A hero is defined as someone who in the face of danger steps up and puts others needs before theirs, expecting no reward in return. In the article “What Makes a Hero?” by Phillip Zimbardo, the author expresses that everyone has the ability to help others, whether it is a small deed like leading a guiding hand to someone who needs it, or it can be as intense as pulling someone out of a burning car. The writer attempts to emphasize the importance of doing the right thing by stating,  “Few people do evil and fewer act heroically.” (Zimbardo). In addition, heroes act not for the fame or the money, but for their own satisfaction. Another example of a hero is when Captain Sully was on the plane that had lost the engine he had to make a choice. Sully could have flown all the way back to the airport or landed in the Hudson River. Sully decided to land in the Hudson River and when he did everyone landed safely. Sully would be defined as a hero because he did risk himself to save every single person on the plane. Sully risked his life by staying on the plane and landing it safely instead of jumping out of one of the exits. Sully did not have to land in The Hudson River but he did, on his own (Sully). In the Boat Lift act one boat had called many other boats to help transport people to a safe place where they could stay. The one boat that had called all the other boats to come help is a hero. The boat that called the others is a hero because they risked their boat and their lives to help the people get to a safe place. Also The first boat was not asked to do anything and they still did the act (Boat Lift). A hero or heroism can always be defined vibrantly and always related to helpful and beneficial deeds. Throughout the history, we had known numerous historical and fictional heroes that inspired us in acting good things for the sake of others.

When we hear the word 'hero,' more than one idea comes to mind. Not only do we think of people that we look up to in our world, but we also think of heroes in the fictional world. To be a hero can mean a variety of different things. Leaders, singers, and even parents can be a hero that someone looks up too. But in the fictional world, a hero is someone who has learned from his or hers journey to come out a changed person. Some characters complete the journey, while others do not quite make it to the end. In The Odyssey, Odysseus takes more than one leap of faith on his journey to become a hero by learning from his mistakes, making personal sacrifices, and becoming a better man.

Alex Lickerman,a psychologist, gives a very detailed description of how he portrays a hero. Many people are considered heroes for minor things. A hero is not about giving money to charities or visiting people in need. Although these deeds are productive, it does not make people a hero for doing these actions. A genuine hero will risk their life or try to save a life.Heros, are not looking to be rewarded for their actions. People simply do these deeds,because they want to make a difference in helping others. They should support people in time of need. The person I chose that qualifies as a hero is Richard Nares. He has started a program to help children receive chemo, who are unable to transport themselves. Nares travels around the country for children, he hopes to give hope and he has a major support system supporting him.

According to Alex Lickerman “the willingness to make a personal sacrifice for the benefit of others” (page 1) is what makes a hero. Which means the action itself and not the hero, make him or her heroic. For example “single mothers who deny themselves vacations, clothes and even food to send their children to college” (Lickerman, page 2). These mothers are not flawless or perfect, but are considered heroic. Every mistake a hero makes, are made with the wish to help others. This proves that anyone can be heroes as long as they serve others at a cost to themselves.

“ A hero is someone who has given his or her life too something than oneself,” sayed by the mythologist, writer and lecturer, Joseph Campbell. A hero can be represented in many ways such as this one, which is why so many around the world have their own heroes. Whether they have saved lives, singers, actors, or regular day people you wouldn’t think of. Qualities of heroes are what make them how we view them in this era, such as a person’s personality or past.

Being a hero means that you don’t do things for fame or money, you do it because I feel it is the right thing to do. Many heroes rely on their gut instincts to be a hero, doing what might be hard in a tough time. For example, Miep Gies is a well known woman she was a main factor for the reason Anne Frank’s diary was published and their survival for a couple years. Otto Frank pleaded for Ms. Gies’s help, she knew that she would regret saying no so she accepted. Miep took in the Franks and did all that she could to help them through the rough times. Miep could have easily said no and taken off the burden of taking care of a family but she said yes because heroes don’t back down from challenges and they don’t waver when asked for help. Someone else who did a great cause was the 16th president of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Lincoln was one of the best presidents in US history, he was the president who finally abolished slavery not for his own sake but to upkeep the liberty and freedom present in the US. Abraham did this because he is a hero and heroes don’t ever back down from something they can change. Mr. Lincoln and Ms. Miep were both very heroic people in many different ways but what they did have in common was that they both did what they thought was righteous

One of the pros of heroes is the ability to serve as role models and mentors. The outstanding qualities of heroes include selflessness, patience, bravery, humility, kindness, and perseverance. Heroes are people who put others’ lives first before them. Also, heroes are individuals who sacrifice themselves to support others to get out of stressful situations despite the hardships they may undergo. In some cases, heroes sacrifice their lives at the expense of those whom they serve. For instance, soldiers risk their lives to defend their country from terrorism. Equally, firefighters take courage to rescue lives from massive fires. Heroes, therefore, are risk takers, brave and capable of leading others to resolve crises globally or at the personal level. It does not mean that by doing such deeds heroes don’t value their lives, but they value humanity more.

First of all, a hero must have some kind of positive influence to the society or the people around him. Often heroes lead by the personal standards, and they use themselves as examples to show and educate those people who look up at them. A hero is a leader. Someone who is willing to save others before themselves. A hero has a fire burning determination to do something that is bigger than themselves. Someone who has enough selfishness to fulfill a dead-man's dreams. A hero possesse loyalty for their people or their country. Enough physical and mental strength to save another person's life. Someone that has enough bravery to stand up to any obstacle thrown in the way of their greatness. Someone who puts a city on their back and tells themselves that every life matters, even when theirs is in danger. Anyone can be a hero but only some choose to be.

When you think of a hero, what naturally comes to mind is the classic image of Hercules doing his thirteen labors and slaying the hydra, but what if I told you there’s a lot more to what makes someone a hero than you would imagine? There are countless examples of ordinary people from all different walks of life taking a path that would lead to greatness in literature, and these are the ones that show you how in the most precarious of situations the average person could become more than normal and achieve greatness. Supposing that a person is named a hero because of their achievements is wrong, however seeing as that a person is really called as such because they took on a test so demanding that it would grant them such a title, one not many others could say they would have attempted themselves.

Several things may come to mind when considering this question. The most common thing that people think when they hear the word “hero” is someone who is brave, courageous, or risks their lives for others. This only makes up a tiny aspect of what a hero really is. A hero can be an ordinary person who just happened to do something worth remembering. Examples of this could be Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. or even Abraham Lincoln. We remember these people because of the things they did. All heroes, including these historic figures, have one thing in common: They were ordinary people with hard lives that wanted to make a change and accomplished it. They accomplished it by listening to people and trying to make their lives better. The definition of a hero is an ordinary person who experiences a major event in their life that changes them, someone who puts others before themselves, or someone who changes people’s lives for the better.
