Over the years people talk about how the education system in the United States is failing and how we need to change it. There is many observations people are making of why students are not being successful and how we can create a system to change that. Media shows stereotypes about teachers and students even if they do not know the education system themselves. In the movies, that are about education there is many troops used about the students, socio economic class, ethnicity and other factors. In the movie Stand and Deliver the students challenge the school system by attending and studying for an AP Calculus test when at the beginning of the movie the students were being taught a low level course of math and the school's staff did not have hope on them. Jaime changed the stereotypes about the Latino community he was teaching and gave them hope. Escalante showed that effort pays off and that your life circumstances should not affect your life academically. That a teacher is the key of the success of the students. …show more content…
Jaime Escalante in my opinion was a good teacher because he made the students succeed, but he also was very strict and that showed the audience that students of color have to be taught i a strict environment to actually make them succeed and that your life circumstances do not matter because if you work hard you will succeed when in real life the education system is very corrupt and students of color have many barriers that this movie shows but are not emphasized a lot. Jaime also taught an English class and that was something that a good teacher make by giving a good example to the
Did you think it was projected to the viewers? The overall meaning of the film that education in America is extremely unvalued was successfully communicated to the audience through the dramatization. The film made a point of showing a realistic view of the conditions pertaining to the inner city schools in America today. It shows the audience the way that a school system deteriorates without the support of the city, parents, and the teachers. With the continuation of a failing school system, the students are the victims.
Among all of the information on the United States education system, one documentary rises to a status above most others: Waiting for Superman. Released in 2010, the documentary is still relevant, and perhaps the most well-known work on the topic of education in the States. Not only does Waiting for Superman provide information and an argument for change, but its renown is proof that Waiting for Superman uses highly effective persuasive techniques and rhetorical strategies to deliver information and to push its argument for change.
Educational systems in America are impaired, and the very educators that are meant to teach are the one’s pulling it down. That is the apparent message that Davis Guggenheim attempts to convey in his documentary “Waiting for Superman”. He uses many strategies to get his message across. Some of these include cartoons, children, and those reformers that are attempting to pull the system out of the ditch that it has found its way into. He makes his point very well, and uses facts and figures correctly. He does leave out some of the opinions of the opposing views, but it does not take away from his point that the educational system in America is in need of repair.
Moctesuma Esparza helped organize walkouts in East Los Angeles schools. He was a hardworking person and really wanted to get this done. He took a stand for all Chicano immigrant education. Moctesuma Esparza did not want the chicano students to go through the stuff he had to go through growing up and going to school. Moctesuma Esparza wanted to make a difference in the world for all Chicano students and their educations. He wanted for all Latino immigrant students to be treated fairly like all the other students in East Los Angeles schools. Moctesuma Esparza was just one person from many that helped out, and took a stand for these students. He is also very known for committing himself to help Latinos in creating opportunities for themselves, and his contributions to the movie industry.
According to him the assimilation of the people would produce influence in the white community. Such belief was not entirely accepted but still remains a significant part of his history. Regardless of that, his involvement with education is highly reminiscent because he fought for the liberty to have equal rights in such matter, it should be considered a priority at most. As a professor at the University of Texas, he continued his endeavor of obtaining opportunities for the Mexican American community. Such work had to with desegregating based on language proficiency as well as unfairness in standardized tests. He was a member of many organizations and councils that served for humanitarian prosperity and advancement of the people. As a member of LULAC, he represented their mission to advocate for the betterment in all prosperous matters, including civil rights, for all Latin American people.
