School Uniforms Essay

As the years pass, many students have been bullied, a bully, or they just hate school and this was affecting their lives academically. School boards tried to find a way to improve the way students feel about themselves and about school, and they came up with the idea of school uniforms. School uniforms have been associated with just the Catholic school, but are now showing up in public schools across the country. According to the National Center for Education Statistics: Indicators of School Crime and Safety, 2011, twenty-one states require students to wear uniforms in the public school system (Pros and Cons of School Uniforms Statistics). This has seemed to work tremendously in the school system. In education, school uniforms assist with student success, academically, socially, and personally.

School uniforms can benefit low income areas, places where crimes are high, and even to help the image of the school. I?m not saying with school uniforms that there will be no bullying or no crimes what I am saying is that school uniforms eliminate some of the issues. You can believe me because I have done a lot of research and checked myself with multiple different websites. I will first tell you the need for these uniforms. Then I will propose a solution, and last I will tell this affects you and maybe your future kids.

School uniforms would decrease violence in many public schools because they would reduce the amount of theft that may occur, the amount of bullying that occurs on a daily basis, and the amount of attempted or successful murders that occur. Uniforms would reduce the amount of theft that occurs because every student would be wearing the same clothing. If every student is wearing the same article of clothing, students would not be tempted to steal clothing, shoes, or jewelry from one another. Uniforms would also make every student feel a sense of equality.

Furthermore, school uniforms have the potential to make schools a whole lot safer. Think of it like this – if you were to see a student walk in wearing an ugly polo shirt and sweat pants, (s)he would probably be picked on just because of what (s)he is wearing. We as humans naturally judge on what we see first, and it’s usually their face / clothing. If school uniforms were implemented in many places, then it would eradicate school violence and students wouldn’t be indignant with each other based on what they wear. Also, since everyone on school grounds is wearing their uniform, it would be easy to pinpoint unwanted visitors and be one step ahead. Not to mention it would help kids with less money evade the bullying and teasing that they would usually receive, which brings me to my next point.

Well studies show children with uniforms are more likely to affect the way they act in school with their behavior and their attendance. Academics are a whole other subject, uniforms are not proven to help grades climb, but it is proven to help behavior and pride in their school in which they attend. School pride is almost as important as schools academies.

Having school uniforms greatly decrease one’s way to get bullied. “Perhaps most importantly, a uniform means students don't have to worry about peer pressure when it comes to their clothes. When everyone is dressed the same, worrying about what you look like isn't so important. There is no competition about being dressed in the latest trend, which would put a great deal of financial pressure on students and parents. Potential bullies have one less target for their insults; it's hard to make fun of what someone is wearing when you're dressed exactly the same...” (Should Students Have to Wear School Uniforms?). With the same as gang violence, having uniforms does not get rid of bullying altogether. With my experiences in both non-uniform and uniform enforced schools, I saw far less bullying in schools with uniforms. Another benefit of uniforms is that they make the school is safer. In recent events there has been school shootings. Keeping weapons out of school is a huge safety concern. One positive effect of school uniforms is that it can prevent school shootings. To increase school safety, school uniforms identify who belongs on campus and who doesn’t as well as preventing gang “colors” from corrupting schools. Some people might think it focuses on the idea that requiring a uniform violates children's individual rights. Groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union have voiced concerns about the cost of uniforms, specifically that some disadvantaged parents are unable to afford them. It’s better to have an enhanced learning environment, without bullying and

school uniforms are not a good idea because they can increase bullies, they are financial burdens that give nothing in return, and they are bad for student’s morale.

Schools, parents and students have debated over school uniforms since the past decade. School uniforms can make the school better in many ways. It can improve graduation and attendance rates. Lessen gang violence and economic differences between the students. School uniforms can even improve students discipline and behavior for the better. It can also show a great sense of school spirit.

Second, school uniforms will increase student’s academic success significantly. With school uniforms, it is guaranteed that they will not be a distraction to students. In schools where no uniforms are implemented, students may focus a considerably large amount on what other students are wearing, instead of focusing on the learning. I now attend a public university, where students are free to wear and look however they please. I tend to notice what certain students are wearing when

School uniforms are increasingly popular across the nation. In fact, it becomes a huge controversial argument of communities rejecting these mandated school uniforms in their schools. Forcing students to wear uniforms lead to more problems and misbehavior instead of encouraging discipline. Students could get into trouble if they did not wear their uniforms correctly. For example, in 2009, a group of students at John A. Ferguson Senior High School rebelled against their school uniforms. Instead of following their school uniform requirements, the students wore what they thought would be a better school uniform to school. Not only uniforms don’t earn schools the respect from its students, but it may also lead to more problems.
