5th period Do you think that a wish can make you lose someone you love dearly? In the “Monkey’s Paw” by W.W Jacobs a family is torn apart when a cursed paw is given to Mr. White is the most responsible for Herbert’s death, will be seen through several examples from the text. I remember when my family got a phone call saying that my first cousin had just died. The whole family was devastated when we all got together. By using the paw Mr. White family was devastated as well. I am sure his family wish Mr. White didn’t have the “Monkey’s Paw.” My family can relate because we all wished he would of went home instead of going to Jackson. Throughout this story I am going to be writing about who’s responsible for Herbert’s death. The person who’s responsible for Herbert’s death is Mr. white as you notice in the first paragraph. The reason being that its Mr. White fault is because he didn’t need anything but he still wished for 200 pounds. He should’ve wished for anything because he has everything he could possibly want and need. Even though Herbert wanted him to make the wish he still should’ve made it if he was warned about the paw. …show more content…
White’s fault for Herbert’s death. It says on (page 36) “I wish for 200 pounds” said the old man distinctly. This shows that Mr. White is the one that made the wish so he’s responsible. This also shows that Mr. white is crazy for making the wish because he said he had everything he
Did you ever wonder why Herbert dead? It all started on a dark stormy night while playing chest a man from a war away land, knocked paw would let you make three wishes. In the story, “Monkey Paws” the son Herbert dies. I believe Mr. White said he has everything he won’t. He should have never wished for everything.
Immortality has been made into this ultimate goal. Literature and films have often painted immortality as a gift only given to the few who have proven themselves worthy of it. A life full of great wisdom, experience, and many other joys. In Journey to the West, it opens up with the birth of Monkey and follows him as he tries to achieve immortality. Monkey wants immortality and is willing to do anything to get it; thinking immortality will bring him a an enlightened life. After reading Journey to the West, I believe immortality should not be something that is prized as the ultimate gift. I think living an immortal life would be far worse than a mortal one and throughout this paper I will discuss why.
Although regretting wishing another wish, Mr. White wishes Herbert, his son, to be alive again. Unfortunately, Mr. White realizes that Herbert will return in his mutilated form, so he quickly wishes for Herbert to return to the grave before his wife is traumatized. As Mr. White and his wife look out at an empty street, awaiting Herbert’s arrival, they are heartbroken knowing that they will probably never see Herbert again. Unlike Mr. White’s first wish, Mr. Peters wishes for a wife as beautiful as the forest. However, Mr. Peters apprehends that Leita, his wife, will never be satisfied being a human, because she longs to be with her swan sister. So, for his second wish, he wishes her back to swan form. Now, without Leita Mr. Peters, as well as Mr. White, is heartbroken and a lonely man, once again. Now, understanding that wishes only lead to misfortune, he decides not to use the third wish.
In the monkeys paw, there's a home that house's three people, the mother, the father, the son and the sergeant(the friend). One of the fathers old friend's comes to visit and tell stories of his journey. He talks about the pyramids, interesting people, different states and many other things over some drinks. The sergeant started telling a story about something called the monkey's paw, which is what really peaked the father's interest. The sergeant said it would grant you three wishes, but at a price. After the he finished his story the father asked to have it as a memento. The father's friend knew there was no way he would drop it so the sergeant gave him the paw, but before letting go he told him there were consequences if he used it. It was getting late and the sergeant had to leave. After he left the son went to bed so he would be ready for work in the morning, but the father and mother stayed up talking about the paw. A hour pasted and the father wished for money not thinking about what bad may happen. "I wish for two hundred pounds," said the old man distinctly. (part 1, W.W. Jacobs). The next morning the son went to work at the saw mill like an ordinary day. the parents laying in there yard reading a knitting were talking about how it didn't work and it was a tall tale when out of the blue, the father and mother received a visit from a stranger that works with there son at the mill. The stranger told the parents there was an accident at the mill. Both the father and mother dropped there things and asked what happened and if there son was okay. He hesitated, but finally got the courage to say the news. 'Your son had a accident working and passed away.” said the stranger. The mother started crying. The stranger handed them a bag of money. The stranger said he got donations from all the workers to help with the funeral. Then it dawned on the father what had happened. He had killed his
At first Mrs. White is very skeptical of the power the paw is said to possess. Even while Mr. White is fully captured by the paw’s mysteries, he is still uncertain of what to wish for. His son suggested asking for two hundred pounds, “ ‘If you only clear the house, you’d be quite happy, wouldn’t you!’ said Herbert, … ‘Well wish for two hundred pounds…’ ”(3). Although it is true, that after the wish there is no immediate sign of it coming true, a man pays Mr. and Mrs. White a visit the next day to inform them of their sons death. They do not correlate the two events until they receive the compensation of two hundred pounds, for their sons tragic leaving. That is the precise moment that they finally realize the paw’s evil “curse”. Furthermore, in the concluding part of the story, Mrs. White begs her husband to “ wish [their] boy alive again” (6). This illustrates irony because the family has just seen evidence that wishing on the monkey's paw is a horrendous idea and only brings detrimental consequences. It is even specifically mentioned, in the beginning of the story, that Mrs.White did not even want to ever make a wish. By wishing Herbert (their son) back from the dead, she is doing the exact opposite of what she was expected to do, thereby creating an ironic event. Overall, Jacobs uses the characters actions as a way to depict the monkey's paw true
Life Lessons in “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs and “The Third Wish” by Joan Aiken
There are many reasons that shows Herbert was responsible for his death. For example on page 36, Herbert stated “If only you cleared the house you might be happy. This shows that Herbert could have cause this upon himself, because if Mr.White would have made a wish for the house to be more clear or clean , this could have
This paragraph is about “The Third Wish” by Joan aiken. The main characters are Mr. Peters and Lita the swan/wife.
