Born in a civil engineer family, being a civil engineer seems to be something deem to do for me. Starting from a little child, I went to construction sites with my mother, played with piled up framing plans and detailed drawings, and summed up the construction costs by a calculator. Every time I passed my high school with my mother, she pointed to a tall building and introduced to me, proudly, “Look, this is built by me, but I bet never notice the color of that brick is wrong.”. When I looked up, trying to figure out the wrong brick among sophisticated pattern but failed, I started to think that being a civil engineer is really a cool thing.

As the world is moving towards more advancement, many constructions are planned and constructed day to day. Any structural construction simply stands on the soil. So, Geotechnical Engineering has much more to do with every construction being planned. Engineers need to make sure that skills and attitudes listed above are part of their work. For example, according to the report, costly researches on bridge condition are undertaken whenever necessary but sometimes their result are overlooked and never given their due consideration. Unfortunately, the report failed to show clearly attitudes engineers need to develop in order to make their work successful and avoid failures.

The profession of civil engineering dates back to ancient Egyptian times, and at that time, the words civil engineer and architect were used interchangeably, meaning that the words meant the same and were used the same. Obviously, in today’s world, those two jobs are totally different from each other. The earliest practice of civil engineering or architecture was during ancient Egypt, building simple shelters. To some, civil engineering is considered to be the first main discipline of engineering. During the 18th-20th century, many new advances in engineering in general lead to many advancements in civil engineering. This includes the first college to offer civil engineering training which was Norwich University. Norwich was the first of many colleges to give a degree in civil engineering and after this, the number of colleges who offered this degree increased tremendously over the next few years.
