Social Media Affecting Adolescents

Almost every child has asked his or her parents for a cell phone. While there may be plenty of adequate reasons for parents to say no, there are also some reasons for parents to say yes. That child may want a cell phone so that he or she can talk to his or her friends, to get apps, or to be able to say that he or she has one, but parents can benefit from their child have a cell phone too. Parents should say yes to their child having a cell phone because it can help keep their child safe, keeps them in touch and up to date, can be the source of discipline or punishment, and they are affordable.

Social media seems to be changing how we communicate through society. Adolescents are consumed with media for an estimated 7.5-8.5 hours per day (Georgia, 2014; Giedd, 2012). Instead of interacting with each other face to face adolescents are socializing through their phones (George, 2014). The purpose of the paper was to research how social media affects the brain, sleep, and cyberbullying (Lemola, Perkinson- Gloor, Brand, Dewald- Kaufmann, & Grob, 2014; Mills, 2014; Betts & Spenser, 2017).

What is the right age to give a child a cell phone? Many parents discuss that question. The age you give a child a phone can play a major part in the child’s life. The younger you give a child a cell phone the less time they are going to have to socialize off of the device and the more time they are going to spend socializing on their phone. However there are many different views revolving around the appropriate age to have a cell phone. Children should wait to have a cell phone until they are responsible enough, need it for safety, and/or need it for work related reasons. No matter the reason there will always be conflicting views on children and cell phones.

* Cell phones create a convenience that was previously unavailable. With cell phones, you can easily reach your kids for any reason: to ask them questions, change plans, or to simply say hello.

First reason why I should have a cell phone is that it can teach the children responsibility. Kids can practice being considerate by informing the parents when they'll be home or what time they will be home they can phone a parent.They can also phone a friend about school or homework.But that's not all. Lots of my friends are getting phones and now that I am in middle school I believe I should get one.But that's not all.

Teens have many different uses for phones. In the article "Teenagers and New Technology " it says that cell phones offer teenagers "new worlds of opportunity." The article also says that new technology are essential to success in Today's world. It says that tools like texting and social media can help needs to all teenagers like defining personal identity and establishing independence. Cell phones are new and exciting avenues for teens to do what they want to do, for example flirt, boast, gossip, get news, complain, and tease. As well, cell phones today can take and share pictures, play games, listen to music, swap videos, and access the Internet

Cell phones keep kids in touch with their family whenever they need to. Especially in case of an emergency, cell phones can be a safety tool and help inform the parents.

People may argue that in case of emergency children should have a phone so their parents can contact them. Most of the time you aren't going to leave your nine year old alone. Almost all of the time they are with an adult. So therefore children shouldn’t need a phone.

Evidence shows that child predators are ascending, if a student was at school or on their way home and something bad was to happen then the student would be able to pull out their phone and contact their parents or 911. Although students seem to get easily distracted by cell phones, it is still a great safety precaution to have them. Therefore having a cell phone in school could really help the students to become in an easy contact with their parents and away from danger.

Have you ever wondered if kids under the age of ten should have a cell phone? Reasons someone might think this is because it cost six hundred dollars and more! Boys and girls age of ten shouldn’t have a phone, because a phone takes away family time. Also,kids may not do as well in school.

Imagine a world where there were no cell phones for children, so kids wouldn’t be able to call someone in case of an emergency. How will you know they’re safe? This is my debate topic; should kids have cell phones. My answer is yes. I prefer this article, considering the fact I obtain a phone myself, and kids should be able to have access to them.