Walkout was a powerful movie it showed that Latinos are more than garbage pickers and lawn mowers . I loved that movie and it was actually my 3rd time watching the movie . The movie showed the power of unity ,persistence and determination . Honestly I loved the Movie and all I can say is that , that movie made me proud to be a Latino even though i'm not mexican -American it represented all lations that were doubted and told that they can't get big time jobs
There are many Hispanic people that are remembered today and that children learn about throughout their years at school because Hispanics are also a part of American culture. The person I chose to research and caught my attention was Salvador Castro who was a social studies teacher.Castro has the trait of being a risk taker because when he would be teaching in his school he would fight for the rights to demand bilingual and learn about Mexican American history. Salvador Castro began his teaching career in Belmont High School in Los Angeles where he saw a bunch of Hispanics being discriminated him and to protect them he would fight for prejudice. Many of the Hispanics he saw weren’t able to be elected as candidates
Escalante is an interesting, dynamic character that most people seem to love. Many would characterize him as ambitious, hard working, and prideful. To most, he may come off as a stickler or rough around the edges like a blade, but he means well, overall. Mr. Escalante is a hard working man, who cares for his students a great amount. From day one he seeked the potential in his students. He knew from the get-go that their would be success in their future. He wanted them to graduate to college and flourish in life. So forth, Escalante made the decision to refuse to give up on his class. He taught them to his best efforts, pushing them forward and making them strife. All in all, he was an extremely motivated man and a well put together
Testing Our Schools was discussing the controversial topic of the newly introduced state testing that President Bush was trying to pass. President Bush was calling for higher standards in the academic world and wanted to hold schools and teachers accountable for the materials they are teaching students. This act would be known as “No Child Left Behind.” These standards where called “standards of learning” or SOLs. The documentary went to schools in Virginia to ask teacher how they felt about the standards that would be implanted in their schools. Many of the teachers seemed in favor because it gave them a guide on what to teach and how to teach the subjects. However, other teachers at schools in low income neighborhoods were opposed to the testing because students faced certain obstacles that would hinder true test score results. Many of America’s business sector was in favor of having this program in place because it made sure students were learning the information that would be needed later on in life. Although, these standardize test came with some glaring issues that made standards of learning a controversial topic among American society. Many people believed that the test were not an accurate indicator of a students true intelligence and the margin of error on these tests left many students being misclassified. The belief was, students were not actually learning the material but rather the main focus was to teach these students how to pass a test. These test sometimes
One fact that proves my point is shown when they were filming in baseline academy and the teachers and the principal were fighting to give a good education for the kids in elementary. In the film they were saying “Education is something everyone should have…”. This is important because people
The movie “Stand and Deliver” is about a school called Garfield High School, Los Angeles California in the 1980’s which is based off a true story. In the movie “Stand and Deliver” Mr. Esclante who used to work at a computer company and quits to becomes a computer teacher since he wants to teach. But the school didn’t have the budget to buy computers he teaches math. The students’ knowledge are below standards where their knowledge is lower than 7th graders but they are high schoolers. He wants to get their knowledge to high school standards and he also wants to teach them calculus.
The story of Jaime Escalante, who is a high school teacher proves the benefits of education to all. He manages to inspire prone dropout students to study calculus and pass, making many to doubt leading to his student rewriting the exam. The movie as per its
At a meeting of teachers, Escalante learns that the school faced closure due to low numbers at the time of final exams, and reports that he is ready to help in solving this problem. With tremendous efforts, Jaime Escalante provides truly incredible and selfless work, trying to get his students, who are mostly Hispanic, out of the swamp, in which they were pulled by surrounding criminal and hopeless environment that includes drug
School of Rock is a classic movie (in the millennials’ generation) that almost no one can turn his/her head from. This movie gives off a friendly, outgoing, real perception of what a male teacher would present to a classroom. He makes the kids laugh, helps them learn, and gives off a masculine vibe that his students respect. Stand and Deliver is another movie showing how a male figure can make a junky, unorganized, failing classroom into a successful, vibrant, encouraging place to be. In most movies about education there will be the failing classroom with the not-so-great teacher.
This paper will be explaining the different types of leadership skill that I notice in the movie Stand and Deliver. The movie is a true story about a teacher who fought against all odd to help poor Latin students to pass the advance placement test in calculus. He motivates the students with everything that he could think of. The students received such a high test score that the testing center though they had cheated.
