This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki takes place during the summertime at Awgo Beach. The story follows Rose Wallace and her friend Windy, two girls going into their teens , throughout their summer in Awgo. They have been going to Awgo for as long as they can remember. However, this summer they face many new experiences and hardships. Rose’s parent are always fighting with one another and she has to learn how to cope with it. Additionally, there are many relationship issues with the older teens in Awgo and it touches on many topics including pregnancy and relationship issues. We see how Rose and Windy react to these topics and really see their growth and development. Overall, this book did surprise me. The direction the book went in discussing topics like pregnancy and family issues. I wasn’t expecting much, but it was definitely different to what I thought the book was going to be about. He used different panel sizes and images to emphasize parts of the story. He put detail into main characters and scenes he really wanted us to focus on, and less details into other imagery. One of the the panels that grabbed my attention was when there was the major conflict, we see our antagonist have large panels meaning she was the main focus in the scene. Additionally her text is a lot bigger and contains profanity highlighting the tension and anger in the scene. Our antagonist is drawn with a lot of detail and we can see how angered she is in this conflict. Overall, they style of drawing in the graphic novel was very appealing into the eye and I liked how the artist used purple hues instead of just black and white because I felt it gave a sense of calmness and a summertime feel.
