An important message that Scott O’Dell produced frequently throughout the novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins was the importance of resilience. Resiliency is the ability to face and overcome mental and physical difficulties and challenges. Although most importantly she was indomitable and determined to not give up and survive. Karana faced many major difficulties although she learned to adapt. This was shown first when the Aleuts came to the island in search of otter and killed many men of her tribe. Karana and the rest of the people living on the island of Ghalas-at learned to live without the comforts of many men:” It was finally agreed the rest of the men would hunt and the women harvest.” When the rest of the tribe left on a boat and Karana and her brother, Ramo were left on the island she still prepared to care for her and Ramo until the boat would supposedly come back for them both in the spring. Karana soon faced major mental obstacles as Ramo got attacked by wolves and the boat did not come back for many years. So Karana takes on the tasks that the men in her tribe would have done such as making spears, hunting and building canoes to survive. She as well avenged Ramo’s death by killing many of the wild dogs that were a threat to her. Lastly Karana made a house out of whale bones and sinew to take shelter in and keep a variety of pets. Karana lived on the island for many, many years surviving only on the skills she had to eventually have a boat rescue her and take her away to the mainland. This showed that the resilience Karana showed was worth it in the end.

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand provides a detailed description of how Louie Zamperini survives being a prisoner of war. The author uses several ways to develop the central idea of resilience and perseverance. One way the author develops this main idea is by giving vivid descriptions. During the bombings of Wake Atoll, the author uses graphic and vivid phrases like “The islands were now a blaze of garish light.” This quote is just one instance where the author highlights how much resilience was needed to survive this dangerous situation. Secondly, the author develops the main idea by using problem and solution to show the resilience, grit, and perseverance needed for this difficult situation. The text states ““Phil was fighting to get out” and

The Outsiders Essay – Describe an interesting theme from a text you have studied. Explain why this theme is interesting.
For some people the strong word resilience can impact one’s life in a significant way. Overall, resiliency is having the ability to still enjoy and continue your life with positive, good times, regardless of a hard past or bad experience. It can be shown in various ways throughout a text, including the setting, the plot, and characterization. This is how the texts, The Other Wes Moore, The Art of Resilience, and The Third and Final Continent share their common theme. This theme the three texts convey is that resiliency is vital for a positive as well as successful life.
The memoir The Glass Castle, written by Jeannette Walls, takes the reader on her life journey as a child and how her family represents resilience. But, what exactly does it mean to be resilient? Resilience is the capability of a person to bounce back from a hard time, to get back on their feet after stumbling, to understand that there is no end and you can always become better. This essay will model the explanation of resilience in my words, the explanation of resilience from both what was seen in the memoir and Elizabeth Edwards, and how these three tie together to model the same title; resilience.
Resilience is the ability to overcome struggles. In the book Night, Elie Wiesel is put into a concentration camp during the Holocaust. During his time there, Elie would not have been able to be so resilient without his father by his side. In Boys in The Boat, Joe Rantz would also have struggled to overcome his struggles without his dad. However, without Joe’s father treating him so badly throughout his childhood Joe might not have been so motivated to prove to his father that he was strong. In both books, Joe and Elie both demonstrate resilience by using their family to overcome their struggles.
This summer I read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and it was amazing. I really loved every page of Jeannette Wall’s novel, and it just seemed to get better and better as I kept reading. Wall’s novel is recognized as “a remarkable memoir of redemption and resilience.” But what is resilience? To be honest I couldn’t really truly comprehend what resilience was. I had a very vague definition of it, but, not anything I could explain with certainty. In this paper I will find my own definition of resilience, which’ll not only help me finish a summer assignment but also help me to fully understand resilience.
On August 24th was the Miami Dolphins football game versus the Atlanta Falcons. Although it was a preseason game it was still important because, the week before we got beat by the Dallas Cowboys 41-21,and we didn't want that to happen again. So in practice they worked harder and harder Intel it was game day. When they got off the buses they meant business, they looked ready to go. Everyone sat down at there sets 5...4...3...2...1 the boom the ball was kicked soaring as high as the birds.
As seniors about to embark on a journey into the adult world, it’s important to be prepared for what college professors expect in an essay. For years the killer whale, also known as Orcinus orca, has been drawing the attention of the public through the entertainment industry. These marine mammals have been bringing in billions of dollars to amusement parks such as Sea World, but at what cost? An idea that these killer whales can live happily and content while in captivity may be going through the minds of the public, but this cannot be further away from the truth. To have such complex creatures in captivity is not morally correct and there are many points against it, such as their level of emotional competence, violence between the killer whales, violence of killer of whales towards trainers, shorter lifespans, physical harm, and their level of intelligence. After taking a look at how these creatures function and the conditions they are put in while in captivity, there is no question about whether or not these mammals should be kept in captivity; an experience such as this affects these marine mammals just about the same as it would affect a human because of their high highly developed emotions and complexity. Since these industries do not have a natural authority over these creatures no matter the cause, the best thing they could do for these killer whales is to stop capturing them and return those who are capable back to the wild.
Resilience is defined as the quality that allows people to be knocked down and come back stronger than ever. Resilience is demonstrated throughout the novel Defending Jacob by William Landay, and the ancillary texts “If” by Rudyard Kipling, and “The Third and Final Continent” by Jhumpa Lahiri though different literary devices. The similar conflicts of Defending Jacob and “Third and Final Continent” help develop a theme of resilience throughout the stories. Another literary device that helps to show this theme in Defending Jacob and “If” is point of view. Finally, the theme is displayed once more in the novel and “Third and Final Continent” through the use of characterization. The theme of keeping one’s head through troubled times and not giving up is developed through the use of conflict, point of view, and characterization in Defending Jacob, “If”, and “The Third and Final Continent”.
Has anyone lived a life without misfortune? Doubtable; even the person with what could be described as the ideal life deals with some form of adversity. The novel, Speak, and the short story, The Third and Final Continent, both use plot as a way to convey themes of hardship. Moreover, these texts both use symbolism in order to develop their themes as well. The Art of Resilience and Speak utilize characterization as a method of developing their respective themes. Speak, The Third and Final Continent, and The Art of Resilience each deal with the theme that all people must learn to cope with adverse situations.
