Have you ever read a book that continued to keep you interested in what's going to happen next? You get lost in the book trying to figure out what's going to happen before reading on. This happens often in novels that have a lot of suspense like Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” or Tobias Wolff’s “Hunters In The Snow.” The fact that they both have suspense is often the only similarity people can think of. There are many similarities and differences in them both that get ignored such as similarities and differences in the plot, theme, and characters. The plots of the two stories are similar by them both sharing a hunter's point of view. Both stories had a main event happening which is someone getting murdered. Rainsford murdered two men in “The Most Dangerous Game” which was General Zaroff and Ivan while in “Hunter's In The Snow” Tub murdered one person which was Kenny. The difference in plot between “The Most Dangerous Game” and “Hunters In The Snow” is that in “The Most Dangerous Game” the plot was more engaging and intense. The way they introduced Rainsford in the story was far more interesting than how they introduced Tub in his story. Also, the plot in “The Most Dangerous Game” was more of an attention grabber as you read it. Rainsford was forced to play a game and survive for 3 days leading all the way up to the ending and within that period of time, the plot only got better and better in terms of keeping the reader satisfied. In “Hunters In The Snow” the
Though both stories have so many differences, they also share many similarities. Both stories, “The Sniper” and “The Most Dangerous Game”, have a dark, serious mood. This mood makes both stories more exciting and suspenseful. Both stories are about risks, which mean that deaths will happen in the story.
“The Most Dangerous Game” is a very good story with a lot of suspense and foreshadowing. The story plot is about an experienced hunter, Rainsford, who falls off of a yacht in the middle of the Caribbean, and finds himself on a small island. He then goes to seek shelter and finds a mansion, where he meets another hunter named Zaroff who was tired of hunting because it wasn’t challenging enough for him. To resolve his issue, he decides to hunt something different, humans. Soon after, the two begin hunting each other. After many traps set, and shots fired, the hunt is finally over, with Rainsford coming out victorious.
In both stories the theme is really obvious but they both have some similar parts of theme and they both have some parts that are different. In The Most Dangerous Game the theme is so cliche because it is Hunters Vs. The Hunted. In the beginning of the story Zaroff and Rainsford are as equals and they both are big-game hunters. In the Hunters In The Snow the theme revolves around Deception because there are three main characters in the Hunters in the Snow and they go on a hunting trip and before they can deceive anyone they would have to fool themselves before they could do so. In both stories they are already so similar because they both involve murder and hunting. In The Most Dangerous Game Zaroff was hunting people who came to Ship Trap Island and hunted them and was committing murder and in The Hunters in the Snow Tub shot Kenny and at the end of the story they took the wrong turn to the hospital and Frank and Tub let Kenny die. Frank and Tub would be suspects of Kenny’s murder.
Between the movie and story in “The Most Danger Game” there several things that are taken and some added. When they added the Lady in it made the story more interesting. It was more suspenseful because it felt she was slowing Rainsford down and you weren’t sure if they would get killed. An omission that took away from the story was that Ivan did not hold the gun to Rainsford’s heart in the beginning. So Rainsford did not know what was coming until later and it was not as suspenseful during the beginning of the story. These additions did effect the theme it made it even more known that animals feel pain and fear when hunted.
When you watch the movie High Noon, and read the story "The Most Dangerous Game" you may not see many similarities or differences when you first read, or watch. But you might start to put the puzzle pieces together when you watch a second time or begin to think about what's the same or different about them. One of the main similarities in both stories is that the main characters are outnumbered by their enemies. This is a reoccurring theme in both. In High Noon, there are four bad guys coming to town to take their revenge on Will Kane. In "The Most Dangerous Game" Rainsford is hunted by Ivan, general Zaroff, and his pack of dogs. Another similarity I spotted was when both characters needed help the most there was no one who was brave enough to help them. One of the major differences between them was they both had different settings, and move at a different pace. However this helps build the stories. Both stories have their own way of building suspense. Each of these stories take showing the theme and differences to a whole new level
“He knew his pursuer was coming; he heard the padding sound of feet on the soft earth… (Connell 32)” The Most Dangerous Game is a story full of adventures and seems to always have the reader on edge. Richard Connell’s story is filled with the theme of ‘will.’ This book is also full of plot twists and makes one mesmerized page by page wanting to know what happens to Rainsford. It also lets the reader to question what happens at the end and it allows the reader to make connections with real life, archetypes, and other literature. The Most Dangerous Game is a compelling hunt full of violence, action, and the theme of ‘will’ in the hunt of a man by a man.
In the storyline of High Noon and The Most Dangerous Game, the two protagonists learn to feel fear when fighting the antagonists. Carl Foreman wrote the film, High Noon, it is based off a marshal who is retiring, has to fight to protect his town from criminals. The Most Dangerous Game written by Richard Connell, is about two experienced hunters who hunt one another to one's death. In the film, High Noon, and the book, The Most Dangerous Game, both have they're differences between their settings and conflicts, but they also have similarities between their two main characters. Will Kane and Sanger Rainsford share similar traits that affect both storylines.
