Sociology is a very rewarding and interesting subject to delve into and I thoroughly enjoy all that it has to offer. Sociology helps us to look objectively at our society and other society’s, as well as to better understand individual interactions between other people. When first deciding to immerse yourself into sociology, I think that there are three sociological perspectives one must be familiar with to better his or her understanding of general sociology and to allow the learning process to progress naturally and in a more fluid manner. Symbolic interactionalism, which simply put, is the use of symbols and face to face interactions specifically involving linguistic or subjective communication. Another sociological perspective that I think is incredibly vital to learn is functionalism. Functionalism; briefly put, is the relationship between different parts of society and how those aspects function. Lastly, we have conflict theory. Conflict theory is simply the competition for scarce resources and how the elite controls the weaker groups. These are the three theoretical perspectives that I believe will immensely help your understanding of sociology, as they can be related to almost every concept in this field.
Let’s start with symbolic interactionalism. Symbolic interactionalism is defined by (Henslin 2015) as “a theoretical perspective in which society is viewed as composed of symbols that people use to establish meaning, develop

Deviance and Sociological Perspectives The current paper aims to discuss deviance in accordance with Structural Functional theory and Conflict Perspective theory. It is important to note that deviance is usually understood as a specific behavior, which seriously differs from the accepted social standards and mainstream trends. The deviance is especially noticeable in communication patterns and sexual life. There seems to be no doubt that deviance is present in any state due to the specific social laws discussed by the different theories (Ritzer 83-84).
A problem that faces many college students face is college debt. This social problem is a continual problem with more students registering at colleges and universities. A social problem is defined as “any condition or behavior that has negative consequences for large numbers of people and that is generally recognized as a condition or behavior that needs to be addressed (Barkin 6).” Members of the Seton Hall University community along with other students worldwide experience this. Based on people I know, they use loans to pay for school because they can’t afford to pay for it themselves or their parents can’t afford it. Along with that, I know from personal experiences, I have two very close friends who are paying for school
In order for an individual to understand and interpret everyday life and the society in which they live, the sociological perspective can be used as a valuable tool for that understanding. According to Mills (1959; 5) the sociological imagination is simply the “quality of the mind” that aids an individual in understanding how their personal problems and experiences can be linked with the immediate external environment. The use of sociological imagination as a tool will guide an individual to think critically about the relationship between their individual problem and social issues which are viewed as driving force of the problem. This essay will discuss the how the sociological imagination can be used as an umbrella to view a personal problem
Symbolic Interactionism (1)- The theory of symbolic interactionism conveys how society is made up of symbols that create meaning, develop communication, and produce world views. At the North Hanover Mall all interactions and even moods were established because of simple symbols. The overall mood of the mall was almost the same form person to person, a look of boredom was on the faces of many whether young or old. The attitude seemed to appear in people shortly after they entered the mall, once they had observed other individual’s body language and expressions, they shifted theirs as if they were trying to fit in with the crowd. Contrastingly when an employee
Symbolic interactionism is a theoretical perspective that people use definitions, meanings, symbols, interpretations, and human interactions to compare themselves to others (Henslin, 2010, p. 15). Herbert Blumer, whom attended University of Chicago with one of the founders of the

The Sociocultural Lens is a group of theories and perspectives that are based on sociology and sociological theory. They focus on broader aspects of society and how these affect human behavior. The premise is that social workers need to understand individuals within their environmental context. C. Wright Mills asserted that most sociological theories reflect the sociological imagination, a term used to describe the relationship between an individual’s personal experiences and the wider society. Sociological models help social workers think more comprehensively and offer a more balanced approach to their work (Rogers, 2016).
Symbolic interactionism focuses on the language and symbols that help us give meaning to the experiences in life. It also studies how people discuss the meaning of social life during interactions
Growing up, my life was somewhat sheltered compared to the lives of other people my age. I was raised by both my mom and dad in a Christian household, in which I was taught morals based upon our faith. As a result of this upbringing, my parents and I made the decision to enroll me in a private Christian school in sixth grade. In this setting I was protected from the influences of the outside world. All of the language, violence, and temptations were around me, which I began to recognize as I entered my freshman year of high school. Even the walls of the highly respected establishment could not keep the real world out.
Sociology is the study of the way groups of humans interact with one another and the way social institutions such as banks, hospitals and schools act within themselves. In order to understand sociology one must first understand that different societies have different traditions and cultural norms. What is normal in Canada may not be the same for places like Europe or Japan. In different cultures they eat different foods, have different laws and preform different rituals, methods of adornment as well as having different religious beliefs. In society there will always be outliers or people who deviate from the social norm. Through these outliers sociologists are able to help in solving crimes and change the world for the better. Through these
In order to understand have theory of Sociological perspectives you must first define the three major philosophies. The first sociological perspective will be the symbolic interactionist perspective which focus on the everyday details of life. They look at how people interpret different signs and symbolic images that have a specific meaning to the originator but sometimes loses meaning to the receiver. Since words are not concrete and can sometime be manipulated to another person to justify why they thought this was the correct interpretation. The second sociological perspective I would like to address is the Functionalist perceptive which focus on how we are held together by adapting to social consensus. The majority
Herbert Blumer, the first person to use the term symbolic interactionism, once suggested three basic premises for it. He put the first one as “humans act toward a thing on the basis of the meaning they assign to the thing” , which is to say that human’s perceptions and behaviors are not directly determined by objects or phenomena in the physical
Sociology is the study of the social lives of human beings and how humans live culturally and socially develop relationships. It is crucial to understand the society that humans live in and a series of social behavior that humans undergo. The three major ways you could view sociology, Structural Functionalism, Conflict theory, and Symbolic Interaction. Not everyone will have the same sociological perspective because the different perspectives are truly based on what you believe this world runs on.
