After the Civil War took place in the South there was an immense attempt to rebuild it. People had a lot of questions regarding the newly freed slaves and what they were going to do and how they were going to fix the south from the destruction from the war. The north was putting their efforts into helping the slaves and make them equally accepted as whites, however, the South disagreed with what the North was doing and wanted to keep blacks as slaves. This argument went back and forth because no one knew who should pay to rebuild the south. Should it be the South because they started the war or should it be the North because they continued to fight back? The south killed the idea of reconstruction with their violence. The Southern states are responsible for killing reconstruction because they were too violent and had no efforts in helping newly freed slaves. “He was foully murdered by the Ku-Klux-Klan in the Grand Jury room of the Court-House on Saturday.. He was stabbed 5 or 6 times and then hanged on a hook in the Grand Jury room.” Document A. This proves just how violent the south had become toward to slaves. They were willing to kill any Republican who wanted equality for the slaves. They didn't just kill someone fast, they killed them horribly. In Document B they tried to bribe a black former slave, whose name was Colby, who was elected to the Georgia State Legislature. “They offended me 5,000 dollars to go with them and said they would pay me 2,500 in cash if I would let another man go to the legislature in my place”. The KKK knew that people in high positions could change the laws so they went after them with threats or money to change their minds. When Colby refused their bribe they took him to the woods and beat him for 2-3 hours. This just shows the amount they're willing to go to keep injustices
