With religious reforms causing controversy in England came the Puritans, known for their simplicity in their way of life. They wore basic clothing and were against consumption of alcohol and sex (unless married). With the disagreements of the religious conflicts happening in England, the puritans “wanted to purify the Church of England from within.” The sole reason the idea sparked to settle a colony in America was in search of a Puritan lifestyle and the freedom to do so. On March 4, 1629 King Charles gave the Massachusetts Bay Company a charter while not knowing the true nature of what this colony was to become and for the reasons behind it. Still, the Puritans left for America in March 1630. In contrast to the type of people who immigrated to Virginia, the Massachusetts population was mostly nuclear families, meaning husband, wife, and kids. Also differing from the colonists in Virginia, the settlers in Massachusetts Bay worked together for the common good of the colony. Along with their lives and beliefs, their government and politics were religiously based as well and soon they decided upon a Congregationalism form of church government. Document B is a journal entry from a man named Charles Mackay on his experience in the North. It gives us what blacks should be able to do and what restriction the had. According to Doc B, “We shall not make a black man a slave; we shall not buy or sell him; but we shall not associate with him”. This document tells us what rights black’s should have and what restrictions they could have.

Researchers found that more than ten thousand people are in forced labor across 90 US cities. These people are forced to work in sweatshops, clean homes, work on farms, or work as prostitutes or strippers. Many of these cases are accumulated in areas with large immigrant populations, like California, New York, and Florida. Most of the victims of forced labor are “imported” from 38 different countries. China, Mexico, and Vietnam top this list of countries (Gilmore 1).

Two important slave movements were the one across the Sahara Desert and another along the East African coasts of the Indian Ocean, both of which terminated in slave markets in the Muslim world. Narrowing to the topic of slavery in the Americas and the Muslim states, it is apparent that the two regions contain mostly different opinions as to whether slaves exist for sheer labor or that slaves are humans just like you and me. English settlements along the eastern seaboard later became the thirteen colonies which would form the US. To establish a presence in North America, England relied on private trading companies, one in particular, the Virginia Company, established the country’s first permanent settlement in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. Puritans, reformers who wished to “purify” the Church of England, settled in New England but their efforts lacked success and some wanted to split from the church. Among those who desired to split from the church were William Bradford and John Winthrop who both assisted in bringing new settlers to the colonies. The Puritans’ values of hard work, thrift, and responsibility led to thriving settlements and financial success.

Part of this new act was that any ship found to be carrying slaves would be fined £100 for every discovered slave. If the captains of the slave-ships knew that a British navy ship would be heading their way, they would order the slaves to be thrown overboard in order to reduce their fines. The Royal British Navy, previously the defenders of the Atlantic slave routes, were now the thorn in the side of the slave traders. Likewise Parliament no longer promoted the slave trade but instead began to pave the way for international abolition. The smell of blood in the air grew thick. You hear the screams of the slaves with big, bloody scars all over their backs. You see the look of horror on people’s faces, and then noticed the expression on the slave owners face, an expression of pure malice. This was the treatment of the slaves back in the 1800’s. They experienced a lot of unfairness and racism for being African. These events can be compared to the racism people experience today. Racism and unfairness are issues and ongoing problems that need to be addressed because they both lead to violence. This is showing that history repeats itself and will always come back.

Human trafficking is something that has gone on for a very long time, beginning as early as the 1400s with slaves being used and traded. As stated by Jones, Hillard, and Diaz (2007), “human trafficking is both a global problem and a domestic problem” (p.108-109), meaning human trafficking affects and takes place all over the world. Overpopulation, poverty, and so forth, are examples of domestic problems; they also increasing the chances of human trafficking taking place. Immigrants are usually the ones exploited for human trafficking with promises of great pay, jobs, living, and comfort. Trafficking, unlike smuggling, is correlated with deception to ultimately achieve exploitation. Since they don’t have rights as citizens, and are technically illegally here, immigrants comply with the orders they are given (Jonas et al., 2007).

Following the defeat of the Spanish armada, England finally had the power to venture out to the Americas after hearing about a century’s worth of Spanish success in that region themselves. Single Englishmen in search of wealth began to sail to America, and did not find the gold they were searching for. It was not until the success from the crop tobacco, did anyone in Virginia prosper. This set the stage for a huge colony with an economy relying on large plantations of this new staple crop. The many who sought out the Massachusetts bay colony in New England were likely not going to strike rich on a plantation, but to either escape the English Church, or to start a new life for their family. Not only that slavery is “social and economic movement relationship in which a person is controlled through either violence or its threat, paid nothing and economically exploited”, stated The American Journal of International Law. It was a part of life that existed for a very long time. Slavery began when the first African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619. Slaves were bought and sold, and used as laborers under orders of whoever owned them. Slaves were treated as prisoners in their own skin because they couldn’t do nothing for themselves but listen to people’s commands. Slaves were forced to listen to their owner without any say so. When talking about this touchy topic slavery was about having no choices at all to what happened, slaves had no control of their lives, and slaves constantly had a fear of violence.

During the first half of the nineteenth century, the South was dominated by an elite group of White men who made their profits off the labor of Black slaves. Only 12% of southern white slaveholders owned twenty or more slaves, the amount used to distinguish between a planter and a farmer. Planters owned more than half of all the slaves and produced three-quarters of the South’s cotton, making these men very wealthy and allowing them to establish the social, political, and economic tone of the antebellum South.

Throughout the years, the guiding question was to determine whether or not slavery should be abolished. This is essential to better understand what humans are capable of doing. By deciding whether or not slavery should be abolished, the sense of right and wrong becomes more apparent. Frederick Douglass was a slave born and raised in Maryland. Although he lived a atrocious childhood, through self perseverance, he improved his life, and latter became an influential abolitionist. The ancient Greeks, the Romans Incas and Aztecs all had slaves. Earlier it was only owing of a person by a superior one but with the time slavery showed its worst face. It gave birth to colonization, racism, slave trade etc. which gave authority to treat lives of slaves worse than animals. Worst sufferers were chattel slaves because they were treated as complete properties of their owners and even their children and children’s children were automatically enslaved. Chattel slavery was made legal by European government and from 16th century onwards it was followed throughout European colonies. This slavery has one of the greatest contributions in the formation of United States.
