The purpose of this speech was in case that it was a disaster and the astronauts died in the moon landing. The writer of this article uses both ethos and pathos. He appeals pathos of being realistic to the situation and presenting all of them as heroes and also, he honors their death which is appealing to the emotions of many people. The way he claims ethos is also in the speech because of President Nixon. Since President Nixon was a president, this makes the speech more honest and honorable then if was given by anyone.
