Did you know that right now in the United States some people think abortion should be illegal and the choice of women to choose what to do about their own bodies and pregnancies is being considered getting taken away from them? Abortion is a medical procedure that terminates pregnancy. It is usually done during the first twelve months of pregnancy, called the first trimester. Abortion has been legal ever since 1973 after the Roe v. Wade court case. This court case overturned all state laws in the United States restricting a woman’s access to abortion procedures during the first trimester and second trimester only in emergency cases. Eighty percent of victims are under the age of thirty. Each year there are about 237, 898 victims of sexual assault. By 1967 many states had changed their abortion laws in cases of rape or incest. Many abortions are carried out for a sole medical purpose, sometimes doctors have to choose between saving the mother or the child. These medical purpose abortions are some times cases where the mother develops severe infections, heart failure or severe cases of preeclampsia, which is a condition in which the mother develops very high blood pressure which would cause her to be at risk for a stroke. Erika Levi, a gynecologist at the University of North Carolina says, “There are certain cases where ending the pregnancy is the only option, cases where it would be putting the mother’s life at risk to continue the pregnacy.” In the 1800’s abortion was illegal except for cases where the mother’s life was at stake. By 1967, many states changed their abortion laws except in extreme cases, such as where the pregnancy interferes with the mother’s mental or physical health or when the fetus has severe physical defects. Data show that women who have abortions have better mental health than some women who give birth. What about adoption some people say, but adoption rates have gone down 15,899 adoptions since 2004 when there were 22,991 adoptions to 2013 when there were only 7,092 adoptions.
