when the patient is in much pain and when people associated with them also are put through a lot of pain and misery, it is much more practical and humane to grant the person his/her wish to end his/her own life in a relatively painless and merciful way.

Another argument for euthanasia is justice. Justice says that we must respect one's decisions and rights. Not letting someone who is terminally ill and suffering is not doing them justice. If there were someone I knew who was terminally ill, I would not want to see them suffer. Supporting their decision of dying with dignity would be my duty. My father would not allow me to visit my ill grandfather in the hospital. He wanted me to remember him how he was, not the sick man in the bed. We have a duty to do them justice in what they want.

It is inhuman to continually allow a person to suffer when there is no chance of them improving. Even animals are put out of their misery when injured or sick beyond repair as to not prolong the suffering, humans should be allowed that same option. Long term pain can severely affect a person, sometimes causing the patient to be mad and hateful without meaning to . Giving a person a choice to end their life while they still hold on to the personality they have always had is not for the government but for the patient. A dying person should not be tortured in the process unless they choose to be. Terminating one's life to escape from excruciating pain is an excellent reason to legalize Euthanasia.

Laws against euthanasia and assisted suicide are in place to prevent abuse and to protect people from unscrupulous doctors and others. They are not, and never have been, intended to make anyone suffer. Activists often claim that laws against euthanasia and assisted suicide are government mandated suffering. This claim would be similar to saying that laws against selling contaminated food are government mandated starvation. In a society as obsessed with the costs of health care and the principle of utility, the dangers of the slippery slope are far from fantasy.

If someone has a life threating disease and wishes death, it should be granted to them. The prolonging of the suffering of dying patients is an unethical practice that should be stopped. Euthanasia as of today in the majority of states is illegal. My opinion on Euthanasia is that it should be legalized because the patients get to die with dignity, on their own terms

Why should anyone be forced to suffer in pain daily while they are just waiting to die? People must look past this issue as if it is something that doesn’t affect them and think about how they would feel if they or someone they loved was in this position. It is better to let people decide to end their life by this painless method of taking a doctor prescribed drug, rather than being desperate enough to end their life in some drastic way. “It is often said that a society is defined by how it treats its weakest citizens. It would be wise, then, for those of us who are currently stronger to pay careful attention to what is being said about, and done to, human beings who can no longer defend themselves” (Denhollander, 2013). The humane choice is to let the terminally ill die with dignity which is something all people should accept.

These aspects can be used as a pro, but as a con also. Overall, euthanasia should be legal and ultimately be the decision of the patient whether to consent to this action because it is the right of every human to decide for themself whether to die peacefully or live potentially suffering.
