In Othello, Desdemona has a relentless nature which allows her to love and care unconditionally. Throughout the play, Desdemona has a determined attitude towards her beliefs and she does not believe other’s opinions. This is shown when Desdemona and Emilia were having a conversation. Emilia tells Desdemona that Othello shows jealously but Desdemona immediately disagrees with Emilia telling her to “Believe me, I had rather have lost my purse/Full of crusadoes And but my noble Moor/ Is true of mind, and made of no such baseness/As jealous creatures are, it were enough/To put him to ill thinking” (3.4.24-29). Throughout ‘Othello’, Shakespeare uses the manipulation of the protagonist, by the antagonist, Iago, to present a play controlled by men. In such a male dominated society, Shakespeare presents the women in the play as tragic victims at the hands of their husbands, in particular Desdemona and Emilia. Throughout this essay I will relate to the Aristotelian and Senecan descriptions of tragedy to come to a conclusion of how in ‘Othello’ Shakespeare presents women as tragic victims of men.

Although Emilia doesn’t intentionally lie to Desdemona she fails to tell her that she took the handkerchief as a token to win praise from Iago. This causes conflict between Desdemona and Othello just as it is the reason for Othello’s jealousy.

Shakespeare depicts the two women as sharing a close bond with one another. Their friendship builds throughout the play even with Emilia's act of betrayal. In act 4 scene 3, Desdemona reveals that her "mother had a maid called Barbary" who died singing the willow song (4.3, 25). Desdemona opens up to her Emilia about personal memories from her past. Sharing this recollection is not something two women would do unless they are friends. Having Desdemona share her personal memories further establishes the relationship with Emilia. In addition, Emilia proves her underrated intelligence by standing up for what she believes is right. Desdemona, Othello's wife, and Emilia's relationship grows because of her great loyalty towards her. At the end of the play Emilia stands up for Desdemona because Othello kills her. She explains Desdemona's true love for him and would never do anything to hurt him, which proves Desdemona's innocence. Not only does Emilia stand up for Desdemona, but she also voices her opinion to Othello. Emilia shows no fear standing up to Othello to prove to him that his wife has always been faithful. At first Othello finds it implausible but then Emilia says, "Thou art rash as fire, to say that she was false. O, she was heavenly true!" (Shakespeare V: ii, 165-166).Women are looked at in Othello as unintelligent and unfaithful, but Emilia changes that stereotype by standing up to the men. From the start Emilia and Iago's relationship always seemed rocky. Emilia's confidence in herself shows that she is not afraid to stand up to her husband. Emilia realizes the danger she puts herself in when she stands up to Iago. In order to make things right, she does whatever it takes, even if that means ruining their marriage or taking her life.

At the beginning of the drama, Desdemona wants to marry Othello; even through her father doesn’t want her to. She makes the choice by herself in Act I, scene iii in an act of willfulness. However, in the final scene, when she is murdered, Emilia ask her, “O, who hath done this deed?” Desdemona says , “Nobody, I myself. Farewell. Commend me to my kind lord. O, farewell” (V.ii.133–134). Desdenona takes responsibility of her death because she wants to protect her husband.

In the play, Othello, there are many different representations of characters and archetypes. The women of the play are seen as symbolic representations of how the men in Shakespeare’s generation saw women. The women of the play are all individual characters with different personalities. They are seen as objects but stray from the average mold. Shakespeare converts these women into the play with roles that represent the strong stereotypes of women and how they are not what the rumors portray them as.

In her final moments, Desdemona chooses not to blame Othello for her death because she saw that the honor of their love was more important than honesty. After Othello was convinced that Desdemona was cheating on him, Othello had started to show his disappointment with her. He had even gone as far as hitting her (4.1 134). Despite this, Desdemona continued to stay true to Othello. Othello, though, decides to kill her. Desdemona senses a change in Othello and she has a feeling that she will die soon due to the hands of Othello. This does not stop her, though, from continuing to care for Othello. Even when Desdemona was found after Othello strangles her, she still believed that her death was not the fault of Othello. Emilia comes into the couple’s bedroom after Othello smothers Desdemona, but hears Desdemona cry out. Seeing her dying, Emilia asks who would do this. Desdemona replies that it was her fault: “Nobody – I myself. Farewell / Commend me to my kind lord. O, farewell!” (5. 2. 125-126). Not only does she try to protect Othello’s reputation by blaming herself, Desdemona tells Emilia to remind Othello about her showing that she stills respects Othello. By trying to hide the fact that Othello had murdered her, Desdemona has chosen to put the honor of their love above honesty.

Women, especially Desdemona but Emilia as well, are obviously targets of male violence in Othello. For some reason Shakespeare’s play often put the emphasis on the role of the female characters and their influence on the main male characters. For instance, the result of the passionate love of Romeo for Juliet, the effect of Ophelia’s insanity had on hamlet, and so on. In Othello, Shakespeare made Desdemona and the other women in the play no different; Othello’s jalousie and love made the play a tragedy. Shakespeare made Desdemona the faithful wife of Othello. She was such a kindhearted and wished to make everything work even when the situation where she lost her handkerchief she tried to fix the situation and calming Othello. However, her innocent sympathy towards Cassio made lago’s lies more credible. Overall, one can say that her naïve nature causes her to become a target for the men in the play.

Desdemona foreshadows her own death by telling Emilia about the willow song. Desdemona thinks that no woman would be unfaithful to their husbands. Emilia thinks that if no one is looking she would cheat on her husband, she says women have the same desire as men. She also explains that if the women cheats it is the mans fault. In the meantime Iago torments Othello until he faints by continually bringing up that Cassio slept with Desdemona. Pish! Noses, ears,and lips. --Is't possible?--Confess--handkerchief!--O devil!--". Othello is very nervous that his wife is potentially sleeping with Cassio. Iago then makes sure that Othello hears Bianca and Cassio talking about his relationship but Othello thinks he is talking about Desdemona, here we can see that the character of Othello has changed a great deal. Cassio is killed by Roderigo which puts Desdemona in harm of being murdered. Desdemona still loves Othello but he murders her because he was tricked into Iago’s evil

At this point the dramatic action has culminated into the final tragedy, Othello is at his most vulnerable and Iago’s machievellian manipulations combined with Othello’s insecurity about his identity and patriarchal notions have collided into catastrophic action. Desdemona is dead. Even after the cataclysmic tragedy has occurred, there is still a disobedience of the patriarchal authority that has transformed Desdemona into a lifeless victim. Emilia stands up for Desdemona who can no longer do it herself, she courageously defies the orders of the males who are commanding her to leave and go up to bed. Emilia refuses to obey them and is not frightened even when the men begin to draw their swords, she stands her ground and dauntlessly states: “I will not.” Even though it was moderately due to Emilia’s actions that these events unfolded, she manages to redeem herself by exposing Iago for the malicious deeds he committed but dies herself, a proud woman defying the patriarchal restrictions of her society. During this scene, the “Willow Song” returns strengthening the concept of women, regardless of status being able to share the same
