I am Tori Kersey, a high school senior seeking to combine my passion of art with my heart for children to become an art therapist and social worker for children in Honduras. This dream started in September of 2006 when my family made the decision to start the process of adopting a young boy from Honduras. In that very same month 1,528 miles away, my highly energetic brother came into the world an orphan in the poverty stricken Central American country of Honduras. After seven years of being a test family for a closed to adoption country, we finally brought my brother Gustavo home. Not only were these years filled with paperwork, long meetings, and fundraisers, but also with six weeks of traveling for my parents to visit the young boy. Those …show more content…
Beyond discovering my direction for my life through the adoption of my brother, I found the country where I want to live out my mission. This summer I will have the opportunity of visiting my hopefully future home for the fourth time to help those with physical and spiritual needs, continue to build friendships with the Hondurans, and teach art to school-aged children. Another passion in my life is art, which has always been a place of refuge, an area of comfort, a way to relax, and an outlet to express myself. One day I want to provide this same satisfaction and healing to others. As a daughter of a graphic designer and sister to an artist, I have always been immersed in the world of creativity and art, which has helped build my love and passion for it. Not only do I desire to use art to help children overcome traumatic experiences or difficulties, but also as a means to see the beautiful creativity of God. To fulfill this dream of teaching children self-expression through art I must earn not only a college degree, but also my masters in art therapy. For my undergraduate I am planning on attending Union University in Jackson Tennessee to not only earn my degree in Art Therapy, but also to grow as a person so I can better humbly serve others. I am actively trying to achieve higher education in order to help others in
My faith has allowed me to believe that miracles happen to good people despite other’s doubts; therefore, I believe if I try my best, I can succeed. To showcase my skills and potential, I yearn to sell my art in markets, take pictures at various events, and create customized accessories and commissioned pieces. In addition, I plan to contribute to community mural paintings, and collaborative pieces. Above all, I will be striving to display my work in galleries. Through my work, I yearn to educate and raise awareness to all I am passionate about. I hope to impact the world in some
Everybody needs a family, even older children in foster care waiting for adoption. Teenagers are less likely than young children to get fostered or adopted, because everyone wants the perfect young child. More people should foster and adopt older children and teenagers, because it positively impacts the lives of the youth, family, and society. Children in foster care go through harsh things in life and need the love and support from a foster or adoptive parent. Not only does fostering or adopting older children change their lives but it also impacts the lives of the people parenting them. Society is positively impacted by teenagers being fostered or adopted.

These thoughts that pertained to Mariam reminded me of what I hear children say when they have to switch foster homes every few months. This connection developed because I met a few foster kids two years ago, and they told me of how they felt about being in foster homes. The little kids would say how moving to a new house was like an adventure because they were always discovering new things. However, they wished they could stay in one home for a really long time because wanted to have a mommy and daddy for once. Whereas, the teens would inform me that having hope and love while being in the foster system can cause more harm than good. Hope and love would cause them to believe that they finally found some foster parents that actually cared for
In fact, art has always been an inseparable part of my life. My journey with art started when I was still in Iran and my mother enlisted me in my first extracurricular art class. After moving to Beijing, the capital of China, I became fascinated with Chinese painting that is very different from western paintings in both mediums and techniques. Thus, I signed up for one-to-one classes for Chinese Gongbi and Shui-mo painting. When my journey brought me to the United States, I took advantage of the flexible high school curriculum that I previously did not have and enrolled in a variety of Art classes. I was able to make my own short animation, explore different mediums such as watercolor, acrylic, and clay, learn to develop in the dark room what I photographed with my film camera, and create works of art such as sculptures and paintings, all of which have been displayed at my schools galleries. After my virtual tour of Jewett Arts Center, I fancied of walking down the halls and be inspired by the great variety of artworks. The art center resonates the promise that I can further explore my artistic abilities and perhaps step out of my comfort zone and lead a new adventure with oil
Since I was a little girl art has been a part of my life, whether it has been painting my favorite celebrity, knitting a blanket, or drawing Time Square. I’ve always found joy when creating something others will admire. With my love of art came a decision every teenager has to make,“ what will you do for the rest of your life”. With lots of questioning and deliberation, I made the conclusion to further my passion into a career by going to art school in Chicago.
I graduated from Hilliard Darby High School this past spring. My love for art began very young with my father who always made sure to encourage my creativity. I remember making coil pots with him during the summer and then painting them. In the ninth grade I took painting which I immediately became attached too. For the past four years I have continued to expand my abilities and strengthen skills with the help of my teacher Mrs. Kulick-Brown. From there I have completed several commissioned pieces for teachers and their families. Painting has taught me a lot about color and composition. During high school I also was involved in ceramics where I competed in the annual ‘Feats of Clay” competition. I love the focus and serenity I experience
I know what you are wondering. who is this person or thing that is talking to you? well I am a cat named gorge and soon it is adoption day and my life is about to change but for now, it is super nice and I get to do whatever I want before adoption day. Open adoption allows birth parents to stay in touch with their child. Birth parents are able to build relationship with the child. They have also given a chance to ease the adoption process and to allow the child a smooth transition to the adoption. They are available to resolve unresolved conflicts and answer puzzled questions.
When I was a little kid, I got adopted. Getting adopted changed many things in my life. It changed who my parents were, who was my whole family is now, and where I lived. Being adopted was the main thing that changed my life.
All three corners of the adoption triad are affected I many ways. Birth mothers are the first to be psychologically traumatized by the adoption. For the adoptees that are a part of the closed era, many of the birth mothers were young, unwed and forced to give her baby up for adoption. No other options were suggested along with no counseling on how to deal with the loss of her child, left a trauma that was not easily forgotten. Some were sent to maternity homes to hide the shame from the rest of the family and the public. The child was to be a very close kept secret mistake to be undone. While giving birth, they were shielded from seeing their child, some not even knowing if they gave birth to a boy
Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.” During my past career as an art teacher at Intel Academy, introducing and demonstrating aesthetic techniques and materials have thrilled me as much as completing an art piece. Through workshops and demonstrations, I learned how to communicate and suggest better ways of developing their ideas and expressions. Some children had difficulties encountering art due to their behavioral problems; however, respecting their accomplishments and encouraging their process of following the curriculum became a part of the solution. My decision to apply to masters program in art education was pursued as I faced these
My sister Katie feels like she “doesn’t belong” with my family. As kids, we used to play dress up with one another and Katie would always ask my mom to make her have blonde hair just as I did. My mom would then put a yellow towel on her head so that she could pretend she did. As a child I could not understand why Katie would want to do such a silly thing to try and look as I did. In my eyes we were both the same and nothing else mattered. As we got older, it became more apparent to me how different we really were. I am Caucasian and she is Native American. I have blonde hair and blue eyes while she has black hair and brown eyes. Not only did we look very different but our personalities differed as well. Katie was always much more fussy
In the last four decades, the concept of the American family has undergone a radical transformation, reflecting society¡¯s growing openness. Among all segments of society, there is a greater acceptance of a variety of family structures ¨C from single parenting to blended families to same sex parenting of children. The introduction of openness into the process of adoption offers new opportunities for children in need of a parent or parents and prospective parents wishing to create or expand their families. Meeting the requirements to become eligible to adopt no longer means being constrained by the conventions of an earlier generation.
A vision I’ve always had of myself years ahead of now is a wealthy business woman that owns an art academy, and is a world-wide well known artist. I will have graduated from a bachelor in fine arts from college, as well as a master in painting and business administration. My institution will give art education to people
