Slavery, was an institution strongly integrated into American society. This economic system was primarily used in the Southern states of the United State on the plantation areas where tobacco, rice, corn, and eventually cotton were grown. Inspirations of freedom and liberty spread throughout the United States prior to the American Revolution. Along with thoughts of liberty came thoughts of emancipation of this system. “Even after the prolonged battle for independence, when cries for liberty rang throughout the countryside, opportunities for both emancipation and free blacks diminished.” Slavery stilled had a strong hold of the foundations of the southern economy. The “peculiar system” continued to grow rapidly, especially at the beginning of the nineteenth century, within the United States. Slavery, was an injustice to both male and female slaves however, women would endure more physical and emotional injustices than men by the means of themselves and their children. The status and importance of a slave women within the “peculiar system” changed immensely in 1808. External slave trade was prohibited in 1808, making the survival and growth of the slave population an importance to slave owners. To insure there would be a sustainable and growing slave population, slave women were expected to reproduce more frequently. “Suddenly, enslaved African American women already expected to perform harsh and exactly physical labor, became the sole legal source of slave labor.” Slave
Slaves in the colonies during the revolution were faced with no real options and little liberty. The slaves’ lot in life varied greatly between individual experiences. Those slave owners who had only a few slaves generally treated their slaves better than those with large numbers of slaves. Even if they were treated well, the slaves had little in the way of freedom. They would be required to work throughout the day at the bidding of their masters and had no recourse to whatever punishment was given at their master’s hands. The slaves also had little hope of ever obtaining freedom for themselves and their children (Pavao, n.d.).
The American Civil War is also referred to as the war between the Northern and Southern States or the Rebellion War that began in 1861. Slavery was regarded as the main cause leading to the start of the war, as a high level of discrimination against the African Americans existed upon their arrival in the United States. The African Americans were either sold and traded by the elders in their villages or plucked from their native countries for a sometimes deadly transatlantic journey to serve wealthy southern families. They were not viewed as peers but as laborers and farmers. Americans who were rich and owned large plantations took the African Americans as their slaves. They suffered as if they were not worthy of compensation including working without pay and the standard consequence was lynching. During the period, they fought for their freedom, which was not given to them until the Civil War was fought. Consequently, they aligned themselves with the white men who were also soldiers in fighting for their freedom.
Between 1800 and 1865, slaves lived in the Southern States and worked in the tobacco, wheat, rice, corn and cotton plantations. Essentially, slavery was an economic institution with far-reaching benefits to slaveholders, since the value of slave labor was considerably more than the cost of their maintenance. Demands for democratization, respect for human dignity and American Civil War presented a major turning point in the institution of slavery as farmers turned to lesser labor-intensive production methods such as the use of Eli Whitney 's Cotton Gin. This paper analyzes different ways in which institution of Slavery affected the development of American South between 1800 & 1865, and the lives of people living in the region. In doing so the paper considers economic, political, social and cultural implications of the institution.
Slavery was a central institution in American society during the late eighteenth century, and was accepted as normal and applauded as a positive thing by many white Americans. In the 1770’s, there were approximately 400,000 blacks in the Southern colonies and 50,000 in the Northern colonies. Slaves were central to the operation of the colonies, especially in the South where they were a crucial element of the labour force. They were treated as inferiors, but living alongside whites, and essential as an exploited labouring class. On one hand, people were advocating liberty from slavery, while at the same time relying on slaves to drive the economy.
Lasting six years, the American Revolution resulted in a significant amount of lives being lost, not only to war but to disease and infection as well (Schultz, 2013). Division among the colonists was felt between those loyal to the cause and the rebels, as well as, the ones that were indifferent to either (Schultz, 2013). Disruptions of daily life resulted because soldiers were away from their homes and families for extended amounts of time and women managed the households, families, and civic life (Schultz, 2013). Additionally, slaves were unsure of their futures because there were no signs of them obtaining freedom (Schultz, 2013).
Slavery was a legal system in which people of the dark color did not have the same rights as white people did, and they were treated as they were a property. It started in 1619 in Virginia where the slaves were brought in North America to do labor jobs. They would immediately become slaves as soon as they get captured, or if they were born into a slave family. Slaves were treated very badly from their owners, and they were forced to do labor jobs without getting paid, they did not have proper homes and nor did they have any rights because they were legally considered as property. George Washington, the first president of America was born into a family that also owned slaves, and once he married his wife Martha Dandrig Custis, he gained a lot more slaves. However, his views on slavery changed during the American Revolutionary War. He saw slaves fearlessly fighting in the Continental Army in 1775, and he also noticed some places that did not have slavery and the agriculture were well developed.
