Should College Be For College?

Attending college or pursuing a higher education is worth it because a degree ensures a stable, well paying job and provides a better quality of life. In Document A, “Earning and Unemployment Rates Based on Educational Attainment, 2015” compiled by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, a higher educational degree, such as a Doctorate or Professional degree, corresponded to a lower unemployment rate with a higher pay, while little to no educational degree corresponded to a higher unemployment rate with a lower pay. This means people who received a college degree had a better chance of finding and retaining a well-paying job because they are typically skilled in one profession that cannot easily be replaced, such as a doctor or engineer.

College graduates tend to make more money than high school graduates. According to the Economic Policy Institute, “College graduates, on average, earned 56% more than high school grads in 2015” (Pay Gap Between…). Although, this stat might not be for everyone it is for the majority of people. Jobs tend to pay higher if the person has a college degree than if one did not. To be successful people might have to spend money to make money. If someone spends thousands for college for 4 plus years, but in return they are making 56% more money than a high school graduate in the long run it will be worth it. They will have a lot of debt and student loans to pay, but once they pay it off they will start catching up to high school graduate in profit quickly. Many jobs would rather have someone with a college degree than one with just a high school diploma. The stats prove that people tend to make more later on than someone who goes straight into the workforce.

In Life today a college education is no longer an option or privilege, but rather it is a necessity. We are raised to believe that a person needs higher education in order to succeed in life. There is a saying, “if you think education is expensive, try ignorance.” You may ask is college necessary? There are people out in the real world that have never set a foot on a college campus before and they are doing better than others that have their master’s degree. There are many views from both sides that have a good argument.

For the graduating high school senior each year there can be tough choices made about when and where to start college. Some have to decide if continuing their education even makes financial sense. There are many obstacles that a graduating senior must consider when making these decisions. Probably, the most difficult decision is where the funding for the continuing education will be coming from. For some, it does not make financial sense to even continue on with their education. Others face even more uncertain decisions about when to apply to a college and which college to attend. Once the decision to attend has been made, there are varying degrees of completion among the students who decide to attend. Student success depends on their support structure which can consist of family and friends to other outside resources. One can see that this time period, in a high school senior’s life, can be a perplexing and anxiety producing time.

Every year millions of students make the choice to attend college to further their education and obtain a degree. Many of these students have their own purpose for coming to college, most would assume they come to college to get a degree in order to get a job. Some go to college for other reasons, or a combination of reasons. One’s purpose should only be defined by the individual themselves and shouldn’t be assigned to them. This goes the same for making the decision to go to college, one should choose whether they want to attend college. When I made the choice to go to college, I had a plenty of reasons why I should go, but didn’t have many reasons to not go. The one reason I had that would have changed my decision is most likely a concern for most, the cost of attending college. I looked past that and decided to come to college, and I like many thought my purpose was to go to college just to get a degree. After the first moth of college I learned that I have multiple purposes.

The question here is, is college worth it? Many people question this especially high school students who are about to graduate. This debate is still taking place today. The common misunderstood saying is, if you have a degree you will then have a good job. But this is not the case because in today’s society there are so many people with degrees who still cannot find a job. The rate of unemployment is increasing rapidly on a yearly basis. High school students see it this way, if I can’t find a job with a degree then it’s not worth the time, and from there on they quit after high school. On the other side of the debate college education is no longer an option or a privilege, but rather it has become a necessity. The rate of students going to college is increasing every year plus the number of colleges being build is also increasing. In my believe college provides me with higher education that will help me in the future whether it’s with a job or an experience. College education means everything to me and my family because my parents left their home country and immigrated to the United States in order for me and my siblings to have a higher and better education. But even if you don’t end up in your disarered field you will be better prepared for any job field you enter into. While specaliton could potentially hurt graduates after college it can help them just as much. If graduates pick the right field to specialize in they will have no problem to find a job. And even if graduates can not find a job in their specialized field they will still have an advanced skill set as menationed above. Going to college comes with many benefits. However, you only gain them if you graduate. “The data make it clear that getting a college education is still a good idea – college graduates earn more, and are more likely to have a job in the first place – and is especially important for some Americans” (Rotherham). As Rotherham stated, data shows college is the right choice if you wish to have it easier as an adult getting a job and a higher salary than high school graduates. Although, some think college isn’t worth it because they think it’s like high school, except you have to pay for it. “You might think college is just high school continued, but it’s not. In today's society, college is not an uncommon thing to talk about. Anybody can attend college now, which is an improvement for the masses considering that a century ago only the rich and privileged could attend. We should not undermine a higher education due to the benefits it reaps for an individual and the world, however, we often do. Some are skeptical of the idea of a higher education. finances, stress, and absence of living life are their most common arguments, but many fail to realise those extra years in education will pay off in the long run. College not only improves paychecks, it improves the understanding of our world and expands our knowledge to progress forward.

As I began my research to answer the question, I noticed something that stood out to me. There are many more articles that say college is well worth it, than articles that say otherwise.
