“From the day them men are born to up to 5 years old, they live at the Home of Infants where the kids are put in a cellar. When at 5 years old, the children are sent to the Home of then Students where they stay there for 10 years and learn about the history, lifestyle and symbolism of the city and continue to learn at age 15 (Rand 20-21),” this shows that the lifestyle of the people is being controlled and that they don’t live their separate lives individually and they can’t have their own lives set for themselves. At the Home of the Students, they say an anthem which says, “We are nothing. Mankind is all. By the grace of our brothers are we allowed our lives. We exist through, by and for our brothers who are the State. Amen”, this is wrong because each person is something and that mankind is not all. It is true that exist for our brothers but we also exist for other reasons like existing for purpose in life and for our home and friends (Rand 21). This explains that the government has too many rule and controls due as said earlier, the lifestyle of men is being controlled, the people are saying an anthem which Equality knows is wrong and the people of Anthem can’t talk of a certain past or beyond

When he tries to show his city they punished him and he ran away with The “Golden One” and found a home which they wished to start a new life, but Equality found out to understand the word ” I” and finds out the truth behind the “Utopia” he lived in for all his life. Anyone who is different gets punished. The City has so many rules and controls because they are there to keep the people unaware of the truth, to keep people down a certain path and to keep their “Utopia” a great place and Equality would have many rules and controls.
Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is a very unique novel. It encircles individualism and makes the reader think of how people can conform to society and do as they are told without knowing the consequences and results of their decisions. Also, it teaches the importance of self expression and the freedom that comes along with being your own person and having the power to choose what path to take in life. Figurative language is used often in this book and in a variety of quotes that have great importance to the theme, plot, and conflict of the novel.
Ceaseless collectivism is not something that can be forced upon a community. Ayn Rand’s novel Anthem conveys this through the writings of Equality 7-2125, a man willing to stand up to the collectivism of the society he is confined to. Anthem not only shows how dull and lifeless a society can be with a lack of individuality in its people, but also reveals how one person can significantly impact a community. This novel displays the importance of individualism through Equality’s thoughts and actions. This includes when he reinvents electricity in the tunnel, falls in love with Liberty, and when he completely separates himself from society.
In conclusion, in Anthem by Ayn Rand, Equality’s new society will have none of the rules of the old society. The rules were put in place to shun differences and keep everyone equal. Because Equality hated the old society, he encourages differences, and he was an outcast in the old society, he will not allow any of the rules to carry over into his new
Imagine living in a society where you have no control over your own life. In the book Anthem written by Ayn Rand, the characters are told how to live by the government. They have no control over their life, and they must follow the laws and rules. If any person breaks these laws and rules, they will be punished severely. There are no exceptions, no warnings, one strike and they’re done. In Anthem the government has enforced many rules. A few of the rules may include the “we” law, the “no affection” law and another law is how one must never write or talk about the Unmentionable Times. The government allows no human to live an uncontrolled life and they deserve to live their own lives.
“The word "We" is as lime poured over men, which sets and hardens to stone, and crushes all beneath it, and that which is white and that which is black are lost equally in the grey of it. It is the word by which the depraved steal the virtue of the good, by which the weak steal the might of the strong, by which the fools steal the wisdom of the sages” (Rand 66). Anthem is a science fiction book written by Ayn Rand. This book takes place in a futuristic time in which freedom and individual rights have been demolished and substituted by collectivism. The situation in Anthem is closely related to how Ayn Rand lived through the early years of the Soviet Union’s rise to power. The people of Russia were expected to everything for the state, and were expected to put their needs and wants on the back burner with no if ands or buts about it, and this is very much what was going on in Anthem.
•Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted in this society. Equality must think about “the will of all men together” and how they are all supposed to be “one in all and all in one”. No one may think of or for themselves and everyone decision is made by the grace of every brother.
“Anthem” was written by Ayn Rand, and she was born on February 2, 1905 in Russia. Russia at the time was heavily focused on collectivism, which is the idea that people should prioritize the good of society over the welfare of the individual, and was highly influential on Rand’s life. When she was introduced to American history, her ideas of what a free nation should be was America. When she left Russia, she decided to never go back to Russia and 13 years later, wrote Anthem. Anthem is set in the future and is based in a city that has collapsed from modern day society and accepts collectivism. “Anthem” is a novella about a man named Equality 7-2521 and throughout his life, he struggles to find self-identification in a society that has no sense of individualism. Throughout the story of “Anthem” the main themes are the importance of the individual and the value of martyrdom. Ayn Rand wrote “Anthem” as a warning to us westerners about the horrors of collectivism regardless of how it was put in use. She experienced most of the horrors first hand and this was also another reason for writing “Anthem”. Some of the horrors of what she experienced was the Kerensky Revolution and the Bolshevik Revolution which ended in her father’s pharmacy being confiscated and leading to periods of near-starvation. So, based on Rand’s past experiences and her ideas, she wrote “Anthem”.
An enslaved future in which people in a society are punished for wanting independence. This is the dark future Ayn Rand, author of Anthem, has set in this heart-wrenching dystopia. Ayn Rand sets the protagonist, Equality 7-2521, against his society to find the meaning of individuality and the sacred word “I”. Modern Day U.S society is much more progressive that Anthems’ society because of its’ individuality, education, and technology.
“My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end. It is its own goal. It is its own purpose” (Rand, 95). Anthem is written by American author Ayn Rand about Equality 7-2521 on his quest for happiness. The novel is set in an unspecified time and place in the future. Years after human civilization has gone through a deconstruction in which all knowledge was lost and a new society established with no concept of the individual. “The novel describes the efforts of the main character, Equality 7-2521, to reestablish a sense of personal identity and restore the knowledge of the past by objective scientific inquiry. In doing so, he must face many dangers and privations” (Anthem). Anthem is a dairy of the Equality
In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand the social classes are portrayed in a way that is very different from the way social classes are viewed today. The way the power is divided in the social classes is not very different from the way it is in our society. The government has exaggerated control in the novel, but as well in our society. Although the government’s control obviously differs from the novel to our society, in the novel the control has total control from what your name is to what you will do as an occupation. In this Dystopia the government’s reach is extensive, the fact that they chose these things for their citizens almost makes it feel like anarchy.
“Anthem” is an engrossing novel by Ayn Rand focusing on the character Equality 7-2521’s descent into rebellion against the new socialistic government that has taken all previous scientific advancement out of life, only to leave the ideology of collectivism. His quest to discover, learn, and invent is problematic to those that oversee the progress of the civilization, and from roughly around the age of five, he is punished for his nature. Soon enough, the twenty-one year old is on a journey to learn, not only about nature’s mysteries, but also about what sets him apart from his dead-eyed peers. Equality 7-2521 has many distinctive characteristics that others in the restricted city do not, some of which are relatable, and others that are indeed unique.
Is dystopian fiction, unremittingly bleak, leaving no room for hope, or is it a positive warning to persuade us to speculate about the world that mankind has created.

A dystopian world is “a futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, moral, or totalitarian control” (ReadWriteThink). The opposite of Utopia which is “a place, state, or condition that is ideally perfect in respect of politics, laws, customs, and conditions” (ReadWriteThink). In the world of “Anthem” the main character who had no name was called Equality 7-2521. Equality meets Liberty 5-3000 a girl from the Home of the Peasant. Equality 7-2521 came from the Home of The Street Sweepers in which each person was assigned a home such as the Home of the Scholars and so forth. However, he finds out that all his life in the city was not what life was about. Equality finds out that his life is meant to be free.
