America’s rise to world power which started in the 1800s, America began to rise by taking over Hawaii, the Spanish American War, and the Panama Canal. Hawaii started the the trend, America had finally gotten what they wanted in the1900s. Second the Spanish American war gave the USA trust from other countries that Americans would protect the civilians and gave them partial control of Cuba and the philippines. Lastly the Panama canal was the last piece to America rising to world power by opening up a giant trade route for Americans right through South America and North America. Starting in the 1800s there had been minor rebelling in Cuba where people wanted independence from the Spanish. The angry rebels began to burn their sugar cane crops which led to them being placed into concentration camps by the Spanish, thousands died. In 1897, President William McKinley began to take action by sending the U.S.S. Maine to Havana. In the night of February 15th the ship exploded, killing 260 officers. The reason of the explosion was never discovered. In order to protect the Cubans, America took action and sent a fleet of ships into Manila Bay to surprise the Spanish and destroy their fleet. In July, 17,000 American soldiers came to fight under the lead of Calixto Garcia (a Cuban General) which led to the soldiers driving the Spanish off. Theodore Roosevelt resigned his position as the assistant secretary to lead the first regiment of the U.S. cavalry, the group he led was known as the rough riders. In the battle of San Juan Hill, America captured it forcing the Spanish to retreat. The Spanish continued, starting with the surprise of Santiago harbor but America destroyed their fleet causing the Spanish to back off. the Spanish American War only lasted 4 months which gave it the nickname of “A splendid Little War:” The United States signed the Treaty Of Paris in 1898, ending the war. In 1876 a French company wanted to build the canal cutting right through panama, but disease and hazardous conditions paused the work. America got impatient and bought the canal sight from the French company in 1901 for $40 million. Although America bought the sight they still had to pay $10 million plus the rental fee of $250,000. However this was rejected by the Colombian Senate and America had to go back to stage one. by this point in time the Panamanians believed America would help them gain independence from Columbia. The Panamanians began to revolt and America sent a war ship to protect them, and stopped columbia from sending forces to Panama. Panama now had independance and America got the canal back.
