The Reconstruction was a period of roughly ten years that came after the American Civil War. During this time black Americans were able to vote, attend school and even hold public office. These ten years were a small break for black Americans following the end of slavery and preceding the Jim Crow Laws of the South. There is a question to be answered, who killed Reconstruction? There are those who say that the South lead to the end of Reconstruction because of the actions of hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. However, the most important cause of the end of Reconstruction were the actions of the North because of lingering racism and a lack of caring by Northerners.

Geoffrey Chaucer once said, “all good things must come to an end”. This quote perfectly describes the period of Reconstruction in the United States. During 1876, America gained a lot of opportunities and technology, such as the recently developed railroads. They still had to recover from the Civil War, so they started Reconstruction Policies to reconnect the southern and northern states into one union. The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed to help African Americans gain their rights, but then the new election came up. It was very controversial and to avoid a crisis, the government made Rutherford B.Hayes president if he removed federal soldiers from the South. This officially ended Reconstruction. Reconstruction was an era, from 1863 to 1877, used to rebuilt the damage done in the South by the Civil War. Many people resisted in the South, so it was difficult to carry out the new ideas of Reconstruction. Rebuilding the United States was not an easy task, only lasted 12 years ending in 1877. The Compromise of 1877 settled the intensely disputed 1876 U.S. presidential election, which was pulled federal troops out of state in the South, and ended the Reconstruction Era. The United State come up with three Amendment to help the African Americans there are the 13th Amendment: ended slavery, 14th Amendment: gave blacks Americans citizenship and civil rights and the last one was the 15th Amendment: right to vote. The victory in the Civil War in 1865 gave 4 million slaves freedom, but the Reconstruction in the south introduced a problem. For a while it was a dream that reconstruction might come true. Reconstruction was the action of rebuilding in the south. Many were hopeful that the Reconstruction may happen. There was terrorist attacks and acts of prejudice going on but who or what killed reconstruction? Although the South was an important contributor The north caused reconstruction to end.

The reconstruction, which lasted from 1865 - 1877, had some feats but largely was a failure at accomplishing its goals. It succeeded in readmitting the Southern states to the union, but failed in integrating them fully; the Nation still remained divided by political lines. It helped to rebuild a war ravaged South until the North lost interest in the South and it gave former slaves and people of color more rights and political representation than they ever had before, but the South passed various codes, tests, and laws to limit the black resurgence and keep the old power structure. By 1870 the reconstruction successfully readmitted all the southern states that seceded under Andrew Johnson's plan, however all the states restored their conservative governments within 9 years of readmission (reconstruction map) because of Andrew Johnson's leniency to the South. After the division of the South into military districts in 1867, the governments established were under control of the radical Republicans and gave blacks the power to vote and participate in the government.

After the Civil War, the South was strongly altered through a series of passed laws and acts in the a period known as the Reconstruction Era. This plan of reconstruction which was to bring reformation to the lives of Southern African Americans lasted from 1865-1877. This plan was brought by President Lincoln . Unfortunately he was shot and killed by a leader of a Confederate sympathizer, John Booth. As a result, President Jackson took office and was left in charge. The reconstruction was a great necessity for the fact that the result of this was a united nation between the North and South including the equality of African Americans.

The reconstruction period in American history can be described as the period in time after the American Civil War when southern states were reorganized back in the union. During this time freedom for citizens even those who were enslaved could bring up a very controversial debate. Some may say that those citizens had the right to freedom, while others may even disagree with that. In this paper many topics will be discussed, from the reconstruction period itself, to whether or not freedom can be defined differently by freed people. The topic of who actually had the power to control how freedom will be discussed as well. In this paper certain documents will be analyzed and even compared to other documents.

Beginning in 1865 and ending in 1877 the Reconstruction Era was an Era that caused many changes in America. Reconstruction was a plan that Abraham Lincoln mentioned in 1863 for the aftermath of the Civil War. Before Lincoln could accomplish his plan of Reconstruction he was assassinated allowing the Reconstruction idea to be pass to his successor Andrew Johnson. One main reason for the Reconstruction Era was to establish rights for all freedmen. During the start of the Reconstruction Era the South was in political, social, and economic turmoil; however, the Union was responding to the South in a very unpleasant way by planning to regain Confederate states and change the way of the southern government operates to make it easier for many freedmen to live.

Wanted the rebuild relations with the south and believed the faster this happened the quicker the country could heal. Lincoln was assassinated , only days after Robert E. Lee’s surrender and didn’t have the chance to carry out his plans and vision for reconstruction. Lincolns plans for Reconstruction were taken over by his vice president, Johnson, who became president after Lincoln’s death and applied the reconstruction policies. President Johnson believed the sooner relationship between the north and south could be mended the sooner the country could move forward and grow. Radical republicans managed to gain extensive votes in the fall election.

After the Civil War ended, the North played an important part in the failure of Reconstruction. According to Gerald Danzer, “Northern voters grew indifferent to events in the South” (Document C). The North was fed up with hearing about slavery. which caused the North to neglect their duties

Reconstruction was an achievement in that it reestablished the United States as a unified country. By 1877, the majority of the previous Confederate states had drafted new constitutions, recognized the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments, and pledged loyalty to the U.S. government. Reconstruction additionally at last settled the states' rights versus federalism debate that had been an issue since the 1790s.

Following the Civil War, the Reconstruction Era began. During this time, the southern part of the United States attempted a transformation directed by Congress from 1863 to 1877. Known for its successes and failures, the Reconstruction was a time of great pain and an infinite amount of questions. As well as many long term, short term, positive, negative, social, and political effects.

Reconstruction in the 1800’s was the rebuilding of the United States. But the question is, Who killed reconstruction? The reconstruction was from 1865 to 1877 it occurred after all of the slaves were freed. Important groups during the reconstruction were the KKK, freedmen, carpetbaggers, scalawags, and radical republicans. After the Civil War reconstruction wasn’t the only change. Income taxes were introduced to people and the Federal Government became more powerful. Our dear president Lincoln was also assassinated on April 14, 1865 by John Wilkes Booth. I used many different sources. Primary sources from people who lived during the reconstruction and civil war. I also have secondary sources. The North killed reconstruction because they kept changing their minds and shifting their attention, they were still looking at the freedmen as slaves, and they didn’t do anything about the KKK.
