My life was driven around the social trends without thinking of what I really wanted. Ever since I was in middle school, I would tell everyone that I was going to become a dentist. That was my career plan until the summer of my junior year. During that summer, I had the opportunity to do an internship and job shadow Dr. Bradshaw at his private dental office. While observing and talking to the doctor, I realized that I would not enjoy working as a dentist. I still wanted to pursue a career in the dental field so I decided to job shadow the dental hygienists. Watching the dental hygienists perform their duties and interact with patients made me want to pursue a career in dental hygiene. I knew very little about dental hygienists besides the fact that they clean teeth. As I spent time with the dental hygienists, I learned more each day. I want to attend Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in the dental hygiene major because I want to change the way people view their own personal set teeth. My personal fascination of the bone structure started when I lost my first tooth and the only person there to calm me down was my aunt Deena who was a budding dental hygienist at the time. After she made me clean my slightly bloody mouth, I remember her sitting me down and showing me a tiny white object that was wrapped up in tissue paper. Imagine me frowning at the fallen tooth; I wasn’t quite happy with it because I felt like it had abandoned me. When I expressed this thought to my aunt, she only smiled and let me hold the tooth. At that moment, I think I became enchanted with it and vowed to gain as much knowledge as I can about the tooth and how to care for the rest that rested in my mouth.

My choice in careers seems now: to go from managing a tooth-decaying candy store to dreaming of cleaning teeth, would be a large leap on my effect of the tooth-health-spectrum. As a dental hygienist, it will be my job to clean people’s teeth, examine them for any type of oral disease, and to educate others on proper dental hygiene. To perform my job properly, it will be important to have high communication skills, a general knowledge of anatomy and diseases, and to have a close attention to detail.

My love for orthodontics has developed at a young age when my confidence has shined after finishing my treatment. The happiness I experienced at that moment is a feeling that I would love to share with my patients every day. The anthropology of orthodontics has also been a very fascinating topic to me. Coming from an Egyptian background has increased my interest in learning how the evolution of teeth has changed across different ethnicities throughout centuries. My fascination for the specialty has grown when I shadowed orthodontists and noticed that cases are presented in a way where teeth need to be puzzled together to create a beautiful smile. Also, expressing a personality that loves to connect with people and their families makes orthodontics a very enjoyable field. Orthodontic patients are usually excited about coming in and moving forward with their treatment, this leads to having a friendly environment where everyone works together to provide the highest quality of care to the patients. I was accustomed to viewing the dental office from a patient’s perspective; however, this has changed after enrolling in a dental assistant course. The course intrigued my interest though the hands on learning, along with the opportunity for direct patient care. Although the course has prepared me to become a dental assistant, it has also introduced me the various dental health occupations. Ultimately, inspiring me to expand my career in dental health and pursue an education in dental hygiene.

Dental hygiene plays an important role in oneś life, from infanthood to elderhood oral health is a visual into healthy bodies. Throughout one’s life annual dentist visits are a need to keep a mouth fresh and disease free. Looking back into my own childhood and the first visit, I was happy to be there. In fact, I found this new adventure in the dentist office better than being in a doctor's. Being a small child and coming into the office for a check up, the first face I saw was a dental hygienist. That meeting later motivated me to do all my studying to become one myself.

Through this experience, I learned how to remain emotionally confident while performing procedures, handling different clinical situations in a timely manner, accepting feedback, and making positive changes in myself. In preparing for a dental program, I have taken certification courses like Introduction to Dental Medicine and Pre-dental Clinical Simulation Course and Caries Management by Risk Assessment. I have also had the opportunity to practice class I amalgam and composite restoration, detecting inter-proximal caries on x-rays, and tried dental high-speed instruments. Currently, I am learning intra-oral radiographic techniques. Another way I have enriched my background is by volunteering with America’s Tooth Fairy Smile Drive and visiting elementary schools around San Francisco to teach about dental risk factors and preventions. My interest in dentistry has grown immensely since I’ve started working at a dental office that deals with many patients who may have never had proper oral care or they smoke and chew tobacco along with many other bad habits. The lack of oral hygiene has raised many problems, problems that could have been prevented with just a couple check-ups a year, such as tooth decay, gum recession, bad breath, heart failure, high blood pressure. Deciding to go to school to become a dental hygienist has made me become even more interested and more excited to learn as well as teach other individuals the importance of a healthy mouth. At Michigan State University, I plan on joining the Pre-Dental Club. With past experience as a Dental Assistant, I look forward to providing students an in depth view of what it is really like working at a dentist office. Most importantly, the types of relationships that dentists should look to build with their assistant and hygienist. I intend on furthering the education of my fellow peers beyond their prior knowledge and hope to enrich the club while achieving a goal of fulfilment for Michigan State’s community. These experiences further convinced me that dentistry is the profession that correctly combines my mechanical aptitude with my desire for interpersonal interaction. Observing each dentist, I concluded that a common thread of skills united them all, regardless of their speciality: each dentist worked well on a team, exercised strong leadership skills and possessed the ability to communicate clearly and precisely.

‘Randi, why would you want to look into someone’s mouth?’ is a question I frequently am asked when I tell someone of my future aspiration of becoming a dentist. Every time I am asked this question I cannot help myself but to chuckle a little because to me becoming a dentist is so much more; to me being a dentist is about becoming a contributing member of the community as well as an advocate of compassion, mentorship, and social justice. Becoming a dentist will allow me to utilize my creative and academic abilities while servicing others. I am fortunate to have the ability to understand complex concepts, ideas, and theories and can simplify them for others, so they may gain their own basic understanding. On the other hand, I am motivated to give thanks for this ability and to offer my service as a dental professional to assist in the health needs of those served and underserved in my community.

Through my research, I have gathered essential information regarding the education and training required to achieve a degree as a general dentist as well as the different specialties in the field.
