the physical and mental well-being. Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, took place during the Great Depression and expressed how people lived during that time. During the Depression the country revolved around money and the lack of money, which made it hard for people to live a normal and have a health structure. In the novel, there are issues presented by the South in the 1930s that can be related to today’s society. During this time and now, some families lack the necessary income needed for the basic necessities a child requires. Children living in poverty are at a risk of developing mental, social and physical health conditions. Being successful and being able to achieve their greatest potential is a factor to being unhealthy. The novel shows how poverty affects a person in every way.

The journal article begins by introducing an African American couple who resided in Russellville, Kentucky. James Wright held an occupation as a corn cutter while his wife Gladys worked as a cook in a white home. The time span of their journey occurred at the beginning of the great depression all the way through World War II. Seeking better employment opportunities, James traveled to Louisville. Although, his first couple trips were in vain. His resilience and determination eventually lead to a job working for International Harvester. During an era of many trials and tribulations, James found a way to support himself and his family by migrating from a rural to an urban area. The document begins with a recount of how life was during the Great Depression by Morey Skaret. By the time he began high school, the whole town was well into the Great Depression. (America Firsthand 187) He graduated with his diploma and later became a bum to help relieve the load on the home place. (America Firsthand 187) Morey and his good friend, Charlie Shellfisher, left Seattle in the spring and returned before the winter. Charlie and Morey usually rode freight trains and when a gondola car was empty of grain or coal, they would get shelter from the wind inside. If they couldn’t get inside a freight car, they would then catch a passenger train and “ride the blinds”. He promptly had asked them how much money they had on them and when they answered that they did not have any he took them under arrest. They later had figured out that when someone in town needed workers, the railway security officers would provide the. They spent four days carrying books from one side of the street to the other. They spent three nights in jail, where their meals would arrive in a bucket. (America Firsthand 188) They then skipped to the next town over where Charlie became sick. Yes, the stock market crash was a main reason of the Depression, but it actually began long before that, with the Roaring 20’s. With such a large disparity between the rich and the poor, the overproduction of goods (too much too quickly), and people racing to buy stocks, it was only fitting that it would soon come to an end.      The Great Depression was a huge economic downfall in North America and involved many other industrialized countries of the world. The Depression began in 1929 and lasted for about ten years. Millions of people lost their jobs along with many businesses going bankrupt. The common misconception of the Great Depression is people think that the stock market crash was the main cause for it. There were many causes for the Depression; unequal distribution of money during the 1920’s was the main cause of the Depression. The Great Depression was a terrible time for people in the United States. With the stock market crash, there were many people without jobs, homes, or they didn’t have anything. Many Americans were left with nothing more than the clothes on their back and their family. Many banks and businesses had to close because on the stock market crash. Even though these times in the thirties seemed to be hard for most people, the American people did not just sit around and do nothing. Many new fads and activities were made up in this time and many of these fads are around today. The times were hard, but not everything was bad for the American people and, in the end, everything would be better than it was before the Great Depression happened. The Great Depression was a time of disappointment and poverty for several. It became an unforgettable historical time in American history. The Great Depression happened from about 1929 to 1941. Throughout the course of American history, many events arose which have transpired variations in the lifestyles of American citizens, and everyday life. The Great Depression was the longest and most widespread economic depression in world history. Some may argue that wars or the issue of slavery were worse, I disagree. While wars only affect groups of people or a few countries, and slavery mostly affected the black people and their supporters, the Depression affected everyone, no matter the race and spread worldwide. Human matters depend on differences and affect the lives of the people on the opposing sides. However, economic matters can control the lives of all. The economic slump that lasted 10 years shaped the nation and changed the lives of many forever. Many things happened that caused or were caused by the Great Depression, such as starvation, stock market crashes, and poverty.

For my personal essay I am going to talk about depression. Depression is an extremely complex disease, there are many people who live with depression. Depression can be brought out or caused by many things like:Abuse, certain medications, conflict, death or loss, genetics, major events, serious illnesses, and substance abuse. There’s people that don’t even realize that are depressed. Like me I never knew anything about depression I didn’t know what were the symptoms or how do I get rid of it.
