Psychologist Rough Draft Have you ever wondered why people do the things they do? Everyone behaves differently in their own little ways, but sometimes these things cannot be understood. Through psychology, people are able to interpret behavior and apply the data to diagnose mental illnesses. As Ronald Reagan once said, “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone”. The role of being a psychologist means helping others by studying behavioral, cognitive, and social processes. This information is interpreted and then used to benefit others emotionally and mentally, and allows people to better understand how the mind works. Becoming a psychologist is rewarding when you consider the responsibilities, salary, and requirements associated with the profession. Some roles those in the psychology field can do outside of their job requirements is to show awareness of many disorder such as anxiety and depression. Also, show awareness by letting the world know that those who suffer from a mental disorder and do not seek help can cause problems for the person and even thoughts of suicide. People in the psychology field can also campaign to show how important their position is, when it comes to helping people either overcome or cope with their disorder.
Psychology has been a part of my life indirectly for many years, from something as insignificant as people watching in a cafe to an impromptu counselling session for a friend with emotional trauma. I have had a real desire to work with people for a long time and have always been fascinated with human behaviour and understanding how the mind works, in order to empower individuals to lead better lives. It is this fascination that has makes psychology such a desirable subject for me.

Earning my bachelor’s degree means when I get to college I have to buckle down and study. I will have to earn 120 semester credits or about 40 college courses. During this time you would learn about the fundamentals of psychology. After that, you will need a master's degree which would be an additional two to three years. In this time, you would practice in the field as a case manager, employment specialist, or social worker. Then, most state licensing boards require a doctorate which would take around four to seven years after getting a master’s degree. The type of doctoral degree you choose would be either a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) or Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology (PhD) and that would all depend on your career goals. When i was younger i decided i wanted to be in counseling and help people. I began doing research and kind of taught myself. When seeking a career as a psychologist, a person should always look out aspects such as responsibilities, necessary skills, working skills, salary; and its prospects, but most importantly is to prepare oneself properly by attending in institution of higher learning that will offer the best training possible such as at Sam Houston State University. Some tasks and responsibilities in being a psychologist are being able to understand the human brain, memory, mental health, and much more.
There are many qualities required to pursue a career as a Psychologist, which I believe I will develop and progress throughout my time at university.
