HUMAN SEXUALITY ReNata Shaw APUS: Human Sexuality Assignment 2 Resubmit Dr. Foster November 29, 2015 Human Sexuality Introduction Sexuality encompasses aspects in a person’s life that involves sex and gender identity, sexual orientation and sexual behavior. It encompasses the physical, social and psychological aspects of a person’s sexual behavior. It underpins what an individual is, affects the individual’s life wholesomely and is unique to each and every individual. A general stereotype of sexuality in old people exists in the society. Most people tend to believe that sexuality diminishes with age and that old people are not supposed to be sexually active beings. It is a reality however that most old people engage in sexual activities and have sexual needs even late into their lives (Connaughton & McCabe, 2015). Beliefs on sexuality in old people have greatly influenced negatively the way old people express their sexuality. The cartoon depicts an old couple possibly in one of their routine appointments with their family doctor. The couple despite the doctor’s attempt to engage them in a conversation regarding their sexual health is reluctant to discuss it with their doctor. A reaction such as the one associated with this couple can be as a result of the negative way in which the society views sexuality in the elderly. The result of such negativity is depicted by the way the couple seems irritated by the doctor’s line of discussion.
Over the last fifty years there have been many changes to the sexual attitudes and behaviors in the United States. Going back through the early 1900’s misinformation was abundant when it came to the sexuality of the baby boomers and other older adults. Often when thoughts come to mind it is humorous to the younger generation when the notion of aging individuals engaging or enjoying sex. It is brought up in conversation disdainfully in media.
Television and film do a wonderful job of widowing parents or creating a life so intertwined with their children that is their identity. When we do witness the actions around sexuality and the aging it is almost never serious, often leaving one to think that that the elderly engaging in any sexual contact will prove perverted, dangerous or lethal (Dan Sewell). Much like advertisements for products incite us to buy them, the views of sexuality and senior citizens we see in the media carries into real life, leaving the elderly to be labeled as either asexual or are met with phrases like "dirty old man" or cougar, simply for having a desire that exists within all of us. Being of the community and seeing these perceptions does not make it easy to be open about feelings regarding the topic on any level, exacerbating any existing esteem issues that could be onset of aging (Melanie
Human sexuality is a common phrase for all, and anything, pertaining to the feelings and behaviors of sex for the human race. Sexuality has been a topic that has been discussed and studied for as far back as 1000 years B.C. and is still being studied today. As the discussion of sexuality has progressed through history, theories have been created based on research and experiments that scholars have implemented, based on their own perceptions of human behavior. Out of the many theories that pose to explain sexual behavior, Sexuality Now explained ten that are seemed to be the most overlapped, and built off of theories. Of these theories, two that were discussed in the text were the behavioral and sociological theory. These two theories cover some of the basic ideas of what could possibly influence a person’s sexuality.
Throughout the history of humans, people have been having sex. It’s obviously necessary for the continuation of humans as a species. But it definitely hasn’t been for just reproductive purposes. People have been engaging in same-gender sex for probably as long as humans have been around. However, the terms we think of today when we think of different sexual orientations didn’t get coined until the 19th and 20th centuries. And with these terms came huge stigma that still exists today. There are many different sexual orientations that people identify as (including heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, as well as many others); the orientations that do not coincide with what people viewed as normal were originally given classification as mental disorders.
Homosexuality is defined or characterized as attraction towards the same gender either male or female. It came from the Greek language, where “homo” means the same or similar, hence referring to the attraction between two beings of the same sex. Homosexuality is also referred as a clinical term. Most male homosexuals generally prefer to be called "gay men" and most homosexual women generally prefer to be called "lesbians." Homosexuality is one of the three main categories of sexual orientation, alongside bisexual and heterosexual. The longstanding consensus of the behavioral and social sciences and the health and mental health professions is that homosexuality is an example of normal and positive variation in human sexual
For the elderly, it becomes a concern as it does with losing any other motor function. Society has become increasingly more aware that the elderly is just as concerned with their sexual performance as the younger generation. Subramanyam & Pinto (2011), address that most elderly have difficultly verbalizing their sexuality because of shame. Shame formulates from what we believe is acceptable and unacceptable in society and how we will be perceived.
There are various perspective on human sexuality. As seen throughout time, human sexuality has taken several routes and has brought about a different perspective and beliefs on human sexuality. This difference is associated with the consequences man received during the Fall. The definition of authentic sexuality is viewed in several ways through a spectrum that includes theological perspective and contemporary society’s perspective. These perspective have affected one’s current perspective and beliefs that are perverted. It has veered from God’s original intention on authentic human sexuality, which is described in several books of the Bible. Since there is a difference in understanding and view on human sexuality, it has affected one’s daily life, and especially Christian professionals, who are in the psychology and counseling field.
