Social Constructionism Essay

The social construct of reality is the historical process by which our experiences become categories and treated as things (Roy 5). Historical process is the process itself in which an idea becomes reified over time thus becoming accepted and used normally (Roy 19). Defining the social construction of reality as a historical process is the formation of accepted categories over a period of time; in other words, the “facts” that were once just ideas, “take on a reality of their own” (Roy 19) thus being the process of how things become a reality.

There are several theories created by many thinkers of our time that believes that societal, financial, and social arrangements and/or structures as the main cause of criminal behavior. In society, depending on where you are, there are usually some unwritten norms that are expected to be followed. It can be in a business corporation, out in the streets, at home. Usually there will be two sets of norms that is expected to be followed that causes an individual to feel torn. However, the feeling of being torn is the inner battle of doing the right thing, conscience or keeping yourself alive.

Based on what is discussed in the learning materials, define and discuss at least five key presuppositions of social constructionism. How do these presuppositions apply to marriage and family therapy?

To summarize, this essay considered whether social constructionism is effective to analysis social science. Initially, social constructionism raised the crucial issue that social science is not absolutely reality, and so society and knowledge are socially constructed within social progress. Thus, social constructionism claims that biased social science should be examined and reconsidered. However, some of social constructionists’ observation involves preference and political interests. Such as some feminists are politically engaged to fights for the alleged gender equality, but they actually have a value conception that men should not dominant women within society. In order to differentiate the two terms, firstly, I am going to define social construction and secondly I will define common sense. Then we will look at the differences between the two. Social construction is defined not only a methodological approach, used by social scientists, to research social concern, but also how different social groups or individuals use language to construct a social problem. These views and discourses stems from family values, social class and their position within society. Different groups of people can use different language to construct certain social problems (Isaacs 2015). Take for instance, conservative will have a different approach to how they define a people on benefits. They can perceive them as being lazy

Social constructionism highlights that human uses a critical stance toward our taken-for-granted forms of interpreting, perceiving and comprehending the world, and that human must suspect our assumptions about what the world seems to be. The categorise and classification are not absolutely associated with real divisions. Social constructionism doubts whether the categories female and male are merely representing naturally emerging different types of human (Ernest, 1998). Social constructionism appeals to question the classification and categories because human made them basing on their culture value, experience and environment.

In this essay I will focus on what I think are the two important topics on deciding someone is deviant or not. While examining nation state legality I’m going to put emphasis on the way law changes between places such as countries and within time periods. This will then lead onto looking at how crime statistics are recorded and especially (particularly rather than especially) the dark figure of crime which links back to the ‘what other people do about it’ part of the question. Moving on to Social Construction Theory, particularly Becker’s Labelling Theory as well as other notable theorists. Key points like what it means to be labeled and it’s consequences such as deviance identity to cuffing. The media has a large role within this topic, which I will touch on through the themes of moral panics. Finally the essay will be concluded with a deduction from what I feel to be the Superior Theory.

Consequentialism therefore states that an act, which maximises goodness, is the act that must be carried out and this is how an individual must live. Unlike virtue ethics, Consequentialism will ask question such as ‘What are the consequences of a particular action’ and ‘Who will benefit the most from a particular action, and will another action be better suited’. Throughout society there are a multitude of social problems ranging from micro to macro scales. Social problems are considered something that negatively affects an individual’s state of being in a society. Unfortunately, there are a wide range of social problems that effect such a magtiude of people. Some examples of nationwide social problems: LGBT adoption rights, abortion, planned parenthood funding, transgender soldiers, death penalty, and many others.

     You should not smoke cigarettes because of three reasons: Smoking causes cancer, Smoking is an expensive habit and Smoking also can cause heart disease. Smoking is linked to cancer of the lung, mouth, larynx and esophagus. Smoking is an expensive habit with cigarette packs cost anywhere from three to four dollars a pack, it adds up to a great expense. Also smoking cigarettes can cause a higher risk to develop heart disease.

The democratic society consist of the working class, it determines how much money they gain or how much tax they will be paying for the year. So they’d wanted o chose a candidate that will benefit them. He democratic society also seemed like it wanted to be heard in this year’s election. They spent million of dollars on making ads, posters, and billboards that would interest the average middle class citizen to go out and vote. The democratic society also was aware that the republicans were going to meet this election head on because a democratic had served two terms in office, and they are very anxious to change that.

Nowadays, domestic and family violence is still considered as a severe and non-neglected social issue. It badly ruins the families. The cases of domestic violence have been dramatically increased during the past few years. Compared to 2009-2010, it is announced that the number of domestic violence occurred was double in 2013-2014 in Victoria alone. ABS also reported that the population of Australia who experienced domestic violence was about 100,000 in 2006 (St Vincent de Paul Society 2015). In most cases, the majority of domestic violence victims were women (nearly 87%) (Hill 2015). When those women were assaulted, their children may witness the violence at the same time, it could have a negative effect on their growth in the long run.

The Hawthorne Studies is one of the most well-known series of experiments of the social sciences in industrial history. The objective of the experiments were to establish how an individual is influenced not only by their own abilities, but by their working environment and the people they work with, both fellow workers and supervisors. To gain a better understanding of what the Hawthorne studies were, why they were conducted, and how they have impacted management practices, one must first understand the history behind the key contributors of this study and the location where the studies took place, the Western Electric Company. However, the studies did receive criticism, some of which was considered fairly harsh, such as from Alex Carey The Hawthorne studies were conducted by Harvard’s Business School Industrial Research Group, George Elton Mayo, and Fritz J. Roethlisberger. These two men were major contributors to what we know as the Hawthorne Effect, and their contributions to this experiment has set forth unprecedented changes in the way organizations run.

Many people wonder, what is a social problem? Social problems are all over the world and affect many people. The definition of a social problem is an aspect of society that a large number of people or community are concerned about. They depend on your values or if you believe something is good or bad. There are two kinds of social problems, objective condition and subjective concern. An objective condition is a condition within society that can be measured. Subjective concern is an aspect of society that many people are concerned about. Social problems are major events that affect a lot of people. The social problem I will cover is poverty.
