Throughout history, women have continuously found themselves as the subjects of oppression. Although the treatment of women has drastically changed over time, women are still exposed to much of the violence that exists today. Per the National Organization for Women, “young women, low-income women and some minorities are disproportionately victims of domestic violence and rape” (National Organization for Women, 2016). Women-centered violence is highly prevalent and reoccurring all over the world, even in our local communities. Individuals may be hesitant to consider just how much violence against women affects their communities.

Individuals involved in this trade can be trafficked for sexual and/or labor reasons. The extent to which human trafficking exists in North Carolina is not completely known. Because many individuals involved in human trafficking are illegal immigrants, it is difficult to record an accurate count of the individuals affected by this illegal practice. Despite these difficulties, the National Human Trafficking Resource Center has been able to put together approximate statistics for human trafficking in North Carolina. Since 2012, there have been at least 80 cases of human trafficking reported in North Carolina each year, with the highest total number of cases being reported in 2014 (118 cases). Of those 118 cases, 86 (72.9%) were specific to sex trafficking, 19 (16.1%) were for labor trafficking, 6 (5.1%) were for both labor and sex trafficking and 7 (5.9%) were for unknown reasons (National Human Trafficking Resource Center, …show more content…
The North Carolina Coalition Against Human Trafficking (NCCAHT) was established in 2004 as a result of a collaboration between the NC Attorney General's Office and the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault, along with several other organizations. The goal of this coalition is to “work to raise awareness about Human Trafficking across North Carolina, to support efforts to prosecute traffickers, and to identify and assist victims” (North Carolina Coalition Against Human Trafficking,
This journal article examines the issue of minor sex trafficking in the U.S and provides the reader with the results of the research that was conducted on the matter at hand. I analyzed human trafficking in two different locations of the United States, one being California, and another being Florida. My main reason for choosing the two was because both states have been actively participating in working on helping the police, and prosecutors identify and prosecute trafficking. In California local police have been able to “identify 1,277 victims, initiated 2,552 investigations, and arrested 1,798 individuals” in regards to human trafficking cases (California Justice Department). In California we have our own legal definition to help us identify trafficking through the passing of AB 22 in 2005. California defines human trafficking as “all acts involved in the recruitment, abduction, transport, harboring, transfer, sale or receipt of persons, within national or across international borders, through force, coercion, fraud or deception, to place persons in situations of slavery or slavery-like conditions, forced labor or services, such as prostitution or sexual services,
This number is likely even higher due to the fact that many trafficking victims go unnoticed. Furthermore, the NHTH stated that most of North Carolinas Trafficking victims are used for labor. North Carolina sits in between two major HT hubs, Washington DC and Atlanta Georgia. To further exacerbate the situation I-85 and 95 run from several other states directly into NC which allows traffickers to smoothly move victims in and out of the state quickly and easily. In addition to the interstate bringing in trafficking victims, the coastline is also vulnerable. The ports along the coastline allow for easy unrestricted access into North Carolina. Also, North Carolina has an international airport which makes international sex tourism
The impact of human trafficking can be felt all throughout the United States in all 50 state including Washington, D.C. There is no identifiable pattern for human trafficking victims; the victims can be adult and minor from rural, suburban, or urban communities. According to the national human trafficking resource center (NHTRC) the most vulnerable victim of these human trafficking rings are usually runaway and homeless youth. Even individuals who experienced violence and trauma in the past are more susceptible to being primed into human trafficking. Since human trafficking is so diverse the impact is felt across the board and the manipulation of adults and minors no matter their socio-economic background or education they are still being
The goal of enforcing a human trafficking task force in Philadelphia is to increase awareness, understanding how to identify human trafficking victims, and provide support and services. The Philadelphia Police Department and the City of Philadelphia Department of Human Services work in various sceneries and come into contact with numerous individuals within the community, they have a distinctive exposure to exploited, oppressed and abused individuals. This intensifies the possibility of coming into contact with a trafficked individual.
Sex trafficking keeps becoming a bigger issue in modern times. More victims are being taken, mainly women and children. In order to be able to help those in sex trafficking we need to help people become aware of the dangerous acts that they create and or cause to a person. Since “Sex trafficking is a fast-growing criminal enterprise. In response, some states are looking for help in combating the trafficking where it’s likely to occur.” (“Sex Trafficking Law Enforcement Task Force Highlighted During National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month”) By giving those in your community the opportunity to help you around your community is something that can definitely change the way things are done. When you're in a community, you are familiar
According to CNN news in Atlanta alone some traffickers make up to 32,000 a week. These girls are not even 14 when they are sold. In one case a girl went with her “friend” to hang out and her friend introduced her to a man that would soon be selling her for sex. She was not aware of was going on but soon figured out she was being sold for sex. She told him that she could not do this anymore and he responded by holding a gun to her head and told her if she would try and leave he would kill her (Sex Trafficking).
