The Reserve Officer Training Corps, or ROTC, has been an interesting experience for me so far. This is my first semester being in cadet status as a simultaneous membership program (SMP) cadet and I am currently a military science (MS) two student. I am assigned to the 132nd Brigade Support Battalion Company E (FSC) (173) in the Wisconsin National Guard and before this, I was in the Army Reserves for about four years as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic (91B). I achieved the rank of specialist (E-4), and the funny thing is that a couple of months before I contracted to become a cadet, my unit was wanting me to attend Warrior Leadership Course (WLC) to become a sergeant (E-5), but since I knew that my desired career path is to become a commissioned officer, a noncommissioned officer slot wasn’t right for me since I would be a …show more content…

I ended up asking my unit to give the course slot to another deserving specialist. Through the military science program, I have taken MSL 154, 101, 102, 201, and 202, so taking the three credit MSL 399 class was my only option before I become a third year cadet. For this course, I was required to observe, and help out certain third year cadets with a prescribed Thursday night ROTC lab, which usually is executed from 1700-1900. The junior year cadet that I aided was Cadet Esser in the Patrol Base lab. Prior to the start of planning of the lab, I had asked him what I can do to help execute this lab in the best way possible. The mission for the lab was that the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point/Pointer Battalion will conduct a Patrol Orders lab no later than 301700MAR17 in order to train the third year cadets to flip operation orders into patrol orders and strengthen their confidence in briefing.