This article “Sexuality and the Chronically Ill Older Adult: A Social Justice Issue” is published in the journal Sexuality and Disability and the authors are Verna C Pangman and Marilyn Seguire. The article provides an overview and outline on sexuality in the older adult with a chronic illness. In today’s world, according to Verna C Pangman and Marilyn Seguire, sexuality for the older adult and the elderly is a “taboo” word, and if mentioned, fear and apprehension by the older adult and society develops. The older adult, believe that when they are ill or have a chronic disease process or even disabled they are not able to have lasting relationships, be engaged in sexual activity, and the result is the older adult
Human sexuality is defined as the capability of individuals to experience their sexuality and be able to express themselves as sexual beings (Hyde & DeLameck, 2006). Our interest in this topic is because with time, there has been a change in rules that control human sexual behaviour. The status quo in our contemporary society is much different as compared to an earlier state of conditions, and the change has, as a result, brought the evolvement in human sexuality. People 's view on virginity has changed greatly with a decrease of importance in regards to its preservation. Sexuality is essential to the economic, cultural, social and political organization of society or country. Our sexuality plays a fundamental role in all our lives regardless of age, sex or race. It forms a basic part of our personality and the decisions we make in what we do. One’s sexuality also consumes much of their time through behaviour or thoughts; at times every aspect of our lives seems to revolve around our sexuality. Studying sexuality is very important since human sexuality majorly contributes to social as well as personal problems. A lingering question concerning this topic is to what extent is virginity determined by the status quo and the rules that control human behaviour?
Sexuality and older people This paper will examine the mediums portrayal of sexuality and elderly. Further, the paper will discuss on the issues surrounding sexuality and the older adults and later it will provide a number of examples of social aspects conveyed by aspects of sexual development. Sexuality applies to everyone despite of the age. Therefore, assuming the person the first option, sexuality has a number of aspects and shows diverse meaning to different people.
The expression of sexuality and sexual health in general, is perceived as one of the central components of a person’s quality of life and their well-being (Bauer, Haesler, and Fetherstonhaugh, 2016). From a young age, a person’s interest and desire in sexual expression was viewed as healthy and only continued to grow as one matured. The notion sexual expression does not exist in adults 65 years of age and older has been proven consistently throughout research as being false (Bauer et al., 2016). Living in a society where ageism is commonly present has caused the tendency of labeling older people as sexless and undesirable. Bauer et al. (2016) conducted a systematic review on different findings and examined the experiences of adults, ages 65 years and older, and whether their health-care
Culture has a great influence on one’s sexual orientation. Different cultures hold different views on what is expected based on different histories related to sexuality. In ancient Greece, married Spartan warriors would engage in sexual relations with young training soldiers to ensure the young soldier acquires strength needed for the battlefield (De block and Adraiens 574). Same-sex relations between an older married lover also known as Erastai, and the Eromenoi was a traditional ritual that Greeks followed to ensure good warriors (De block and Adraiens 574). In addition, De block and Adriaens argue that in Japanese Samurai culture every warrior was “supposed
Regardless of age, broaching the topic of sex with someone other than your partner can be highly uncomfortable. In healthcare, patients are just as uneasy bringing up the subject as the healthcare workers. People proceed with hesitance and caution, wondering whether or not it is okay to talk about sex. When it comes to the older adult population, addressing the topic of sex can seem rather taboo. Younger generations view the geriatric population as asexual, preferring to make the assumption that those who are of older age do not engage in any sort of sexual activity. However, as evidenced by Gott and Hinchliff (2003b), the attitudes and thoughts of older adults regarding the role and value of sex in their own lives, remain loosely explored. Healthcare workers need to understand the reality that sexuality perseveres throughout the lifespan and that it is an important factor that needs to be addressed when considering health and the aging process.
I think human sexuality is a valid learning experience for college age students because we are all adults and that we get to learn new things about human sexuality that we never learned about.evrytime I read on the text book or on the powerpoins from the human sexuality cours, I learn new things that I never knew. For example , I just learned what is a
Bourman and Kleinplatz (2015) wrote an article titled, Moving Towards Understanding Greater Diversity and fluidity of Sexual Expression of Older People, and stated that, “Sex is assumed to be for the young, beautiful, able-bodied, and heterosexual. Older people are often perceived and portrayed as post-sexual. Unfortunately, the result of these negative perceptions is that older people themselves often hold similar self-stereotypes” (Bourman & Kleinplatz, pg. 1). As in previously mentioned studies, stereotypes appear to remain a common thread as well as ageism does. The world sees older people as lifeless, unable to enjoy life, unable to adapt to changes, which results in older people being ignored and in a way forgotten
