Friar Lawrence’s role in Romeo and Juliet Who is to blame for the deaths in the end of the play Romeo and Juliet? Friar Lawrence is a main character who definitely affects the storyline. Some people might believe that Romeo and Juliet are to blame, but I believe, ultimately, Friar Lawrence is to blame. Romeo could be to blame because he stupidly fell in love and made Friar Lawrence marry him and Juliet. Romeo’s careless actions brought devastation to the Capulet and Montague’s families.
Friar Lawrence is most likely the biggest to blame for these lovers’ deaths due to the fact that he has given the poison to Juliet which causes Romeo's death and then Juliet's. Friar Lawrence comes up with what seems like a phenomenal plan; fake a death, escape the city, and live happily ever after! Sadly, Friar Lawrence is making a fatal mistake; instead of simply telling Romeo of his and Juliet's plan, he plans on sending a letter through Friar John. To his surprise the letter does not go through! "After I found him, the healthy officers,/suspecting we were in a house infected by the plague,/boarded up the doors, and wouldn't let us out. So I couldn't go/ to Mantua"(5.2.6-9). As Friar John explains, he was suspected of having the plague and was not able to deliver the letter to Romeo. Although the letter seems like a liable idea, it is not nearly as reliable as simply informing Romeo of the actual situation. By simply speaking face to face with Romeo, Romeo will know the situation of Juliet and the poison and will not kill himself. Therefore, by giving Juliet poison and not informing Romeo, Friar Lawrence is to blame for Romeo and Juliet's
Friar Lawrence was to blame for Romeo and Juliet's death. The first reason that he was to blame is the fact that he give a 13 year old girl, who is unstable anyway, a poison to put her to sleep. In the book Friar says “When you are in bed, take his vile, a sleep induced drug will run through your veins, and your pulse will stop.” (lines 98-100) He is entrusting a 13 year old girl with a poison that can put her to sleep or worse. Also in the book Friar Lawrence says “Your body will be stiff and cold as a corpse.” (lines 282-284) He is explaining what this poison he is giving her is capable of. Friar lawrence also says “You will continue in this state for 42 hours then will awake s from a pleasant sleep.” (lines 108-110) This
Some believe that Friar Lawrence is the main blame for all the tragedies. They say Friar started it all when he married Romeo and Juliet and sold Juliet the potion and encouraged her irrational thoughts on how to avoid her marriage between Juliet and Paris. “These violent delights have violent ends and in their triumph die, like fire and power”(Shakespeare, 418). This exemplifies the fact that Friar was aware of the events that could follow if he were to marry Romeo and Juliet. However, Friars intent was not to kill six people throughout the tragedies, and his intent was not to encourage Juliet to make irrational decisions. As a Friar, he is simply trying to make peace between the two families. He wanted peace among Verona and he hoped that marrying a member of each family would help him succeed this
The reason that Friar is to blame is because he gave Juliet the drink to make her sleep which makes her family think she passed away. Which leads to Romeo committing suicide. If Friar Lawrence would not have given Juliet the drink maybe the marriage situation could have been avoided in a different way. ("DBQ: Romeo and Juliet: Who's to Blame". Doc. E)

To begin with, Friar Lawrence is a person to blame because he didn’t communicate wit nobody. He kept everything to himself like a little secret. He was actually was supposed to tell Romeo about juliet taking the sleeping potion instead he made romeo believe that she was dead. “ I will hence tonight” (V.i.9). Friar Lawrence had a major part of the couple deaths. Not because he didn't tell anyone it is because if he would’ve communicated the couple would still be living there happy lives.
Friar Laurence is also to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths because of the way he lied to everyone about Juliet’s death and the potion. The Friar purposely told Juliet to lie to her parents and Paris about her willingness to marry Paris, he lied to everyone when Juliet was ‘dead’, and he encouraged Juliet to take the potion, and not allow anyone in, lying to them. It was the Friar’s fault because he purposely told Juliet about the plan, and told her not to let anyone else know, “Hold, daughter, I do spy a kind of hope” (IV.1. 70 91-92). The Friar should have told the truth and said Juliet was already married instead of devising a plan. Once the family discovered Juliet was dead, the Friar, rather than ending
Additionally and perhaps most notably, third, Friar Lawrence is at fault for both deaths because he realized the letter couldn't be sent at the wrong time. He is responsible because his job was to get the letter sent to Romeo that read Juliet would be in the tomb undead but before he got there, he was informed she was in the tomb and he was under the impression that she was dead to which he prepared to kill himself. He then went to the tomb with his poison and took it because he could live without Juliet.
