Most people in today 's society are familiar with the term "Black Lives Matter". From magazine articles, to social media websites, classrooms, boardrooms, grocery stores and the like, Black Lives Matter is an issue that in recent years has refused to be shoved into closets waiting in hiding. It is an issue that has risen in prominence accompanied by angry marginalized people who continue to seek justice and solace. It is not the same movement that happened during the 1950s and 1960s with nonviolent protests and sit-ins at restaurant counters. It is instead a movement created upon a social media platform that has taken the stage to become a household name. It is on the forefront of race related issues amongst other things. While some regard it as terrorist group of black conspirators who are out to murder all white people in cold blood, others simply believe that it racist towards white people because all lives matter, not just black ones. Like a contest, many will voice their opinion, but few will actually decide to do research. People are quick to point out negative aspects regarding the group without actually trying to understand the change they are working towards as well as the reasoning behind the organization in the first place. SnapChat is a photo messaging application (App) developed by Evan Spiegel and Robert Murphy. Both of the founders were Stanford students. The application was initially developed for a project at Stanford. This app allows the user to share photos, videos, add text/drawings, and send them to a controlled list of recipients. Users have the benefit of setting a time limit for how long the recipient can view their snaps (Ranging from 1 - 10 seconds), after which the photos/videos will be hidden from the recipient’s device and deleted from SnapChat’s servers. The smalltime college project developed into a huge social media success due to its innovative feature (Magid, 2013).

Jergenson, a social media enthusiast, shares his ideas about how people live in constant “digital dualism” (129) a term coined by the author himself, which is “the habit of viewing the online and offline as largely distinct,” (129).However, Jergenson argues that being either “online” or “offline” doesn’t really exist anymore, that people are perpetually connected even if it’s indirectly. Every day we see young people taking social media to denounce social issues. For example the “#BlackLivesMatter” movement, this movement was initiated in the internet to protest against brutality among black and colored men and women; or “The NOH8 campaign” which mission was to promote LGBT marriage, gender and human equality. On the other hand social media is constantly used for the wrong purposes, one of those purpose is to harass, and attack certain group of people or a certain person. Cyberbullying is has turn into a common word among today’s mid schoolers and high schooler. According to some research Pre-adolescents and adolescents tend to be a target to cyberbullying. Users can communicate, socialize, share emails, documents, pictures, video, audio files, events, activities, and ideas. Users can also share concerns, issues, and problems. Social media has become an important part of people’s lives, thus, allowing them to communicate with a broader social network every day regardless of where they are at. Reports indicate that the number of people using social media sites several times a day has more than doubled from 2009 to 2010 from 18 to 40 million. Today, more than 66 million Americans use social media sites.

It’s a new age of technology; use of social networking websites is increasing day by day. Every single aspect of our lives asks for technological services. Technology is getting more important day by day for humans to survive, every single person now a day’s uses social networking websites like facebook, twitter, pinterest, instagram or at least one of these websites mainly facebook. Social networking is a way to connect with people with similar tastes as oneself and to communicate with friends and family that are far away.

Deeply ingrained into the world, the concept of personality serves as the basis for all human interaction, and in this case, cyberbullying. With the explosion of social media and internet related activities, there has been a sudden increase in cyberbullying cases. Over the years, cyberbullying—which has often been linked “to harassing text messages, rumors spread online or through social media websites, and derogatory comments about someone on social media sites” (Stockdale, Coyne, Nelson, & Erickson, 2015)--has grown tremendously, accounting for nearly “42% of kids” (Laird, 2012). Despite cyberbullying being a widely-known issue that is prevalent in all levels of society, not everyone is aware of the main factor influencing cyberbullying—personality. By identifying the personalities behind the cyberbullying cases, individuals will become more successful in reducing the amount of cyberbullying cases.

Social Media can be defined as “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages and other content (as videos)” and its first known use was in 2004 (Merriam-Webster, 2014). Social Media is a staple to almost everyone’s daily lives. It’s how people connect with one another, rally together for a certain cause, share their thoughts on world news, or get up to the minute updates of a current sporting event.

Living in a century characterized and brimmed by constant technological advances, it is certain that social media has caused great impact within our society. According to different studies conducted by Edison Research, almost 80% of U.S. Americans have a social media profile (see table 1). From a worldwide perspective, 1.96 billion social media users can be estimated; given number is expected to grow to 2.5 billion users by the year 2018. A CMO survey has proven that 90% of young adults (ages 18-29) use social media, such media consumption habits are unlikely to change over time. Considering the great and far-reaching impact of social media marketing, proper regulations should be applied in order to avoid any mistake or negative comment that could have a devastating impact on a business. Having a social media policy will enable the company to regulate social media activities in order to minimize errors that can undermine the company’s reputation which can affect the profitability. Throughout this essay, I will argue the main reasons why it is highly crucial to enforce social media policies in businesses. Various examples of companies that have successfully implemented such policies will be also be mentioned throughout the paper along with companies that failed to implement such techniques; proving that implementing a social media policy is essential for every business entity.

Then people and or companies create content in which to post to their profile which displays on other peoples’ newsfeeds depending on if they are linked on through that particular social media platform. Social media is an ever-growing and changing digital media that both individuals and marketing departments of companies use.

Social media sites, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram, provide opportunities for people to connect with each other and have become exceedingly popular in recent years. However, there are increased numbers of mental health problems such as mood problems, emotional issues, and addiction in teenagers as they overuse social media. Advocates of social media may claim that social networking platforms benefit adolescents by increasing connectivity, helping people make friends, and giving young adults a sense of belonging. However, they overestimate the benefits of new technology and lack of consideration on the dangerous influence it has. In fact, social media generates addiction, causes feeling of inferiority, and promotes bullying that trigger bad moods and unhealthy emotion which endanger teenagers’ mental health.

Over the duration of time, I have noticed the great deal of power that media has influenced on how women ought to appear. The relationship between social media and its users is a high effect on people and causes many problems. We are constantly thrown images of women and men to categorize what is eye catching. It has been clear that social media has blossomed in the last few decades to only deliver us with messages. Social media is applying to us, that looking more like the Kardashians and less like ourselves is the new norm. It is constantly feeding us with a new method on what is pretty in the media and the thinner you are the more likes you get on social media accounts.

In 1997, the first social media site broke the surface of the internet world. Six Degrees allowed its users to create their own personal profile and make new friends online. The first blogger sites arose in 1999, creating an almost instant sensation. The popularity of social media exploded. Between 2000 and 2006, a handful of new social networks—MySpace, LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter—were created that enabled users to communicate and share with other people across large distances (Hendricks). With the advancement in technology, social media has allowed people to connect with others from all around the world. In today’s society, social media has almost become a necessity. It has benefited people’s everyday lives by helping spread awareness, increase business reputation, and has even pushed its way into the education department by implementing new ways to connect students and teachers. Although there are some disadvantages, the benefits of social media outweigh them in every respect.
