The South ended reconstruction because the KKK was killing many people. A piece of evidence is “...foully murdered by the Ku Klux…” (Tourgee). The KKK is killing government officials just because of their support toward reconstruction. Another piece of evidence is that in the cartoon it shows a donkey with the KKK who hung scalawags and carpetbaggers (Klan Cartoon). The cartoon shows the KKK is targeting scalawags and carpetbaggers because they support reconstruction. A counterclaim to go against the claims would be everyone is fighting in the courthouse (Colored Rule in a Reconstructed State). The South ended

It was clear to people in the late 1800s that the Civil War caused many national problems along with problems within the union. However, the Civil War assuaged many problems for the country. For example, slavery was abolished, the supremacy of the national government had been confirmed, and secession had been proved false. Some people may believe that the main reason why the congress’ reconstruction efforts to ensure equal rights to the freedmen failed was because virtually no one in America thought blacks were equal to whites. Basically it was because people still have racial thoughts; slaves didn’t get to fully acquire the meaning and prerogatives of their rights; in other words they were uneducated.

The truth is both sides ruined the chances of reconstruction.They are both at fault. The south and the northerners had an equal part at failing to continue the reconstruction because from the south there was an organization; a cult called the Ku klux Klan.The kkk did not accept african americans. They were so cruel and inhumane to them the kkk would slaughter , manipulate, and even taunt them till the african americans would fear them(Doc A, B)As for the North , there was a lot of corruption due to Former President grant that committed fraud and caused the “ panic of 1873 “ which caused lots of jobs to discontinue and people to worry from it.(doc C)

The North and South both ended Reconstruction. After the Civil War there was a time if rebuilding the nation called Reconstruction. During this time everyone had their own thoughts about the North and South, people of different race, and political offices. This leads us to a major thought, how the North and South ended Reconstruction. As people targeted carpetbaggers and scalawags, African American voters and Government Officials Reconstruction became more tense, also problems and racism in the North sprung about.

In hindsight it is sometimes claimed that Reconstruction was a failure. Although there was some good that came out of the Reconstruction it was mostly just a relentless uphill battle against Southerners and immoral politicians that were here to delay change and keep racism alive. Reconstruction brought the Ku Klux Klan who displayed great resistance, and poverty that swept the South once the blacks were freed. The freedom of these black slaves led to discriminatory legislatures such as the Black Codes and the Jim Crow laws to keep the blacks constrained from actually being free. The South was then encountered with corruption and high property taxes, as a rebuild was in order to reestablish the war torn part of the nation.

Geoffrey Chaucer once said, “all good things must come to an end”. This quote perfectly describes the period of Reconstruction in the United States. During 1876, America gained a lot of opportunities and technology, such as the recently developed railroads. They still had to recover from the Civil War, so they started Reconstruction Policies to reconnect the southern and northern states into one union. The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed to help African Americans gain their rights, but then the new election came up. It was very controversial and to avoid a crisis, the government made Rutherford B.Hayes president if he removed federal soldiers from the South. This officially ended Reconstruction. Reconstruction has been brutally murdered! For a little over a decade after the Civil War, the victorious North launched a campaign of social, economic, and political recovery in the former Confederacy and to readmit the land in the former Confederacy back into the United States as states. Reconstruction yielded many benefits for African Americans. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments freed African Americans, made them citizens, and gave them the right to vote respectively. The Freedmen’s Bureau also provided African Americans and poor whites with education, jobs, and supplies. Despite this, Reconstruction was cut short in 1877. The North killed Reconstruction because of racism, negligence, and distractions.

After the Civil War reached its end, the time came to work on restoring the disparate pieces of the nation. Throughout this crucial time in American history (dubbed the “Reconstruction Era”) blacks and whites responded to the changes very differently. And here’s how. Slaves were finally free due to the passing of the 13th amendment that abolished slavery in the United States, as well as guaranteeing their citizenship. Theoretically, this meant that blacks now had equal opportunities as whites.

Who killed reconstruction? This is a huge topic that is discussed a lot even today. Reconstruction is the period after the civil war when the south was completely destroyed and the slaves were granted to be free and citizens of the United States. The north were the states that believed in making products and trading goods with Great Britain. They also had in industries to help the economy and the North were all Republicans. In the South they believed in agriculture for their economy and they were all Democrats. The South used farming and plantations to get products and live their life. I believe that the North killed reconstruction because of the corruption of the government and white, northern racism towards the south.

In 1861 through 1877 The civil war brought a disturbance between the North and the South that was not easily repaired. After the unions victory the government had to create a plan for  reconstruction. After Abraham lincoln's assassination democract Andrew Johnson stepped foward and had to make sure Lincoln's plans for reamitting the southinto the union went through. The struggle for power with congress would later lead to his impeachment.

After the North won the civil war, it was time to rebuild this nation. This period of reconstruction was supposed to have a profound change on society. Unfortunately this was not the case. Reconstruction did not fundamentally alter this nation. Not to say that nothing happened, but nothing that really made a change or difference happened. First, the control of the south was given right back to the planter elite. Also, even though slavery was abolished; blacks were not free. Finally, Congress and President Johnson could not get along. Although the civil war reshaped this country profoundly. The reconstruction efforts did little but scratch a surface, before being quickly wiped away.

The outburst of the Civil War forever changed the future of the American nation. At first, it began as a fight to protect the Union, not as a struggle to free the slaves. Many citizens from the North and South felt that the conflict would ultimately decide both issues. Slavery was one of the primary issues which physically divided the northern U.S. from the Southern U.S. during the Civil War. Even after the Reconstruction Era it continue to divide the two. The Southern resistance to ending slavery was the main reason as to why the South believed in rejecting outsider ideals and it helped establish the Southern Code of Honor that emphasizes aggression and violence.

The Civil War left a country divided not only by property lines and borders but by beliefs as well. Not just religious beliefs, moral beliefs also. It left both sides, north and south struggling, trying to figure out what their next move towards reuniting the divided America was going to be. The period following the end of the Civil War would become known as the “Reconstruction Era.” An era that raised just as many questions as it did answers. A reconstruction of America that seems to carry on many decades later.

“A Mississippi lynch mob of 2,000 burns an accused black rapist alive, a coroner’s jury returns a verdict of death ‘due to unknown causes,’ and Mississippi governor Theodore G. Bilbo says the state has ‘neither the time nor the money’ to go in to the matter” (Trager 792). The government in the South was not willing to give the blacks a break.
