Should Abortion Be Legal Or Illegal?

Abortion should be illegal in the United States of America. Since abortion was made legal in 1973, almost 57 million babies have been murdered by abortion. At the rate of 2,900 babies aborted a day, or 1,058,500 a year, the death toll is averaging almost double the deaths caused by the “leading cause of death” in the U.S., heart disease. These are 57 million people, who could've grown up to cure cancer, or found a reliable and abundant clean source of energy. Also, women who have had abortions almost always are psychologically affected in some form or another. These affects include, but are not limited to; regret, anger, guilt, shame, sense of loneliness or isolation, anxiety and depression, and suicidal thoughts or feelings/actions. In fact,

Among all the issues that have been fought for or against in the United States, abortion may be one of the most popular issues that Americans are passionate about. Abortion is defined as the removal of the embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy. Thousands of abortions take place every single day, and yet public opinion remains at a standstill as to whether or not abortion is ethical. Everyone holds different opinions on abortion. The proponents believe that it is the women’s private right to determine the future of the baby in her body. On the other hand, the opponents think a woman does not have the right to decide whether the person that she gives birth should live or die. They believe that life begins at conception. In fact, a person’s stance on the issue is often determined by how he views the fetus: a part of the mother’s body or as a human being. I am an opponent, and I believe abortion is murder. Also, abortion should not be legal because it harms women’s health, affects intimate relationship, and women do not have the right to decide the baby’s right to live or die.

Abortion, to some it is the murder of an innocent fetus with a heartbeat. To others it is considered an option to be freed from the responsibilities of parenthood. We all have different views that can be controversial to the opinions of others. Yet, there are proven facts and cases where making abortion illegal is the best decision. Propaganda for Prolife is everywhere, but is there enough to show the world how wrong abortion is? I believe there is not, yet there are some very emotional advertisements that can change your whole perspective. Abortion should be considered illegal because it is considered murder and can have severe consequences for woman, and there are other options to chose instead of abortion.

Abortion is a debatable question that has been argued over a long period of time. The controversy of abortion has caused or may cause deaths and several violent conflicts between, should abortion be legal or illegal. Abortion is one of the most common medical procedures performed worldwide also known as elective termination of pregnancy (History,2016). Abortion is the destruction of the fetus or unborn child while the child is still in the mother’s womb. This procedure can be done almost anyone from the mother herself to back alley, most common, abortion clinics. More than 40% of all women will end a pregnancy by abortion and remains common in the US. But the questions is should abortion be legal or illegal?

Imagine a woman was raped and later became pregnant. Shouldn 't she have the right to abort the child or should she be forced to deliver? Put yourself in her shoes. Can you imagine the pain she might feel every time she looks at the child? Should she be forced to endure this? Women should be allowed to have abortions under circumstances such as these.

A common debate in the world today involves abortion, the deliberate end of human pregnancy, and whether or not it should be legalized. “Every year in the world there are an estimated 40-50 million abortions. On one side of the argument, people are not disturbed by this grotesque number, and on the other side there are people outraged and simply appalled. Although people attempt to deem abortion acceptable in society because of circumstances like the mother not being able to support the child or in instances of rape, it is still morally wrong.

Abortion is has been a hot topic, since federal law protected a woman 's right to choose an abortion in the court case Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 (“How Did Abortion Become Legal?”). Roe v. Wade was a woman named Norma McCorvey who was not married but was pregnant who wanted an abortion. The Texas law denied her request to get an abortion, so she filled a federal lawsuit to have the Texas law declared unconstitutional. She argued that it was her right to decide if she wanted to get an abortion or not. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed with her and she was allowed to get an abortion (“How Did Abortion Become Legal?”). Since 1973, pro-life activists have mentioned things that might make you think twice about getting an abortion. Pro-life supporter’s arguments against abortion often lacks the truth. Therefore, pro-life activists should use credible evidence to support their accusations.

Abortion is not only harming the unborn child, but it also can cause medical complications for the mother. These range from a higher chance of early labor for future pregnancies to having a higher risk of cancer. “The nine most common major complications which can occur at the time of an abortion are: infection, excessive bleeding, embolism, ripping or perforation of the uterus, anesthesia complications, convulsions, hemorrhage, cervical injury, and endotoxic shock” (El, Online). Abortions can actually lead to having an adequate amount of damage. When one hears the word ‘abortion’ a lot of emotions and mixed feelings come to mind. Abortion has been and always will be a topic of heated debate. Whether one is ‘pro-choice’ or ‘pro-life’ can depend on many different factors. One’s upbringing and religious views play a major role when it comes to supporting abortion or not. There are many reasons that a woman could be getting an abortion therefore people should not be quick to judge. If a woman feels like her life or the child’s life will not be suitable for survival, then she should be respected for her decision. A woman is responsible for her own body and the actions that occur to her own body. Therefore, abortion should be solely a woman’s choice.

Noonan Jr. Thomson argues that abortion is permissible in cases where the mother’s life is at stake, where the sex was consensual but had faulty contraceptives, and lastly, in cases where the mother was raped. We all start so small, yet still are so significant, and at some point someone makes a decision for us. Abortion of adoption? How does one decide on whether to keep the baby or not? Those who oppose the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act argue that it jeopardizes the health and safety of the mother. They claim that partial birth abortions are less risky than some of the other methods. It may also produce a great amount of stress on the mother because it makes it harder to receive a late term abortion without this method. Nonetheless, all of these procedures that take place for an abortion are proven health risks. They can be very harmful to the mother and cause severe pain to the fetus. Since all abortion bans presented to the courts have been arbitrary as to which procedures they prohibit, many doctors and patients have found loopholes to get around them.

Abortion is a difficult subject to talk about because we live in a culture that has a mindset of, if one does not agree with us then they must not like us. People all over the United States either feel strongly against or in favor of abortions, which makes presenting our arguments even harder. In the United States in 1848 the Women’s Rights Movement began and a little shy of 100 years later in 1920, women all across the nation were said to have finally gained their rights. A hot topic that is one of the most refuted in today’s society is abortion. One may not see abortion to be acceptable, although, does it make it right to take away that right from someone else? It has taken women a lot of fight and willpower to gain rights to their own bodies, illegalizing abortion would take that right away. Therefore, the question is, should abortion continue to be legalized?
