Employee motivation is, or at least must be, one of the key issues for directors, managers and personnel managers. The leader must be able to find the sensitive strings of his subordinates, which can be motivated by influencing them to achieve high performance. The correct use of motivation encourages staff to make more efficient use of their knowledge, skills, and talents. In today's turbulent, often chaotic environment, commercial success depends on the employee's talent and effort. Despite the many existing theories and practices, some of the motivation of leaders today remains a mystical term. This is partly due to the fact that people are motivated by different things and techniques.

There are two types of people in this world: those that lead, and those that follow. A leader should be someone that people are willing to stand behind; a leader should be strong and know their impact on the world. As Queen Elizabeth II said herself, “I know of no single formula for success. But over the years I have observed that some attributes of leadership are universal and are often about finding ways of encouraging people to combine their efforts, their talents, their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration to work together (BrainyQuote)”. A leader should be able to stand as his or her own unique person; she should, however, always be responsible, involved with her peers, reliable, and be able to handle

(2016). p.33). There are many traits that a leader must have to be able to be successful. Three that come to mind are trustworthy or honest, motivated, and knowledgeable. Ever leader needs to be honest and have the trust of those who are following them. This is essential for any plan or idea to be carried out steadily. Also, open communication cannot happen if one does not trust their leader. Next, a leader must be motivated and have energy. If a leader is not motivated, those who are following them are also not going to be motivated either. Someone has to be able to push others to keep up the hard work to get to where they need to be. Lastly, a leader needs to be knowledgeable. At work, often when faced with something that I do not know the answer to, I go to my charge nurse who is very knowledgeable on almost all situations that may arise. If lacking any vital knowledge, staff under that leader will not have anyone to go to in times of need. This leads to the follower being lost and not knowing what the next step is in their situation. All of these traits are what I like to see in a leader in my work

A leader must have a high commitment level to the organization, the ability to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the personnel they work with to develop effective teams, and the ability to communicate effectively to avoid misconceptions. A leader must care about and support their members in ways that help both the member and the organization as a whole. As Lt. Col. Matt Joganichs’ uncle stated to him prior to administering the commissioned officer’s oath, “make sure you take care of your people. If you do that, they’ll take care of you.”1 To me, taking care of and supporting your member’s means to ensure people have a positive work environment, they have access to the training the need to perform their jobs, are able to provide input to policies that effect the organization, and that there are procedures in-place to ensure people are being treated fairly. My leadership philosophy was developed to encompass these leadership traits to provide a solid foundation for the organization to succeed. Whenever a leadership philosophy is developed it is always good to perform continual analysis of it for improvements. A leader must be able to move quickly from one agenda to another. A leader must be able to inspire a person or a group of people to want to do their best. A definition of leadership can be, “A relationship through which one person influences the behavior of other people” ( Mullins, p. 904 ). One of the biggest problems that a leader in any organization has to deal with is change. Leaders have to be versatile and willing to make tough decisions in today’s economic climate. When I think about leadership this quote impacts my life the most. Leaders develop, cultivate, and invigorate their people. Investing in people is the wisest action a leader can take. That investment requires a leader to operate as a diversified portfolio, adjusting leadership style to fit the people working with them. People can tell if a leader is passionate about what they do. “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.” Simon Sinek

John Quincy Adams once said “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” There are many qualities that a person must have in order to be a great leader, if all he/she care about is power and control than they are not a great leader. A great leader is someone who is always looking towards the future. He/she has a plan and even when that plan may not be the most popular thing they stick with it and carry it out. A great leader is also always looking to better the society or the group he/she is in, he/she never gives up on making the world a better place and aren’t afraid to stick up for what he/she believes in. Another quality a great leader must have is being patient with his/her peers and always treating them with respect, he/she have to demonstrate a clear understanding of people and be able to understand and accommodate to a person’s needs. A great leader is always willing to put the needs of the group in front of his/her own and is willing to make sacrifices in order to better the society.

“No man will make a great leader who wants to do it all for himself or get all the credit for doing it.” - Andrew Carnegie. This particular quote is very meaningful to this topic because it explains that a leader should be selfless and think about the people he is representing. In this quote it shows that a leader that maintains a positive outlook and stays motivated will be successful. A leader should display confidence over his/her peers, should have the people’s benefits be first on his/her priorities, and also be determined to overcome every challenge that comes his/her way. There are many qualities that a person should have in order to be named a “good leader” and/or example for others.

It is imperative to note that no two people share the exact same values no matter how noble they may appear. Therefore, successful leaders remain humble and refrain from making assumptions or value judgements against others. It is essential for current, effective leaders to stay in touch with their staff members and other stakeholders. Respected leaders live in the now and do not rely on their past successes to carry them through. A strong leader does what they say they are going to do and openly owns it when they fail. Additionally, conscientious leaders are not abusive towards others, get on the balcony in order to see the big picture, and do not fight on too many fronts. Lastly, effective leadership requires some flexibility and open-mindedness. Do not lock on to personal or professional core values, otherwise stakeholders become alienated and the focus becomes too narrow and personal which will isolate potential team members and potential

Douglas MacArthur once said, a true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent. My Vice President (VP) Ed Odum at Bank of America comes to mind regarding Bank of America’s great leaders for the bank. Some people are born great leaders in conjunction with not needing a degree under their belt, but will receive a degree knowing the requirements to move up in the glass ceiling in business.

And what's even more important is that once we understand what motivates us, we begin to get a better understanding about what motivates others. Motivating others is how you really get things done. That's how leaders are born.

I plan to make use of my leadership style as both a student and alumnus of Goizueta Business School in a way that will impact positively on the institution. As a student, I will utilize my leadership style as a problem solving tool in group settings. This I could do by supporting the agenda of teams, in which I happen to be a member, through encouraging collaboration. If elected to any position of leadership, I will ensure that I create a cooperative work

For decade’s individuals, companies, and organizations have spent an unprecedented amount of money on researching, molding, modeling and working to define what a leader is and what characteristics make successful leaders. Despite all the research, there is not a quick answer or even full agreement as to what makes an individual an effective leader. The definition of a leader is “someone who can influence others and who has managerial authority.” (Robbins, Decenzo, Coulter, 2015. P.370)