The conflicts in both stories are relatively similar. Overall, they both include death and antagonists with unfair advantages. "One almost did win, I eventually had to use the dogs" (Connell 14). This citation from The Most Dangerous Game refers to General Zaroff's hunting game. It means that whenever someone is winning his game, Zaroff cheats and uses his dogs to kill them. This is an unfair advantage because Rainsford is all on his own while Zaroff has help from both his
One of the biggest differences in these stories would be the characters and their actions. In the Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford is a well-known big game hunter. Later in the story, he is being hunted by a general named Zaroff. Rainsford gives up hope, but he doesn’t give up on trying to
In both the story and the film, they had different settings which made each of them different and unique in there own ways. " He saw no sign of a trail through the closely knit web of weeds and trees; it was easier to go along the shore, and Rainsford floundered along by the water" (Connell). As we can see in the citation, the setting in The Most Dangerous Game took place in a tropical island filled with trees and weeds. It was more easier to play the game because it was isolated and had more objects/plants to hide
Sometimes two stories with similar themes can be different types of fiction. “Hunters in the Snow” by Tobias Wolff makes the statement that when someone wants something desperately, like validation from others, they will manipulate others and lose their humanity in the process. “Hunters in the Snow” is about three hunters who are in a power struggle. They go out on a hunting trip, where the hunter on the bottom of the food chain, Tub, shoots the one at the top, Kenny, causing the power structure to flip, and the death of Kenny. “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell has a theme that states that through a person’s experiences, they will lose their humanity and morals. The story is about an experienced hunter, Rainsford, who washes ashore
As soon as Miller puts Amy at risk of injury or death, Kane rushes to her aid and is willing to sacrifice his life for hers. Kane commands Miller to set Amy free if he surrenders their long and strenuous battle. He told Miller, “‘I’ll come out–let her go!’” (Foreman). Thankfully, Amy buys Kane time to shoot Miller by squirming around while she is in Miller’s custody. Subsequently, Miller falls dead and Kane throws his badge and gun in the dirt to show that he is officially done being marshal of Hadleyville. The theme of the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” is competition. In the beginning of the story, Rainsford does not comprehend that the species that are being hunted have feelings as well as the people hunting them. Rainsford decides, “‘The world is made up of two classes–the hunters and the hunted. Luckily, you and I are hunters’” (Connell). He later comes to the conclusion that the species that is being hunted has feelings and a life in addition to the person hunting them. As the story commences, Rainsford is a hunter; however, at the end of the story, he becomes the hunted. Rainsford’s entire mentality is morphed into the correct perception of the fact that everyone and everything is worth
Both climaxes deliver anxiety to the reader through intense, exciting action. First, the climax of “Most Dangerous Game” surprises the reader. “A man, who had been hiding in the curtains of the bed, was standing there. "Rainsford!" screamed the general. "How in God's name did you get here?" "Swam," said Rainsford. "I found it quicker than walking through the jungle" (Connell 52). This climax is very exciting and unexpected because the reader assumes Rainsford’s fate when he jumps off the cliff into the ocean. Now Rainsford confronts his hunter providing a climax that leaves the reader with anxiety, prodding him or her to read on. “Contents Of A Dead Man’s Pocket” also leaves the reader with unease at the climax. As Tom reaches for the paper on the dangerous ledge, the reader reaches with him. “He couldn't quite touch it, and his knees now were pressed against the wall; he could bend them no farther” (Finney 30). Uncertainty fills the reader’s mind in a similar way to “Most Dangerous Game”. In contrast Finney’s climax comes earlier in the story, which gives more time for the resolution of the story. These stories both have breath-taking climaxes, written to produce anxiety in the reader, nudging them to read on.
They most significant difference in the film compared to the short story is how long both Rainsford and Zaroff hunt for. In the short story, The Most Dangerous Game Rainsford and Zaroff were talking about how many days there will be in the game. General Zaroff’s game is different in the film, as the story’s version was, “‘If [his] quarry eludes [him] for three whole days, [the quarry] wins the game.’” The filmmakers made the game only one day. This probably happened because they wanted to keep the film exciting and not show the boring parts. The article, “Good book, Bad Movie,” states one reason why directors change the plot of a book when making its film is not having enough time in the movie. In many films that are based off books or stories,
Rainsford, The Sniper, and the narrator from “Liberty” are all important characters in each story. Rainsford in “The Dangerous Game” is a sailor who fell off the boat and was very determined to find land. “The Sniper” was set in a civil war where the main character, Sniper had to have a good mindset and be determined to win for his people. Sniper made sacrifices to fight in this war. In “Liberty” the narrator did not want to give up her dog. The narrator’s parents must make sacrifices for their family to be safe and live a better life in America. Sniper and Rainsford used smart strategies throughout each of the stories. In “The Dangerous Game” Rainsford got an idea about what to do to trick General Zaroff by setting a trap. Connel describes Rainsford’s quick strategies. “The pit grew deeper; when it was above his shoulders, he climbed out and from some hard saplings cut stakes and sharpened them to a fine point. These stakes he pointed in the bottom of the pit with the points sticking up.” This was a trap for General
