Bell hooks, a cultural critic and social activist argues in her essay Seeing and Making Culture: Representing the Poor,” that the poor are portrayed terribly in modern America. Having grown up in a poor household, she has personal knowledge and experience of the prejudices faced by the poor and uses it to craft a compelling argument.

Advertisements are everywhere. From billboards, to magazines, to newspapers, flyers and TV commercials, chances are that you won’t go a day without observing some sort of ad. In most cases, companies use these ads as persuasive tools, deploying rhetorical appeals—logos, pathos, and ethos—to move their audiences to think or act in a certain way. The two magazine ads featured here, both endorsing Pedigree products, serve as excellent examples of how these modes of persuasion are strategically used.

The purpose of this essay is to inform the reader of a real problem, media misrepresentation, and to try to have the reader change the way the think, feel, and perceive the poor. She gives examples of encounters she has had that are a result of the damaging depiction and conveys to the reader why those thoughts are wrong by using her own personal experiences. She mentions that before entering college she never thought about social class. However, the comments from both other students and her professors about poverty were alarming to her. Other people viewed the poor as, “shiftless, mindless, lazy, dishonest, and unworthy” indigents. Hook opposes that stereotypical image of the poor, referring back to being taught in a “culture of poverty,” the values to be intelligent, honest, and hard-working. She uses these personal experiences to her advantage by showing she has had an inside look at poverty.

The United States has great amounts of traffic signals and symbols all over the road to make the driver more aware. In the U.K. accidents do occur but not that often has in the United States. In the Unites States every second there is huge amounts of accidents going on over the nation. John Staddon in his magazine article “Distracting Miss Daisy” tries to persuade that traffic control is making traffic more dangerous because we do not pay attention to the road, but to the signals.

Hooks addresses issues such as how the poor are viewed in the community, common assumptions about the poor, and how the poor are represented in the media. In her analysis, it is evident that those living in poverty are grossly misrepresented. This misrepresentation affects these people’s daily lives.

Cultural critic bell hooks is known throughout the academic community as an academic rebel, so it is only fitting that she would write about the sensitive subject of being poor. The term “poor” has become a dirty word which most people try to distance themselves from as much as possible. In fact, the second sentence in her essay “Seeing and Making Culture: Representing the Poor” paints a pretty clear picture about the word: “Most of us use words such as ‘underclass’ or ‘economically disenfranchised’ when we speak about being poor” (432). The purpose of this essay is to educate the reader about the reality of being impoverished and to break away from the negative stereotypes that they face. hooks accomplishes this through her use of pathos to give the reader a glimpse of what it was like for her to grow up poor; additionally, this glimpse creates ethos because she is sharing firsthand knowledge.

For my third writing project, I have decided to create a research proposal, directed at the USC Rossier School of Education in order to get them to accept my dissertation examining the gentrifying effects of neighborhood preference in charter school lottery systems. This proposal is effective because it employs rhetorical strategies appropriate for the target audience – in this case, a committee of professors that are knowledgeable about the subject of the proposed dissertation. These rhetorical strategies include the structure of the document, stylistic choices such as academic diction and tone, and the choices regarding the content of the proposal.

Larry Karson, of the University of Houston’s Department of criminal justice, wrote his article about how a Grand Jury gets put together in the state of Texas. He clearly explains the process of picking the members for the Grand and Petit Jury and compares these processes with each other. Like two of the other articles I have mentioned, this article also explains the historical background and how Grand juries first started. It goes into depth of how racial discrimination in the Texas juries plays a roll with the proper functioning of the juries and how this problem can be averted.
