t appropriate to spank a child? One thing that really bothers me to this day is children who miss behave and don’t act appropriately in a public setting. Maybe it was because I grew up with a father and mother that were good at disciplining and teaching me right and wrong that it just bothers me too much to see a child get out of hand and have nothing done about it. One good quality about my parents when I was younger is that they spent time and focused on being my parents, rather than trying to be my best friend. I didn’t receive what I always wanted and grew to accept that. It made me appreciate things more throughout my life. I mean I may have grown up believing that I had the worst parents in the entire existence of mankind, but when I …show more content…
Many reasons why people are fearful of the spanking technique are because they believe it to be “ineffective” and dangerous. Some believe that it is only going to produce fear itself into the child’s eye, and only make the child fear his parents rather than understand that there is a reason behind the spanking. Because of this act of “harm” some would say, it is only going to produce a negative effect inside the child’s brain and he will use this new found knowledge on other children. This spanking, explained by experts, will only negatively impact children rather than producing a better outcome, and will make the child produce a violent behavior of their own later on in life. While on the other side of the argument, people believe that it if spanking is properly used and understood by the child, it will be the most effective to repent undesirable behavior in younger children (not of infants). It’s believed that if you take away privileges from the child, it will only increase their temperament and make them behave even more inappropriate than before. When children become older then spanking from the parents or family should become less frequent because the child will understand that there will be consequences for their own actions taken place. But the spanking shouldn’t be used to actually cause physical harm, because this would be come to known as actual child abuse, rather than actual method to better increase the actions of the child. All and all I believe that spanking is a proper technique in disciplining children. Although it’s a good to do so it also has to be used in an appropriate matter, otherwise it could just turn into child abuse. But I believe earth itself is becoming too soft, and soon one day everything will be dangerous. If it were possible, would you want to live
Many see spanking as a form of parental rights and that the parent has the right to raise their child the way they consider most appropriate. Those in favor of spanking, also hold there is little evidence that moderate spanking is harmful. Further, many believe that discipline problems among children have recently increased, and partially attribute the boost to the decline of both parental authority and the use of spanking.
Kids now days believe they are entitled to everything, which as a result do not know how to handle being spanked, often because it does not occur in the home. Honestly there is a fine line between spanking your child and abusing them. Parents give their kids whatever the child desires now days, which results in a spoiled rotten child. Those children do not how to work for anything. When they do something wrong they expect their parents to just simply deal with it and when the parent decides otherwise they give the parent attitude and throw a little hissy fit. As parents, adults have the right to do what they deem fit in all fifty states. Outlawing spanking will not make it any easier to
It is common knowledge that children learn from what they are taught in school and at home. What is spanking teaching our children? According to L.D. Eron “spanking models aggressive behavior as a solution to conflict and has been associated with increased aggression in preschool and school children.” (Guidance for Effective Discipline, online) The consequences of spanking does not just effect the children, but also the world around them. Expert P. Cohen says that “spanking has been associated with higher rates of physical aggression, substance abuse, increased risk of crime and violence.”(Guidance for Effective Discipline, online) Consequently, the people in today’s society who are not wanted on the streets are being taught to be this was by their own parents. Taking a look at kids who were spanked, as these kids transition into adults they are reported to have more anger. This increases the chance that they will spank their own children and put them at risk for abuse. (Guidance for Effective Discipline, online) Is spanking your child really worth it? Many parents will say “this is the only way to teach them a lesson” but look at the messages the parents are sending their children. Repeatedly spanking your child can cause aggression and turmoil. This will lead to broken child-parent relationships. According to A.M. Graziano in her article Sub-abusive Violence in Child Rearing in Middle-class
But, howcome no one ever talks about the well being of the parents as well. A hardworking mother can be deemed as a failure to her child all because she wanted to help them. The mother could have had the same punishment as a child, and since it seemed like it worked for her, she carried it on into her own personal life. A child who may not understand the extent of what they did. For example, they stole candy at night when the parents made it clear not to. The child recieves a "wooping" and suddenly feels so terrified to even wake up in the middle of the night. Parents do not always have time to, take away cell phones, put you in time out. What is more accepsible is grabing a belt. Swinging it all around to make the child pay attention. Well, if this is the case, why do so many children misbehave. Most recently, shows like dr.phil find ratings in recruiting young, children who are reckless. Audience memebers could be wondering, "If that was my chilld, all I need was a spank" Better said than done. Not everyone can really look at a situation and determine the outcome. ALTHOUGH, child displanory stuff have been said to be controversial. Spanking a child can be seen as a way of letiting the children know who is in charge. A child with autism, however, may find it harder to comprehend this. The affects of the hitting can become too overwhelming to the point where they cannot trust their caregiver. There could be risks of
Believe it or not, a representative from Kansas recently proposed a bill to the state Senate that would make it legal for educators and child caregivers to spank a child up to 10 times in a way that might result in redness or bruising. The bill sponsor says that she wants to have in place clear guidelines for the corporal punishment that is already permitted in the state.
