Over the past couple of years, there has been an ongoing debate about whether students should wear uniforms. There are some people who believe that it does have an influence on students as far as improving grades or behavior. Opposing arguments say that students wearing uniforms restricts them from expressing their individuality. Wearing uniforms should be a requirement in public schools. The reason why students should have to wear uniforms is that it helps focus more on learning rather than clothing, uniform apparel can be less expensive than casual clothing, and it reduces violence in schools. School uniforms are specific types of clothing. It usually is a polo shirt and pants ranging from specific colors depending on which school a student attends. For girls, it could be a shirt and skirt, along with a blazer. For boys, it could be a shirt with pants with a suit jacket and a tie. Along with uniforms, there are certain dress codes that a student must follow. Dress codes are guidelines for a student’s clothing. For uniforms, it could range from wearing specific colors or having clothing that has the school’s logo on it. The colors may coordinate with the school’s colors. Also, the clothing may have to be a certain length and shirts may need to be tucked in. Students who are wearing uniforms helps focus more on learning and not what someone is wearing. The Ocala Star Banner is an online local newspaper in Florida that is run by GateHouse Media, LLC. Jamie N. Jones is a retired school teacher who lives in Florida. She has firsthand experience with children who had to wear uniforms during her time as a teacher. In an article for Ocala Star Banner, author Jamie N. Jones argues that “Uniforms would encourage “team spirit” and a common identity, and they would eliminate the distraction “statement” clothing encourages.” In other words, uniforms would not cause a scene during learning and it can also boost morality in schools. If a student is worrying more about what kind of clothes he or she needs to wear to stand out, it could cause him or her to not to do well in school. In an article called “Uniforms – Are They a Good Fit?”, Marsha Boutelle interviews Judy Hunt-Brown. Hunt-Brown is a principal at Maeola R.
The argument I am looking to convey to the audience is that requiring high school students to wear uniforms should be overturned allowing students to wear what they want. The reasoning behind this argument is lack of proof that it lessens the chances of getting bullied, strips young adolescents of their individuality, and creates a competitive market for parents to have to in essence spend more money than save. There was the desired goal of creating the school uniform policy to put an end to bullying. However, that vision has yet to come to fruition with the reality being the policy is adding more negatives than visible positives. These aspects highlight why grade schools K-12 should cease with the requirement for students to have to wear uniforms.

New Orleans has the highest amount of schools with a school uniform policy in the US. Some schools nowadays have their kids wear school uniforms, there are some positive to this. As most kids are bullied, having them in a uniform can help them not get bullied. Even though there can be positives, there are more negatives to having kids wear school uniforms. Schools shouldn’t require their students to wear a school uniform because kids have individual tastes and different body types, it takes away their freedom to express themselves, and uniforms can be costly.
School uniforms in public schools are becoming fairly popular across the nation. With consideration, schools can greatly benefit from school uniforms if schools pick up this policy. Actions against this policy will occur when changes are being made, but if we can learn to accept school uniforms, many benefits or positive effects will outweigh then negative effects. With much thought, I personally think schools should have school uniforms because there would be less bullying, students can focus on education, and students can also freely express themselves in numerous ways.

In 1994, the school district of Long Beach California was one of the first to enforce school uniforms in the grades Kindergarten through 8th, and crime rates in the district dropped 22% soon after. School attendance also improved after the uniforms were introduced. Although this one statistic shows there are positive outcomes from school uniforms, there is one question that remains: Do school uniforms help or harm the students and environment at school? The controversy among this topic is that some people believe that uniforms improve the way kids act in class, however, others believe that school uniforms make their behavior worse. Another thing that certain people don’t like about uniforms is that they are very costly. A woman in Indianapolis was interviewed and said that she has five kids that all need uniforms, and with all the costs combined she had to pay almost $700. She found it was an outrage because she has a son who was a senior at the time and she had to pay for his uniforms as well. Even though she believed that uniforms are not an advantage, other people have the belief that uniforms have a positive outcome. In fact, some people think that the students’ behavior becomes subsequently better in the classroom setting; this is proven in the Long Beach study. There is also proof that school uniforms save people lots of money. This is because parents in one

Lately, many high schools are considering a question that has been around for decades. Should uniforms be mandatory in high schools? With the rise in violence, negative behavior, and inequality of students, many education administrators wonder if there is a correlation with uniforms to theses negative issues. Seeing students wear uniforms in school may seem either too strict or too traditional, but when one figures out, and understand, the reason why for this formality, more will see the advantage of wearing school uniforms. Some may feel that uniforms should not be required in schools because they think it’s a waste of money, students don’t want to be told what to wear, or because they don’t want to look the same like everyone else at school. However, uniforms are much less expensive than the clothing brands that students wear, so parents are saving more money. Students also need to understand that they can’t always get what they want, they need to realize that not everything is going to be their way. Students don’t want to wear the same clothing like others because they want to stand out, but this can create conflict at school because the students will begin to judge each other by what they wear, and if everyone wears uniforms we would be avoiding these types of conflicts.
There is a long running debate about the if there should be uniforms in public schools. People have been questioning if public schools be subjected to wearing school uniforms? Most students attending school are not all about having to wear uniforms. Uniforms are everywhere such as the army, high school, and restaurants. Blocking the fun out of school by wearing whatever the students are wanting is not a good idea. Clothing is the best way for students to show and express themselves by what they wear. Wearing a specific type of clothing can really be a struggle for students who are starting to grow up and finding out what they are and their personality. It can be argued that uniforms downside in three major reasons such as the cost of uniforms, judgment, and school security.
Lastly, while many parents believe uniforms limit what the students must choose to wear to school every day, it does not take away anything from their learning time as that is the core reason of students being in school in the first place. Without the desire to show of what trendy clothing they have or how much money their clothes cost, eliminating the option of no uniform school puts students’ full attention on their classwork. Also, school uniforms still allow for student to have their own ways of self-expression. Students can still express their desired style of choice by the way her or she styles their hair, wear their accessories, and their specific shoe choice.
Should schools make students wear uniforms? In the state of California, schools are deciding whether or not wearing uniforms is the best thing for students. For the city of Adelanto, these could be reasons to consider starting wearing uniforms at the schools. Many students should consider the many pros and cons of wearing uniforms at their schools before forming an opinion on the uniforms.
First and foremost, school uniforms give a sense that everyone is equal. Keith Metcalfe, deputy headmaster of Harrow School, states, “Like so many things at Harrow, our uniform is a great leveller… Whatever they bring to the Hill, they all come together on equal footing, to be identified and judged by their character and contribution alone.” The point that Metcalfe is trying to make is that school uniforms give people a sense of equality. He also claims that students are/should be judged only by character and contribution. These two points are very important because it shows that students should not be judged by their physical appearance, but by who they are inside. This might lessen tension between students and stop physical violence. No man is greater than another- people have their own talents, and all people are equal. School uniforms stress that.
Imagine being able to wake up every morning, roll out of bed, put on the same thing you wore the day before, and head off to school. Not only would you be able to do such a thing, but all of your friends were doing it, too! Sound too good to be true? Well, it’s becoming more common in our society as school uniforms have gone beyond private schools to public schools. Uniforms have a positive effect on students’ self-esteem, attendance, discipline, and test scores. They have also been proven to decrease the rate of crime and violence in public schools.
