Appropriate road safety policy is one of the essential elements of a well-balanced overall transport and public health policy.
-Michael Ray, 1995.
Traffic congestion is one of the common problems faced by nearly all the people in India. The basic reason behind this is that the existing roadways are not capable of handling the increasing number of motor vehicles on roads.
Cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Patna, Lucknow etc, they all have to deal with this common problem of traffic. They have to deal with thousands of cars running through the streets each day. They share same problem of traffic and the reason behind the problem is also same; increasing number of cars on streets, poor road management, poor practices on behalf of employers etc.
The number of population is increasing and therefore more people are adding into the city’s population day by day. Cities have limited capacity but over-crowding leads to chaos. A city has a limited capacity to expand due to lack proper planning and infrastructure. A Street in a city with a lane on each side before might not suffice after few years when the population has increased.
Limited space and lack of proper infrastructure adds to the problem. Planning plays an important role in building any infrastructure. Government fails to see the future and act on it. Hence cities are forced to work with the routes they already have. This is the major reason for traffic congestion.
India has the second largest road networks in the
The town of Halton Hill’s population includes the areas of Georgetown and Acton and other communities such as Erin, Oakville, Burlington and Milton regions. This is what is considered to be my community because these are the many places that I am visiting most often and they are always referred to together as “Halton Hills Region” (p.5, 2011). With the substantial increase in population in the Halton Hills region, more specifically Georgetown, there should be a strong demand for a public transit system to counteract all of the environmental disturbances that are being caused due to this increase. One of the things that is happening is that there are so many trees they are cutting down in order to expand and grow the population with houses being built. Statistics are showing that the population of Halton Hill’s region will expand by 54% over the next 20 years (p.5, 2011). By the year 2031, employment rates will increase by 75%, leaving Halton with 42,100 jobs being offered (p.5, 2011). With this rapid influx of citizens, this will only increase the demands of travel to get to these work places as well as other destinations (p.5, 2011). Over the past couple of year’s the traffic congestion on the major roads in Halton Hills such as Trafalgar Road and Regional Road 25 with individuals trying to get to and from work. There used to be very little traffic in these areas, however since Halton Hill’s has continued to expand, the utilization of automobiles has significantly increased due to the fact there is no public transit system. The Transportation Demand Management in Halton Hill’s is noticing the increase in automobiles stating that there needs to be a major shift in more efficient ways of transportation, yet there still has been nothing improvised (p.7, 2011). The Transportation Demand
As a result of an increased population inhabiting one area, traffic congestion is often a major issue resulting from urbanisation. In London, traffic is evidently a problem. As it would be expected from a capital city home to more
Austin, Texas has a problem with traffic congestion. The solutions is Mike Heiligenstein and the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority. The popular city in Texas is constantly growing; consequently the traffic problems are a significant issue. The traffic problems in Texas can be managed, but not eliminated. According to the Central Texas regional Mobility Authority,(CMRMA), a technical solution is the key to managing the difficult traffic congestion. Traffic solutions involve more than the creation of new roads and highways. Mobility Authority strives to create innovative solutions to manage traffic issues in Austin, Texas.
TRAFFIC CHARACTERISTICS: This section describes the traffic characteristics such as traffic volume and composition, Travel patterns and speed measurements on major roads in few case studies in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. Comparison is made as to how the traffic characteristics are changing over a period of time and the emerging issues are highlighted
Downtown Toronto is an urban area that has many transportation problems that revolves around congestion. Congestion occurs when the demand to travel to a location is greater than supply to get to that location. For instance, some of these problems includes traffic congestion, public transit inadequacy, and difficulties for non-motorized methods of transportation, i.e. bikes. Traffic congestion occurs when there is a large quantity of vehicles using a small fixed amount of land, in addition to slower speed limits, stalling of vehicles and accidents on the road. As previously mentioned, the population in Toronto is continuously increasing, as well as the demand for transportation. Due to the demand of transportation methods exceeding the supply results in a rise in traffic on the roads, and therefore creating more congestion. (Farahani et al., 2013). What makes matters worse is that an increase in traffic, especially in urban areas will result in an increase in vehicle collisions. The outcome of these collisions creates more delays and therefore, more traffic. Secondly, a significant transportation problem in Toronto is the inadequacy of public transportation. The City of Toronto, is a location that has many
As Dallas Fort Worth grows, we see more issues associated with our urban area. One of the major issues we are dealing with is the traffic throughout the city. The cause of traffic could be poor road management, lack of proper public transportation, or weather issues. There are many problems associated with traffic such as pollution, and the risks of having accidents which is further followed by physical and behavioral issues. One possible solution to the traffic congestion could be a better public transportation, which could be achieved by imposing heavy taxes on solo car drivers.