A fine line exists between discipline and child abuse. Spanking a child can cause many emotional problems in a child's life. Parents may miss these problems because they are trying to correct the child with spanking them. Some of the emotional problems that are
It can also be a slightly traumatic experience for them if it's done too often. If a parent spanks their child to often then the more their child will fear them. Spanking can be used as a good way to make your child’s behavior better. Only in limited amounts though ,so it cant extremely harm your
Parents have the toughest job in the world trying to raise and support their children, while teaching them right from wrong. The subject of disciplining children, and which methods are most effective, is certainly one that has been around a very long time. Possibly the most controversial method is spanking: hitting a child with an open hand on their bottom or extremities to cause pain, but not injury, to correct or control the child's behavior. Spanking is one method of discipline that has no place in our society because it teaches children that hitting is acceptable, negatively affects the child's moral internalization, and is detrimental to the child's mental health.
Spanking is known to be a form of corporal punishment in the eyes of many, a form of child abuse but too many others is a form of disciplining their children that have acted or behaved badly. Spanking consist of an adult striking a child or at times another adult on the buttocks for acting up in an unacceptable behavior. In this essay, I will be focusing more about children receiving this type of disciple. Is it right or wrong? A psychologist, Dr. Barbara Greenberg said in a CNN article, “Physical punishment instills a feeling of shame, it’s a very embarrassing thing to be spanked, and shame is one of the most intolerable feelings to experience." She says that it brings depression and anxiety to the child. On another hand you have Pope Francis telling the world that it’s ok to spank your child. USA today reports that the Holiness said parents "should be able to rectify their child's inappropriate action by imposing certain
It is absolutely alright to spank your children. If you do not spank your children, they think they can do whatever they want. They have nothing to fear if you just give them empty threats and punish them for their wrong doings. Timeout becomes ineffective because after awhile they will just do what they want and not even listen to you when you tell them to go to timeout. It is not a punishment for everyday minor occasions, just for when they are acting up badly or do something extreme. I would give them a warning to stop whatever they were doing, and if they didn’t, then they would know what was coming to them. Children begin to stop fearing punishments such as soap in the mouth, timeout, and other minor threats.
Parents should not spank children regardless of their age or what they have done. Most parents I have seen do not verbally say “I spank my child” but it does occur more than what is seen. It is not an everyday occurrence for me to see a child being spanked in public. However it does occur more frequently in bathrooms or behind closed doors. I am willing to bet it happens a lot more than meets the eye. When I do see spankings in public it makes me uncomfortable. Even though it is an arrestable offence to hit a child a certain way, parents still do it.
Spanking has been a controversial topic among many parents. Some believe it is just a form of discipline and is okay, while others believe that this is abuse or violence and it will harm the child in the long run.
Spanking has become an arguably debatable form of discipline. According to a study at the University of Texas, the more children are spanked, the more likely they are to defy their parents (“Spanking: Pros and Cons”). There is a connection between spanking during the childhood and mental health diagnoses later in life. There are other options of discipling your child than spanking them, especially because all children can take spanking differently. Parents should not spank their child because it showers that being “stronger” is right, demonstrates that older people have a right to hit younger people, and gives the examples that violence solves all problems.
Growing up, did your parents or guardians ever spank you for something you did wrong? I can remember getting my behind swatted when I did something wrong. I also remember my mom would always say, "You will get into less trouble if you tell me the truth." According to Reeves and Cuddy (2014), in the year of 2012, over 70 percent of American's were in agreement that there are times when a child needs a "good, hard spanking". Of course, not everyone has the same opinion on how often or severe the punishment should be. So, should spanking your child, when they are in need of one, be banned?
The second reason why spanking should not be done to children is the fact that it is a form of child abuse. At the moment, countries are divided as to legalize corporal punishment or create a law saying it is illegal. In the book written by Abela (2007) for the Council of Europe, she notes that “spanking of children less than two years old increases the risk of severe physical injury and the child is unlikely to understand the connection between behavior and punishment.” Most parents tend to go overboard when disciplining their children, especially when they are very angry and have not subdued their anger. This then makes the child their venting medium to get rid of that anger and sometimes, they do not apologize and even forget why they have done the deed. Other parents tend to make this a habit and even if the child did nothing wrong, they would still continue spanking the child. Eventually, the parents may slowly abuse the child through pain and totally make the child’s life a complete hell. As a result, child becomes frail and suffers psychological problems. Some countries, especially social services, use this as grounds to get the child away from the family and file cases of child abuse and physical injury that can lead to jail time if proven guilty. Spanking may also cause scarring and may be with the child
