While it is true that both Protestantism and the Eastern Orthodox worship the same God, Roman Catholics differ by their own beliefs over certain matters. A person who follows Catholicism is called a “Roman Catholic” or simply a “Catholic”.

The Catholic Church is the oldest major religion in the Western world. Littered with peace, love, and humility, along with violence, turmoil, and controversy this institution has seen, heard, led, and had influence over the majority of everything and everybody that there was in the last two millennia. The actual induction of the Roman Catholic Church cannot be determined but it is known that elements have existed since the first century A.D. At this point many of the institutional structures of the church were not in place and were developed over time, primarily through various councils of religious leaders. The term “Roman Catholic” itself was not actually used until after the Protestant Reformation as a reaction to the schism in order to enhance the authority of Rome (Juergensmeyer, 2009). The Roman Catholic faith believes that at the moment of death the soul is separated from the body. At this point the soul is immediately judged. If found wicked they are immediately damned to hell. If the soul is truly pure it immediately goes to heaven and these souls are viewed as the saints. For the majority of souls they are believed to still have some ties to mortal sins and enter purgatory. This is seen as a blessing as the soul is aware it will one day be in heaven and purgatory will purge all sin from it in order to truly appreciate God. They believe that on Judgement day the bodies of the dead will be revived and filled with their souls and those found worthy will be brought both body and soul into heaven (Rosen, 2008). To be Catholic means to be whole, one with community, rich in spiritual tradition. Catholicism is a lens or filter which provides a meaningful pattern to our experiences which otherwise would be lacking in life and interest. There many Roman Catholics worldwide, who looks up to the Pope’s authority. The great question is, what is the foundation of the Papacy? The rise of the papacy came at a very important time in history, after the fall of Rome. In 380 CE, Emperor Theodosius I, made Nicene Christianity the state church of the Roman Empire. The world has more than one billion Catholics and with the ever growing population, it will only get larger in number. To be a Catholic means to have complete faith in God and his divine grace. Having God's divine grace means to obey it and keep it holy as it was created by God and given to his people. The religion itself is based on this and the people take it very seriously. Catholics believe that all people are of good nature but when one commits a sin it not only hurts that one person but the people and the Church.
