Joan Templeton’s “The Doll House Backlash: Criticism, Feminism, and Ibsen” criticizes author, Henrik Ibsen and his feminist societal drama, A Doll House. Templeton’s article discusses multiple criticisms of A Doll House theme and one of its’ main characters, Nora Helmer. Evidence in Templeton’s article supports her assertions about Ibsen’s text, because it explains how the text can be related to every human’s truth. Obviously, Templeton believes that A Doll House does not represent a societal feminist drama but a societal drama for humans in everyday life. Templeton says, “it is argued, never meant to write a play about the highly topical subject of women’s rights;” (28). When researching A Doll House, Templeton realized that numerous critics made Ibsen’s play into a promotion for “propaganda feminists” (28). Feminists believed that A Doll House was created to speak on the struggle and rights of women. Joan Templeton’s argument about feminism is convincing because she supports Ibsen’s intentions as being a person that just speaks the truth about humans let alone, not just female society. The worst aspects of “The Doll House Backlash: Criticism, Feminism, and Ibsen” was Templeton failing to address other characters in A Doll House. Addressing other characters could have helped Templeton in her arguments about feminism and Ibsen.
