Prominent Architecture of Melbourne's Federation Square

Habitat ’67, designed as a major theme exhibition of the 1967 Montreal World Exposition, was originally intended as an experiential project for a new housing typology that could incorporate the qualities of a “suburban” home into an “urban” high-rise. Located on Mackay Pier in the St. Lawrence River, overlooking the city of Montreal on one end and IIe St. Helene on the other, the building sits on a narrow strip of land. Habitat ‘67 deals with its site condition in an intriguing way by fragmenting the architecture with rectangular boxes. The project builds a system of repetitive three-dimensional modules which are composed of boxes, a system that can be adopted to a wide range of site conditions. The modular is made of stacked rectangular boxes in varied geometrical configurations which gives the building the opportunity to break the traditional form of orthogonal high rises.

A very important reason why Australia decided to become a nation (having a federal government) was because of an inadequate defence force. Each of the six colonies in Australia had their own military force. But when it came to patrolling the extensive Australian coastline, they had to rely on the British navy to fulfil that task. Due to there being a number of countries such as Germany, France, and Russia who had colonised parts of the Pacific, there was a growing fear that one of them could have attacked Australia. There was a report released by British Major - General Sir J Bevan Edwards in 1889, states the individual colonies of Australia did not have enough soldiers,

The movement from a British colony to the independent and proud nation of Australia took place at the turn of the 20th century. This was not a quick change and it was not a result of one singular factor or event. Many factors and events contributed to the Federation of Australia in 1901. Federation was influenced by the people of the nation, and their decision and thoughts on uniting of the colonies. Before Federation, the colonies of Australia were not one country. They had different railways, different defence forces and even identities. Federation meant that the colonies of Australia – Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia – would unite into one country. To start off I am somewhat confused on exactly what we are trying to accomplish, although I understand the basics in what we are doing in this paper. I would like to talk about and look up information on building large structures such as skyscrapers as well as complex buildings like the Darla Moore School of Business. How I plan to go about doing this is by showing you first what I already know about building structures that I have learned in previous building construction classes. I then plan on finding more information inside of The Carolina Rhetoric in order to better understand how you can come about constructing such a complex structure. Stability and balance is also achieved through the incorporation of the vertical and horizontal planes. In the southwest facade of the building the vertical slits are balanced with the horizontal planes created by the cubes, cornice and the ornamental horizontal band that runs halfway through the walls. These vertical and horizontal planes further dictate a rhythmic continuity throughout the building. Building's scale is rather modest in comparison to its site and the surrounding landscape and the smooth texture of the facade helps its integration to the environment. (Figure 4)

In the book The Devil in The White City by Erik Larson, the city of Chicago is used to show the great failures and successes of the United States. The story takes place a few years before and during the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition (World’s Fair) in Chicago. Larson focuses on the stories of Daniel Burnham, the director at the exposition, and Dr. H.H. Holmes, a serial killer. Daniel Burnham shows how America is a land of opportunity, and even in the face of many hardships succeeds in his goal of having a successful exposition. The Devil in The White City reflects the extremes of character in America because it shows American ingenuity, optimistic naivete, and the complete loss of morality.

Sydney Hyde Park Barracks Museum (see figure 23) was chosen because of its contribution to Australia’s history. The Museum has witnessed many changes throughout its history, from 1819 when it was completed to 1979. From its humble beginning as a convict male dormitory to a women’s immigrant half way house, mostly for Irish orphans shelters who immigrated to Australia after the Irish famine while awaiting employment, hence the monument An Gorta Mor (see figure 24) erected in 1999 by governor General of Australia Sir William Dean to commemorate the young Irish women who left their motherland because of the infamous famine in Ireland (Sydney living Museum, 2014). The history behind the monument may connect with some children whose heritage originated from the Irish community from the Sydney Hyde Park Barracks and those children with no Irish descent will appreciate and develop

Melbourne’s Federation Square was a Victorian Government initiative that was announced in 1996, with support from Melbourne City Council and the Commonwealth Government. The initial projected cost of the structure was estimated at $110 million, with a completion date of December 2000 (Matters of Public Interest 2003). The final estimated cost was over $470 million, with the official opening occurring in October 2002, even though the construction was not complete (Misiak 2003) (ABC 2003). Being such a high profile, exposed, arduous project, there were many factors that contributed to the various shortfalls over the 6-year timeframe. This report aims to identify key knowledge areas within project management and discuss improvements that could have been made to streamline the task and improve overall continuity.

Multiplex argued that Mott MacDonald’s design for the Wembley steel work was not fit for purpose and that the initial designs were not correct, constructible, coordinated and consistent. In other words, although the design looked good, it was very challenging and maybe impossible to replicate to scale.

Some of the important clients that participated in the Preparation and construction of the “Freedom Tower” include multiple Engineering firms, architects, construction mangers, and numerous Cad Technicians for modeling. All major clients are portrayed in Figure 2- Table of Major Clients.

The article claims that many valuable sites were lost due to constructing buildings in the cities. However, the professor says that construction sites are examined according to the archeological interests and values. According to the professor, if buildings are going to build, the archeologists and local government make a plan to preserve an artifacts from previous building sites to protect artifacts before constructing the building.

The incredible work of these Modernist architects had a strong and distinct influence on up and coming young Australian Architects during the 1950’s – 1970’s.

Since the early stages, the project was inundated with concerns and issues with the project scope. From the perspective of project management, the initial scope was not defined well enough. Details of the design were over looked and aspects such as the details of the air conditioning ended up increasing the original scope by $200 million. This supposedly led a prosperous project to an uncertain economic ordeal. Initial estimates of the project had been $5.5 billion and by the time of its actual completion it been delayed by a year and increased to $15