Escaped slaves from the South helped the north to win the Civil War by increasing the number of soldiers fighting in the war for the north and by spying on the south for the north. With the help of escaped slaves fighting the South, the north outnumbered the south in battles, which eventually led to the North’s victory in the Civil War. Escaped slaves form the south also helped the north by spying on the south and reporting to Union officials who reported the information to the Union army. The purpose of this paper is to consider how escaped slaves from the south helped the north win the civil war resulting in the abolishment of slavery.
This mission involves discovering how the Civil War was remembered during the nineteenth century. Slavery was a controversial concern during this era, especially for those that endured the pain and suffering, the victims. Examining events, such as the Three-fifths Clause, the Fugitive Slave Clause, the Civil War and the abolition of Slavery. Observing these events, it becomes clear the American Revolution was also an attempt to diminish the perspective of the north and south pertaining to the concept of equality and human rights regardless of color. Demonstrating that the American Revolution was one of the most memorable occurrences in American history, this research highlights the importance of the revolution in shaping the actions of the United States government and initializing the concept of “liberty and justice for all,” with regard to the statues of Black Americans. Therefore this paper will exhibit the profound effects on the institution of Slavery.
Slavery was an institution that caused much division between the north and south of the United States back in the 1800’s that instigated many political, economic and moral fights between northern abolitionists and southern slaveholders. The system was established on the basis of economic profits, cheap labor, and morality of “saving” Africans from their previous lifestyle. The Southern states were notorious slave-holding states, while the North contained few, but far, slave-holders. Despite the number of slaves present in the south, their impact on production effected the economy in the north. From the time of the colonial period to the early national period, hardships came about because of differing opinions and views on peoples’ rights. Slavery was a major issue for African Americans along with issues involving equality, race, and liberty. Slavery mainly arose because of the high demand for crops and goods as the world evolved. In the articles by Morgan, Breen and Innes, Holton, Levy, and Rothman the issues dealing with slavery, liberty, and equality are discussed. The main issue over the course of time dealt with the American paradox and how slavery made such an impact on society.
Slavery's mark has long since been made on America, from the start of indentured servants whom came over to escape their previous life to work in turn for a fresh start in a world that had more frontierland the people to fill it. Moving through history slavery then brought Africans over to America in hopes of a better labor source then their help. A revolution in society happened. Slavery grip on the new land transformed the Europeans sister society into something entirely new. Something entirely American.
Unquestionably, the scourge of slavery has left a dark imprint on African-American history. However, some envisage its nefarious consequences only in terms of those who survived enslavement. In the second half of chapter 3, the new colonists were looking for ways of labor, rather than working themselves. While many English colonists wanted to force native Indian labor, they were unsuccessful in doing so. Instead they looked back into another source of workers that were used by the Spaniards and Portuguese: enslaved Africans. If it was not for the enslaved to produce products for elite whites, then Jamestown would still be struggling economically and not be able to give England a big profit. By the 1700s one of every eight person was a black person from Africa.It was also seen to settlers as an investment in purchasing slaves rather than servants, because slaves were never freed. Mortality rates had begun declining in the late 1680s, planters could reasonably expect a slave to live longer than a servant’s period of indenture. The two main crops that slaves worked on in the field were tobacco and sugar.
The Revolutionary War transformed life for those in Britain’s American colonies. Amid the disorder American society changed and institutions adapted, while the American people’s values shifted. Unlike their beliefs prior to the Revolutionary War, most Americans stopped condoning slavery during and after the war, as it contradicted the principle of liberty that America was founded on. Widespread disapproval could not end slavery and its underlying racism in the U.S., for the economy had become dependent on slave labor, though it did yield more opportunities for slaves to gain their freedom. The film “Slavery and The Making Of America” covered the beginning of American slavery in the British colonies until the end of slavery in the southern states and post-civil war reconstruction. This film shows viewers remarkable stories of individual slaves, providing new perspectives on how unjust the slaves experiences were, and besides all the trouble they were facing still having to survive and shape their own lives. The British colonies in North America had an abundance of land and a scarcity of labor ended up producing money crops with the forced labor of African slaves, literally being treated as if they were machines for production.