The higher population of people in a big city, the harder it will be to escape heavy traffic.
John Tory, who is Toronto mayor, said that he will attach higher price to closing lanes (“Tory”, 2014). The constructions have to safe, but it should be change the way that closes lanes. On the other hand, the closed lanes should allow using at least in peak traffic congestion time. In addition, the rest of the construction work should be done as possible as fast and intensive by increasing the number of government workers. If these ways are in progress, traffic congestion will be get better, and construction developers do not have to worry about
Traffic can be bad, but so is every major city. What we have are some bad drivers. They aren't the worst, but they are poorly trained. The left lane is for passing and slower traffic must keep right, but you always get the bunghole who plants himself in the left lane at a certain speed and thinks he's going fast enough for
From the past 18th century to the present 21st century. The developments and improvisation in all primary and secondary sectors brought humans under one urban roof, where things are easy to access ranging from sanitation to electricity and internet. The world’s urban population has increased form 733 million in 1975 to 2,857 million in 2000 and is estimated to reach 4,945 million by 2030 (storage). This pattern over the past 50 years gives us an insight about the net gain in urban population. Urban dwellings has transformed current cities into mega cities with population emerging up to 10 million. This rapid urbanization growth brings us a question about transportation. According to the information provided by PRB the number of megacities increased from 4 in 1975 to 22 in 2015(PRB). This trend indicated that in future there will be more cities entering into megacity categories, where the need for development of public transport sectors. Every two people in United States now have a car. If this is going to continue there would be 5.3 billion cars on roads by
Violations in traffic laws are very common in a highly populated country like India. The conditions are even worse in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai Bangalore and Chennai. The accidents associated with these violations cause a huge loss to life and property.
This is the simplest form of traffic control. As the name indicates it require man power to control the traffic. Depending on the countries and states the traffic polices are allotted for a required area or city to control the traffic by analyzing the traffic conditions. A traffic police stands in the middle of road and monitors flow of traffic. The traffic polices will have things like sign board, sign light and whistle to control the traffic. In time of congestion he gives signals to the vehicle driver whether to drive or stop. He is also able to recognize emergency case, so he can choose which lane needs more priority than other.
Extensive assessment of each community's problems and needs is the first step towards improving road safety worldwide. Ogden (1996) points out that determining the solutions to road safety problems such as traffic fatalities requires first an assessment of the nature and dimensions of the road safety problem. Assessment begins first with an evaluation of the region's road conditions and the types of vehicles
Many parts of India still have terrible roads and traffic conditions. Only beginning recently were highways being built, and with most cars on the roads being slow moving vehicles that usually don’t go faster than 15-20 mph, it makes it difficult for employees to get to work on time. Paul Horowitz, a partner and outsourcing leader for PricewaterhouseCoopers says that it can sometimes take an hour to get from one point in Hyderabad to another point in Hyderabad with only a few miles between them. Some of the roads are getting better than they were 10 years ago, when there were no physical dividers or lanes, but they are still a mess.
With the increasing growth in population the other variables for living like food, shelter and demand for better roadways have increased in recent years. The main cause for traffic congestion is the mismanagement of the government to regulate a healthy traffic in the city, followed by the slow non-motorized moving vehicles like rickshaw, the building of multistoried buildings without adequate parking facilities. But presently caretaker government has put RAJUK (RAJUK is one of the lead "Construction Actor" in the development process of Dhaka. The main activities include construction of roads, box-culverts/culverts and bridges and also development, excavation and filling of land) in the move to actively handle and demolish the structures that were illegally occupied by people which were public owned property this demolishing act by RAJUK gave Dhaka more space for movement for people and construction of roads.
