One often overlooked point about “free” college tuition is that it is not ever free. The money does not just appear out of nowhere. What people normally mean by the statement of “free” college, it means free college for students. If the students are not paying than who would have to pay? The only other option would be the federal government. Right now, Americans owe more than $875 billion dollars in student loans. If the cost of tuition continues to grow at the rate it is, that number is only going to grow. If the federal government were to pay this, it would only further the country in debt.

College tuition is very expensive and many people are unable to attend due to the overall cost of tuition, books, room and board. The high price of a college education is unfair to the bright students who have limited resources. These students are at a disadvantage because of lack of funds. The United States should find a way to provide free tuition to all students who want an education.

Introducing free college tuition would have a positive impact of The United States, even so much as two year associate’s degree would have a hung impact. Should college be free or is it good the way it is? This is one of the most debatable questions of this generation. Like every other thing it would also have its pros and cons. Many say that it would greatly help a country while others say that nothing is truly free and someone must pay for it. However the growth of a country’s economy over the long run is miles more than the loose in the short term. So in my opinion College should be free for everyone.

In particular, President Obama has proposed to offer two years free in community colleges throughout America (Mangan et al.). His proposal may not pertain to all public institutions that offer higher education, but it is already a huge step in the right direction. Admittedly, the problem has not been solved yet because the federal government is making a profit off of the students by imposing interest rates with the student loans. This means that the total that must be paid will be even more than what the students initially borrowed. Other factors include the time it would take to make this achievable. There is a lot of planning and logistics that have to go into doing this, which therefore means that it would take a while for it to even happen. Certainly, there will also be several complications that are faced due to potential opposition. Even more so, the federal government is like a business where they enjoy making a profit, and they get to decide where they want to invest their earnings. The United States is already trillions of dollars in debt. Spending more on higher education would add to an economy that already has too much debt. It would therefore be very irresponsible. Just as someone should not spend more when they are in debt, the country should also not be spending more. In order to reduce the debt, the country would have to cut back on spending. The proposal for free college does just the opposite and is not what the economy needs to take care of its debt.

Should the United States develop a system for free college tuition? Free college tuition would benefit many college students and people interested in getting a higher education because as of the moment the education system is built around money and having to get student loans or scholarships if you cannot come up with tuition up front. It would also take a lot of money out of the economy for the first 10 years or so, mainly because it would take people being able to graduate with a degree for a higher salary for the United States to be able to charge more on taxes to make up for the money lost going to pay for the faculty salary and the student textbook fees. Many are for a free college tuition system but many are also against it because nobody wants to pay even more on taxes but once the people who are against it would see the amount of money begin put back into the economy from the raised taxes there would be able to see the goal of the whole idea. The United States needs to develop a system for free college to give students the ability to get an education they never would have been able to get before and would allow for more money to be brought into the economy from more Americans getting higher paying jobs and make the U.S. a more prosperous nation.
