At the beginning of the war, the British was way stronger than the Americans and had more opportunities to win with its affluence resources and advanced technologies. United Kingdom was the most powerful empire at the time with its advanced industry development and navy force. They just took over the east of Mississippi river as well as Canada from France. There were about 30,000 British army soldiers based in Canada in supervision of the North America. In comparison however, there were only 3,000,000 people in the whole colonist area in total and one-sixth of them were actually leaning towards the British, namely the pro-British "Loyalist" (Washington and Continental Army, 1967). It was relying heavily on the American colonist for more resources. The British army were far from its mainland and lacked local support for food and human resources. On the other hand, the American were able to get help from the Britain’s enemies. Both military had a low effectiveness at the time with scattered and conflicting leadership for Britain and weak military force for the Americans. The Saratoga victory that took place on September 19, 1777 is considered to be the turning point in the Revolutionary War against the Britain. 600 in the British troops died while 300 people from the American died (Sieminski, 1990). Before this battle, the Americans had been losing ground to the British and had been merely fighting to defend. With this victory, the American greatly gained some confidence and started to turn to the offense side to win back the war. The Yorktown battle was the last battle in the war that led to the peace. During the war in October 1781, the British colonial army was greatly defeated. This battle was led by George Washington with the help of the French army.
