I sought to complete my undergraduate studies at The University of Texas at Dallas as they offered a highly prestigious “case study method” based program along with numerous opportunities for campus involvement through student organizations. In 2012, I was awarded the UT Dallas Diversity Retention Scholarship based on the winning essay I wrote for the “Yes, You Can Reach Your College Dream Scholarship”. I also received the UT Dallas Academic Excellence Scholarship based on my GPA. My introduction to the world of personal financial planning began in the summer of 2012 when I enrolled in a Personal Financial Management course at The University of Texas at Dallas. Prior to this course, personal finance was a topic that I had always taken a deep-rooted …show more content…
I chose this course simply in the hopes that it would aid me in securing that foundation of knowledge and that any application of the material would result in self-betterment. At the closing of my first lecture, I was enamored with my professor Jared Pickens’ witty and exuberant demeanor. He had an undeniable passion for educating others that had cultivated through-out his years as a Financial Counselor to his current role as Senior Lecturer. Although the course had originally been designed to help students develop a sense of their own personal finances, Professor Pickens offered additional insight into the career of financial planning based on his own experiences within the field. To demonstrate our understanding of the financial planning concepts and methods, we were assigned a semester-long project in which we were to dissect an elaborate case-study and present our conclusions in a formal presentation. My partner and I wasted no time on outlining our assignment, as we were both genuinely excited about unveiling the financial complexities of our new “clients”. We spent countless evenings in the school library analyzing the data while pouring over textbooks, websites, and research to develop the perfect recommendations. In an added measure of creativity and fun, we fashioned our own faux …show more content…
I was taking so many notes that my hands were beginning to cramp but the wisdom that I was absorbing was so profound that I had no room for complaints. I was assigned an undergraduate research project, in my internship course, where I was to select an area of interest pertaining to my internship and create a poster of my research that I would formally present to my professor Dr. Kaplan. Out of personal interest, I chose the topic of researching the investment management process at Quest Capital Management. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of interviewing Jerrod Dawson, the Director of Investment Research, and Dennis Moore, my internship mentor and Chief Operating Office at Quest. My research outlined financial analysis, formalization of the investment policy statement, portfolio strategy selection, investment manager selection, performance measures, and portfolio monitoring and reporting incorporated in the Quest financial planning process. That fall I had also recently been accepted into the Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity and was eager to share this research experience with my sisters during our weekly “lunch and learn” where we would engage
I came from the public schools district in Philadelphia, where they didn’t have enough money for books and computers to prepare student for the competitive world. That made me realize there is more to this world than Philadelphia. I know there are more opportunities for minorities. When I reach my dream goal in life I will return to my city to give back. Many college graduates want an education, to support them after graduation. They want to enjoy the profession they have chosen. This scholarship will impact my perception on organizations that help young minorities grow to their full potential. Understanding that organizations does seek out students that work hard and want it for themselves, is something that inspires me to want to do the same. I want students to know that as long as you work hard in school, get excellent grades, and want more in life for yourself, that you can achieve any goal that they
The concepts throughout this book are simple but they test self-control and patience, which in our world is uncommon because of the “want it now” attitude. Ramsey talks about how “personal finance is 80 percent behavior and only 20 percent head knowledge” (ix). This main idea is something Ramsey talks about and references throughout the whole book. Another main idea or as Ramsey calls it a “motto” that’s on each page at the bottom is “If you live like no one else, later you can live like no one else” (5). This is the theme that he refers back to on
In addition to my experience in advising and student affairs, I have also worked as a professional in financial aid for the past eight years. During my time in financial aid I have seen first-hand the challenges students face with the cost of obtaining a higher education degree. My role in financial aid has evolved over my career while exploring the theoretical
Washburn University has always been proud of having diversity since it first opened its doors to the public 151 years ago. If you are to look around campus many are able to see how much diversity is valued by the campus as a whole, they know everyone is different and each person has their own story to tell. If a university made it where no one is allowed to talk about where they came before and how they ended up where they are in life. what is the point of being proud of who you are? For me, it is important for each person to be proud of the person who they are because they could have had to overcome so much in life to make it to this point of being an undergraduate.
When I was accepted into the Rappahannock Scholars program in the school year of 2013-2014, I began to think differently and transitioned into a mature young adult. Before entering the program, I had considered the academic qualifications to get into college to be the most important. This program, and the advisor, taught me that colleges look for more than just academic interests. They are also interested in work experiences, leadership opportunities, club memberships, and honors and awards.
Keeping in line with Marietta College’s statement on Diversity and Inclusion, it is important to map out a plan to make sure we are living up to the mission of the college. In order to fulfill this mission, it is necessary to have students from diverse backgrounds represented on campus. However, having students on campus is only one aspect of D&I work. Understanding the make-up of the college and the surrounding city, it is necessary to ensure these students have the support to be retained through graduation. In this effort, I propose the creation of a three part program that will assist in this effort. This plan will involve
As upcoming high school seniors, many such as myself, desire scholarships in order to alleviate the financial burden that attending a university can bring. Though this considerable and generous scholarship prize money will be used to further my education at Texas A&M University, my main wish is to bring pride and satisfaction to my family. As a first generation student, I am humbled by the opportunity of obtaining an education in America. Since my parents were migrants from Vietnam and Hong Kong, a successful life here was unheard of many years before. Financial strains do occasionally plague our lives, however, we have not forgotten the strenuous hard work and sacrifice that my parents have conquered in order to put their two daughters through
The Diversity Achievement Program is a 2 part program sponsored by the office of Diversity & Inclusion designed to provide support for students from underrepresented populations. This program recognizes the challenges of attending Marietta College, a Predominantly White Institution located in Washington County, Ohio. This program prepares students to confront a variety of challenges they may face while on campus and in the community. The primary goal is to ensure each student is successful academically, personally, socially, and professionally. To achieve this mission, the transition program, mentoring program, and tutoring programs have been created.

Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville is a school that supports diversity. I would recommend partnering with them.
Large portions of the minority youth in the Midwest grow up in low-income communities where risk factors reduce their chances to attend college and excel academically. Project IMPACT is a multicultural academic program created by former Associate Provost of Diversity, Dr. Myra Gordon, to help minority recruitment and retention. Over 4,000 minority students have participated in special campus visits during high school, and a lot of them have decided to attend the university. Each academic school year, the Office of Diversity at Kansas State University hosts “College for a Day”, sponsored by Cargill and ConocoPhillips. There are about 700 students that are influenced by our ten “College for a Day” events throughout an academic school year. The

Southeast Missouri State University currently has 12 residence halls, two of which are currently community style the rest are suite style. The university currently is a home to over twenty-eight hundred students during the fall and spring semesters. Dr. Carlos Vargas-Aburto soon to be inducted on May 5th of 2016 has taken his position head on so far really promoting the diversity that is on the campus. A problem that the university is currently facing is diversity opportunities in the residence halls. The problem being that although the university promotes its diversity, it is not shown in the residence halls. Students are being forced to live with other students that are classified at their birth genders, meaning that only males can live with
