He is a very angry, furious, fierce and violent boy who does not seem to have any control over his anger. Although he might be a very angry and impatient, he is also honest, strong, reflective and hardworking person by the end of the book. What is the cause of Cole’s anger? Cole Matthews is the main character of Spirit Bear. He is a 15 year old boy, I know he is because he was held back in school for one year and he is a freshman. Cole gets into a lot of trouble, so much that he has been in trouble with the law nonstop since he was just 9 years old. I read this on page 5 it says “been in trouble with the law half his life”. In his past he had a lot of trouble with his parents, his father beats him when he gets drunk, and his mom ignores whats happening. It says on page 47 & 48 that “Cole's father jumped to his feet. “I don't beat you, and you know that.” his face flushed red.”I’ve given you swats when you deserved them.” also on page 28 it says “”he drink’s until he turns into a monster. Mom just gets drunk and pretends nothing had happened. It's like a bad dream I can't wake up from ”.

In May of 1998, Kipland Kinkel brought a gun to his school. Over the course of two days this escalated from: being sent home, to murdering his father and mother, to murdering 2 students and wounding 26, earning a lifetime sentence of 111 years and 8 months in prison. In the court case being examined, the presiding judge addresses the original case, defendants ground for appeal, and the justification for the State’s decision to deny the appeal. Judge Haselton effectively uses ethos, logos, and pathos to support the Higher Court’s decision to deny the appeal because the original sentence was constitutional and just.

Responsibility is a theme that is carried throughout both books, but used in extremely diverse ways. Touching Spirit Bear is a story about forgiveness and healing, and Cole has to take responsibility for his past actions, and on improving himself emotionally. He has to forgive his father, the people around him, the Spirit Bear, and most importantly he has to forgive himself. Cole also takes responsibility for helping Peter heal from Cole’s beating, emotionally, because Peter is suicidal. Cole tells Peter, “’My dad has beaten me my whole life,’ he explained. ‘But I know now he never meant to hurt me. He was beaten by his father, and that’s all he knew.’ Cole swallowed a big lump that had formed in his throat. ‘I learned to forgive,’ he said. ‘Not just others, but also myself.’” (Mikaelsen, 214).