The merchant the man's name.He said " It's Martin Jones ". Martin had a scruff beard and a heavy head head of hair. The merchant asked what did martin want. Martin said " you know what I want dammit the dam monkey's paw." "I don't have the paw" the merchant said nervously. Martin screamed at the man telling him I will kill you and pulls out a gun aims at the man's head and tells him again "Where is the monkey's paw you or you're a dead man. "Here" the merchant said handing the monkey's paw. His hand shaking. It is cursed the merchant said. Martin didn't care what the merchant said and ran out of the shop and hid in a nearby alley. He threw away the gun ran towards the airport to go back home in rural
The short story the,” The Monkey’s Paw”, by W.W.Jacobs desires a family that doesn't know what there really wishing for. At first, Mr.White and his son were playing chess before Sergeant-Major Morris came to visit them. When there were talking Sergeant major Morris brought up the monkey's paw and told them that it could Grant 3 wishes. Mr. white found it interesting but said he didn't need it his wife and son convinced him to wish for 200 lb to pay off his house Because it couldn't hurt anyone. when they wish the money did not appear right away and sergeant major Morris already went on his way. Herbert Jokingly said that maybe it would appear on his bed. the next day the money has still not appeared and Herbert joked around and told his
The moral learned in the Monkey's Paw is be careful on what you wish for. The Whites didn't think of the consequences of what would happen or why Morris seem afraid of it and why he was determined to destroy it. Mr. White didn’t listen to the warnings and Mrs. White and Herbert thought it was a foolish idea and did not belive in it. So they wished on 200 pounds and the paw started to move and it scared Mr. White as they shrugged it off Herbert saw the monkey’s face in the fire staring at him he was frighten and quickly tried to extinguish it. The next day there was a strange man in front of the house and Mrs. White wasn’t sure if she should open the door soon the man was on their door step. He told them the devastating news about their son death and the company felt sorry as well and would like to give them 200 pounds for their loss.
The second wish is Mr. White and Mrs. White wish for their dead son Herbert to come back to life. the wife insisted that Mr. White had wished that they could see her dead son Herbert. Then the whites heard Herbert knocking on the door then Mrs. White ran to the door but she couldn't reach the bolt.
Nothing comes easy to people, because working for something is better than wishing for something. In The Monkey’s Paw it just so happens to be that, The White family( Mr. White Mrs. White and Herbert White) gets a talisman from an old friend Sgt. Major Morris. He warns the family about the wishes that the monkey’s paw grants and to be careful what you wish for. The White family overlooks the warning and wishes for something that will comeback to be bad for them. This act of characterization shows that Circumstances influence human behavior.
Have you ever heard the saying watch what you wish for? In the 1902 short story Monkey’s Paw by W. W. Jacobs, this exact saying comes to life. Through the magically cursed monkey’s paw fate becomes the ultimate ruler in this tragedy. This realization comes to light when Sergeant Morris says “But I warn you of the consequences”.(Jacobs, 1902). W. W. Jacobs uses this dark and eerie short story to remind readers to be careful what they wish for because it may just come true. W.W. Jacobs uses many literary elements such as theme, plot, symbolism, setting, and point of view to catch the eye of readers and suck them into the horror story of the Monkey’s Paw.
First of all, there was the story, “The Monkey’s Paw,” by W.W. Jacobs. The Whites were the perfect family, a father, mother, and son. The did not have much, but they were content with their lives. They accepted the reality they were in. That did not last. One day they received a gift from a friend, the Sergeant-Major, that could bend reality. Or at least, it seemed to. The gift was a paw, said to grant three wishes. As stated in the story, “It had a spell put on it by an old
