One social factor that led the African Americans to transition out of slavery in the late 19th century was the idea of marriage. The marriage of slaves wasn’t officially legal while most were still enslaved, but when they were freed they began to legalize their marriages. Mass wedding ceremonies after emancipation, was not an uncommon thing to see. Many African Americans in the South saw marriage as an important factor because it legitimized any children they had and they could choose a new last name that signified how they felt about their new found freedom. The transition out of slavery and the allowing of African American marriages also led to the purchases of land and homes. This allowed African Americans to feel empowered and as important as everyone else who owned land. Another aspect of marriage was a feeling of acceptance in the communities in which they lived and worked. Civil marriages were considered moral and it was important for newly freed black families to feel a sense of belonging to the communities where they were raising their children. 2. One factor that helped the United States become dominant in world power in the early 1830s, was the idea of manifest destiny. America had gained new resources, and now had a way to move their goods across the continent without having to utilize other areas that were outside of the United States. The economy of the United States flourished because of this new avenue for trade and growth. Other countries began to worry about the rise of the United States because of their huge advancement in such a short time.
