Semi-Barbaric King

The princess began to weep, for her lover was to die or to marry a woman she despised. She flew up and out of her seat, and she ran as fast as her feet could take her; she could not bear to see her lover’s fate. She knew the fair maiden was behind the door he was to open, and she wanted so badly to be standing in her place. She must find a way to meet him as he opened the door.

Throughout history, love and jealousy have been regarded as the two most powerful emotions that have played a huge role in a person’s fate or destiny. This is very true in Frank Stockton’s short story “The Lady or the Tiger?’’ Stockton’s princess character had vital information which led to her lover’s fate, however his reader was left hanging leaving one important question unanswered- what was his fate? Jealousy conquered love and was the strongest emotion which won out between the two. This led to the tiger coming out from behind the door, based on the princess’ semi barbaric nature.

In the story “The Lady or The Tiger” a princess is forced to watch her lover choose his destiny. The king is described as semi-barbaric because he shows compassion towards the accused. He allows them to choose their own fate by letting them pick a door, one with a hungry tiger and the other which contains a beautiful woman who he would marry on the spot. The man in the story finds himself in this situation after the king discovered he was having a love affair with his daughter. At the end of the story the princess is torn and she cannot decide if she should guide the man to life or watch him die.

"The Lady, or the Tiger?" is a short story by Frank R. Stockton that takes place in a land ruled by a semi-barbaric king who rules sternly, and has a creative punishment for criminals that were brought to his attention. They are led to an arena where there are two doors; the accused must choose one. Behind one door, there is a tiger, who will maul the accused to death. Behind the other door, there is a fair maiden, chosen by the king himself. If the criminal selects this door, then the pair will be instantly married. The story kicks in when the king's (almost as barbaric) daughter is caught having an affair with one of the king's courtiers. As expected, the courtier is sent to the arena, but the princess has found out which door will contain which punishment. However, the fair maiden behind one of the doors is someone the princess hates. The princess gestures towards the right door and the story ends on a cliff hanger. Despite the ending, it can be inferred that the princess sent the courtier to the tiger.

Did the princess indicate the door that concealed the lady or the tiger? If she chose the lady, will she be able to withstand and bear the suffering every time she sees her lover and the lady together? Will she be able to bear the pain of losing her beloved to a lady she hated as she had pictured how lovely the both of them would be?
