This is a reflective essay based on my attendance at a multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting whilst on my two-week placement at a local mental health day hospital. The aim of this essay is to discuss the importance of the multidisciplinary team within the mental health environment and discuss factors that can influence the success or failure of multidisciplinary teams. Mental health teams generally comprise of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists and social workers, but other therapists such as family therapists, psychotherapists and counsellors might also become involved in the care of the patient (Perkins & Repper 1998). He is very concerned for the safety of his mother. The occupational therapist suggested she visit to assess Kate's safety in her home concerning these issues. The social worker discussed the possibility of home carers but the mental health nurse who knows Kate well, tells of her concerns that Kate is never at home. The social worker suggested a case meeting involving the son who could possibly ensure that his mother takes her medication regularly and to try and ensure that she remains at home until the carers arrive. It was agreed that if this did not work or was unsuitable for Kate or her son, any problems identified could be discussed and resolved at a future MDT meeting. Feelings I felt very comfortable and very accepted within the MDT meeting. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed and everybody there seemed to have something to contribute. Everyone was encouraged to participate and I felt that I could have contributed to the discussion if I had known the patient better. I feel they would have listened to my ideas and not dismissed them due to me being a student. Everybody communicated well with each other and had the best interests of Kate in mind and so discussions were made until the best outcome was achieved for her. This demonstrates the benefit and importance of communication within a team and how all contributions within meetings should be valued (Perkins & Repper 1998). Evaluation There are many

Critical reflection is vital to develop evidence based practice for safe and quality approaches to professional nursing practice. Nursing professionals should critically reflect on events to identify what health professionals might do to improve their practice and reduce the risk of a similar error. Reflective practice can help to learn from their mistakes, be empowered and most importantly to deliver best possible care to patient as nurses must work closely with their patients to develop a therapeutic relationship. Critical reflection is a valuable skill to ensure patient centred care. This practice promotes personal development by enhancing students’ self-awareness, their sense of community, and their sense of their own capacities for

A rather hotly debated current topic in healthcare is the assertion that mental health suffers more staff and specialist shortages than any other sections of healthcare. Mental care takes up a unique and important place in the healthcare sector, especially in the nursing workforce. In mental health nursing, some workers are engaged in acute care while others are engaged in the larger mental health community. In the latter setting, nurses work and interact in integrated teams with communities and professionals such as social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists (McAllister et al., p. 575). Clearly, mental healthcare integrates multiple disciplines working to improve patients’ mental wellbeing.
Reflective practice is a regulatory requisite that ¬future nurses, such as myself should undertake in order to be able to conduct proper care towards patients. It is also the capacity to reflect on ones action to engage in a process of constant learning by using a range of strategies in orders to expand my knowledge. This essay will divulge in my reflection as to why I am pursuing nursing as a profession as well as describe and expound on how reflective practice will aid future nurses. I will begin by explaining my reasons as to why I chose this profession as a career, closely followed by the meaning of reflective practice itself, and finally, how reflective practice will be used in my future occupation.
They asked whether they could come in on the same day. I agreed to see her. Steffani was tearful and indicated a sense of confusion. She stated that she did not know why she was feeling that she wished to be “gone”. She credibly denied having plan or intention. She also expressed a wish to not feel what she was feeling. Her mother was visibly distraught. She was worried about her daughter. At the same time, she presented with a wish to deny that her daughter was having an extraordinarily challenging feelings. I recommended that they would make regular therapy appointment with me for Steffani. Furthermore, I recommended her to be seen by a prescriber. Pharmacotherapy was actually proposed by Steffani; however, she did not wished her mother to know that it was her idea. Thus, I presented as my recommendation. I did so because agreed with Steffani that a medication, concurrent with psychotherapy, can be helpful for her mood. Her mother expressed ambivalence toward the idea of medication. Nevertheless, Laura made ongoing appointment with me as well as an appointment with a nurse practitioner at the site.
I was not sure what to expect coming into this particular meeting because every family is different and you never know how they are going to react about having an intern present. I also felt that I wish I had been given more time to look over the documents and the clients file before having to review them with the parents. I enjoyed that the client’s mother and father came prepared with questions and information to provide us with. I also enjoyed how eager they were to get the meeting going as well as the services

Ruddick, F. (2013) ‘Promoting mental health and wellbeing’, Nursing Standard, 27 (24), pp.35-39 is the article that I found most beneficial and relevant that will enable me to explain and analyse research or evaluate ]my future role and professional practice as a mental health nurse in promoting the mental health and wellbeing of Patients. It is vital that all nurses see this as imperative and an aspect that should be prioritised alongside the other as they inevitably affect each other and act as preventative measures that will avert associated health conditions.
