Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a wondrous book with many different characters that have their own unique traits. One of the characters in this book is Cassie, who is a nine-year-old girl living in Mississippi during the Great Depression. The trait that best describes her is being courageous. The denotative definition of courageous is. “Not deterred by danger or pain; brave.”

To grow up and increase maturity one must go through rigorous trials of middle school, bad humor, and at least one emo phase that they regret soon after. But, people often grow up much faster through facing adversity in their lifetime. In the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, by Mildred Taylor, the Logan Family, and Cassie, Stacy, Christopher-John, and Little Man, face adversity in their everyday lives and learn because of it. Throughout the Novel Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry the use of figurative language and epiphany conveys that when people face formidable challenges they force themselves to grow up faster, whether they want to or not.

TJ gets himself in trouble with R.W. and Melvin Simms, two white brothers. The boys only want TJ around so they have someone to put the blame on and make fun of him. When TJ wants a very nice handgun at the Barnett Mercantile, the Simms brothers fool him into thinking that his dream is about to come true. RW and Melvin convinced TJ to try to steal the gun. They were caught in the act and the brothers punished TJ horribly. TJ tapped on the Logans door in the middle of the night. Stacey and Cassie answered the door. They knew they had to help him despite the negative acts against their family. “Stacey? I whispered afraid of what he might do. As far back as I could remember, Stacey had felt a responsibility for TJ I had never really understood why. Perhaps he felt that even a person as despicable as TJ needed someone he could call “friend”, or perhaps he sensed TJ’s vulnerability better than TJ did himself. Stacey, you ain’t goin’ are you?... You go on back to bed Cassie. I’ll be alright.” (pg. 249) This quote is a prime example of Stacey’s courage. Stacey knows that helping TJ could get him in trouble or even killed. Stacey is a true friend, and a brave one too.

Natasha has been feeling like Hayley and Jenny don’t want to be friends anymore, so she goes back to Becca. Together, Natasha and Becca try to find out how she got in the river. Later on, everyone was at play practice. Tasha wasn’t feeling good so she sat out. Becca’s best friend Hannah stepped in her place. When Tasha went to go move the overhead light, it came crashing down over Hannah. It killed her. Both the police and the girls had decided that Hayley and Jenny had led Tasha into the river and did something to the light for it to fall. The two girls were sent to prison and counseling for murder and attempted murder. After that, everything was going fine until Becca started to get a little suspicious. She asked the police if she could look over all the evidence again. She then came to the conclusion that Natasha had done all of it. She had thrown herself into the river and framed Hayley and Jenny, and she loosened the light so that it would fall. The police did not believe her. After more fighting Jas starts to choke her mother with a ribbon medallion she won when she was younger. After being hit back jas picks up the knife to stab her mother. After all the verbal and physical abuse the twins dragged her to the bathtub in the master's bedroom. During the interview with jas and tas they state that when they put her into the tub she was still alive. Jas said her mother's last word were “ I hate you. You're going to jail.” Jas told her mother she was sorry. After cleaning up the bloody mess the girl walked to school arriving two hours late. Students said that they act as if it was a normal day. The twins came home and they thought the police may have been there unfortunately they were not. Jas managed to flag down a officer passing through in her neighborhood. She told the officer that someone had killed her mother. She said her and her sister missed the bus but immetimatley start to walk to rockdale high school. They told officers that they made it to every class on time. The officer indicated that it seem as if she tried to put up a fight at the moment she was being killed but there was no sign of forced entry. Officers focus on the boyfriend as the prime suspect. After investigating they soon come to realize he had nothing to do with the murder. During interviews with the twin detective started to notice that they had many injuries bite mark, scratches, and more. Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry is set during the Great Depression, in the rural areas of Mississippi. The majority of the people in this community are sharecroppers, who are greatly dependent on plantation farming. The Logan family is fortunate because they have a piece of land of their own, so unlike other black sharecroppers they do not have to be dependent on the whites. However, due to the sharp decrease in the price of the cotton crop the family have to work hard to keep it in their hands, whilst also providing food in order for them to survive. During the climax of the book, the beating of the Averys, Stacey stayed behind to watch the violent scene while the Logan kids went safely back home to their parents. According to the text, “Stacey whispered “ you take Little Man and Christopher John and y’all-” (Taylor,253). Even though Stacey got cut off he was going to tell the kids to go home, and that he would stay there and keep watch of what was going on between the white and the blacks, which was extremely courageous. The text also says, “Papa spun around suddenly. “Gotta get him out of there,” he said, moving quicker than I had thought possible with his bad leg.” (Taylor,259). Well Stacey had to on time, they were just about to go to sleep and then Stacey looks out the window and sees the night men coming up there driveway and Stacey know that they are coming to get T.J because he is always in trouble for doing something like being friends with the sim boys (they are white kids that are kinda mischievous) and trying to steal and cheat (like i said in paragraph 2 line 4-7) he is just not a good kid but he knows better. Stacey's friendship with T.J is a weak bond that they hold. If something would come in between Stacey’s and TJ’s friendship it would surely break. The reason why Stacey lets TJ get away with somethings is because TJ is Stacey's best friend. Even though they may fight that doesn’t mean that they aren't friends any more.

First, Stacey Logan believes that friendship is very important, and if you are friends you do not get your friends in trouble on purpose. For example, when TJ lied and made it look like Stacey cheated on the test, Stacey did not snitch on TJ, instead he took the whipping and got into a lot of trouble. One day, T.J. brought notes to school to cheat on a test. T.J. handed the cheat sheet to Stacey when he did not want it. Stacey got caught and got blamed for the cheat sheets T.J. gave him. After school, Stacey was very very very mad. When school ended, Stacey stood up for himself and chased T.J. down to the Wallace store to beat him up.