Human trafficking is where humans are taking against their will and forced to participate in tasks that are demoralizing and are in horrible conditions that pose sexual and mental health risks. Thus, making human trafficking modern day slavery because individuals are forced into labor where they don’t get monetary compensation and are unable to leave their atrocious circumstances. Human trafficking can affect both genders; however, women and children are used for domestic servitude and in the sex trade, whereas, men and boys are used for more laborious positions. Human trafficking is not just a United States problem it is a global problem as well. Human trafficking is a major problem here in Florida, because Florida is the third highest state for human trafficking. Humans are being trafficked within countries and across international borders, and human trafficking happens in our own neighborhoods
According to dosomething.org, there are approximately twenty to thirty million people that are stuck in human trafficking. In addition, according to the United Nations, there is about 32 billion dollars in human trafficking. Also in the United States, according to the Human Trafficking Center, there is a net worth of 2.5 billion dollars by sexual exploitation or forced labor. Human trafficking is stated to be one of the fastest growing crimes in the US and it hits home. Charlotte being a fast and upcoming city is one of the top ten cities for human trafficking. The sex slave industry is the biggest ever, currently. With it being so bad in Charlotte, that Charlotte Mecklenburg schools are addressing this issue to seventh and eighth grade students. What is sad is that it’s not women, its young girls and teenagers that are being sold for
The local and state law enforcement agencies are identified as the epicenter for contacting, identifying, and rescuing sex trafficking victims. Due to this, the biggest problem with recognizing and saving victims comes from the deficiency of local level resources and plans to diminish sex human trafficking. During 2007 and 2008, the Department of Justice recorded that the law enforcement officials arrested sixty-eight percent of trafficking offenders. The law enforcement’s main issue that prevents them from identifying and freeing victims is a lack of partnership with nongovernmental service providers, law enforcement agencies, and health care providers. The partnership can help better them identifying victims and persecuting the trafficker (Helton 449). Not having the partnership and not having laws in all states is the government’s down
Public problems come in all shapes and sizes. A public problem can be as minor as pot holes in the street to as major as human trafficking and everything in between. In what is known as modern slavery, the domestic problem of child sex trafficking in the United States affects 100,000 American children every year. (Tichen, 2014) The problem of child sex trafficking is something that I am very interested in helping to tackle. Recently I had the opportunity to speak with a representative from a local shelter that assists children that have been removed from a sex trafficking situation. This conversation was very eye opening and made me realize how truly huge this problem is. The funding for local non-profit organizations is not optimal and
A case study on human trafficking in St. Louis and the Bi-State area was done by Erin C. Heil and Andrea J. Nichols. The study focused on how prominent human trafficking is in the Midwest. Covering topics such as labor trafficking, sex trafficking, policing human trafficking, community response and social services, I will discuss survivor stories and my conclusions on how anti-trafficking organizations can use this valuable information.
The standard way of thinking about human trafficking has been that it is a problem of undeveloped countries. Lamentably, human trafficking it is an alarming issue in our nation, states, and cities. The National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC) acknowledges that last year (2014) 21,431 phone calls, 1149 emails, and 1482 online tips were made to report human trafficking in The United States. The same report presents that Washington is listed in the top 15 for human trafficking cases reported by state for 2014. In order to understand this scourge it is important to know that human trafficking “is a form of modern-day slavery in which traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to control victims for the purpose of engaging in commercial
According to the Bureau of Justice, human trafficking is becoming the nations second largest problem, following the war on drugs (“Anti Human Trafficking Initiative” 1.) Statistics on human trafficking in the United States are very scarce and there have not been many studies conducted on the issue. Of the studies done, many of the studies focus only on minors. 100,000-300,000 children are prostituted each year in the United States. In the Ohio, 1,078 people will be trafficked into the sex trade each year. Between January 2003 and June 2006, 15 human trafficking cases were identified in the Columbus and Toledo area. Human trafficking is not something that only takes place in foreign areas, which is why the Polaris project is working to fight human trafficking not only in foreign areas but also in the United States.
